Description: The intimacy of a small room with just six tables with views of the kitchen, you will enjoy a dining experience in an exclusive atmosphere. Don Giovanni bases its origins on over 25 years of experience in the restaurant business Italian and international Chef Pier Luigi Di Diego and the daily and careful research of raw materials of the season and first quality. Our garden of 1.2 hectare, diversified from May to October, is located at Marrara near the former headquarters of the restaurant and allow us to use fresh raw materials that are processed in the kitchen with great respect for tradition, without excluding modern techniques cooking and processing of food, paying close attention to nutritional aspects. Every day by our pastry, fresh bread is prepared with different qualities of flour. Our wine cellar, made in the former bank vault that was here before the seat, offers a careful selection of wines with more than 600 national and international labels. Our philosophy of life, prompted us to choose most of the wines produced from sustainable agriculture (organic, biodynamic, etc.). The opportunity of a proposal for a tasting by the glass in combination with the food is the opportunity to taste wines that respect the originality of the terroir, ie the taste of a particular place. To advise in the room Laura Gentleman, wife of the chef, their synergy, dining and kitchen, take you to your gastronomic journey as an indispensable ingredient of a recipe meditated.

“Fabulous”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 August 2014

We do not have Michelin star restaurants in New Zealand, I guess they don't know where we are. We do, however have some wonderful restaurants and wine makers.
So we were determined to try one to see what the hype was about. We were not disappointed. Il Don Giovani was one of the best dining experiences we have had - anywhere. It is intimate and delightful. Marcos partner in the kitchen also came out to greet us which was a nice touch.
Marco attended to us throughout the night with a warm, friendly manner. Apparently this is his style even when there is a full house. His knowledge of wine was encyclopedic. We challeneged him to show us white wines that would impress us. We weren't overly fussed about many Italian whites. He rose to the challenge. We learnt things about wine and, and were served wine we had never heard of. Including a very rare Mandurian red that he has the only stock of. The food was superb, as one would expect. It was relatively expensive, but one must pay to experience this level of service. The portions were perfectly adequate for us, savouring such wonderful food slowly does tend to make you satisfied without huge helpings.
We highly recommend a splurge at Il Don Giovani.

“Inventive and tasty food, interesting wines, small portions, high prices”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 August 2014

This restaurant is a bit too exclusive for an average food and wine lover. It has only six tables, service is personal and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. Portions, however, are small and prices are inversely high.

“Delicious Lunch”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 July 2014

We ate in the cantina and were very happy. My daughter's plain looking pasta with garlic sauce was the best meal of all! The lima bean truffle pasta was also amazing. I would never have though of this combination but WOW. The chicken was fine. The salad was unusual - it included edible flowers and was pretty tasty. Very pleasant staff.

“Another disappointing one-star restaurant”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 June 2014

Il Don Giovanni was a disappointing one-star. It was a fairly small restaurant, its entrance inside another building. We were the only diners at first, and a few people drifted in later -- surprising for a Saturday night.

Our amuse bouche was a little fish with a tiny orange juice. We ordered a ravioli and roughly cut pasta, then lamb sirloin, perfectly done but no sauce or anything, and mallard breast which was very good. A modest bottle of wine. No decaffeinato, so I had espresso along with my husband, with a few little pastries.

The owner told us he had spent some time working in the Napa Valley. Perhaps he should have spent time at the CIA (Culinary Institute of America, not the spooks) instead! Nothing except the lamb was bad, but nothing was special -- for $209/about 149 Euros. This was our second dinner at a one-star Michelin restaurant on this trip and the second disappointment.
