Just spent three days in Formia. I spent every summer there as child as my dad originates from the town but now that I can go as an adult it is brilliant to see another side of this town.
In short -
It is up a steep hill so either hire a car or pay the 10 euro taxi ride. It is killer walk in the heat.
Get up in time for the sunrise. The view from the bedroom windows or terrace is amazing. You can see the islands, across to Gaeta and overlook Formia.
Take time to sit and appreciate the atmosphere in the gardens , with a cool drink of course.
Lovely breakfast and quite intimate so feels very different than staying in the average tourist hotel.
Good toiletries in room from toothbrush and paste, to razor and shaving cream. I was impressed.
Wifi available free of charge.
Want a foreign wedding ? Perfect location and they cater accordingly.
Really helpful staff.
Room spotless every day.
Take comfy shoes for the walk .......I learnt my lesson.
Slippers in the room. Wow! I'm easy pleased but they were useful with sore hot feet.
Will def return.
My 83 year old dad described the hotel as Eden!

We stayed here for five nights with our three year old daughter in April 2014. We used Formia as a base to travel to Naples by train for day trips. We also had a couple of lovely days exploring the coastal parks including the lovely Oasi Blu di Gianola. The Castello Miramare was a lovely base. The staff were friendly and helpful. The breakfasts were delicious and the views from the dining room were lovely. Our daughter was particularly taken with the owner's small dog!

I was stranded in Formia, because the ferry to the Island of Ventotene did not operate because of strong winds. Hence I was looking for a place to stay in the small port town in the very South of Lazio. I found this jewel on the hills overlooking the Thyrrenean Sea and will surely come back. The Castello is actually a big villa in the hills over the town. I had a small but beautiful room overlooking the beachfront and the harbour with a view to Gaeta and one could see the illuminated sky over Napoli in the evening. The hotel is one of these places of discreet luxury (that you find so often in Italy). I had it for only 80 Euros/night which is more than priceworthy!

The hotel is surrounded by a big garden under trees with sofas and little tables and is a wonderful place to relax before dinner.

The dinner itself I had in the hotel's restaurant. It was relatively expensive for Italian prices outside of Rome and Milano, but of excellent quality with homemade pasta and fresh fish and a bottle of wine from the region.

Just to note: you need a taxi or a car to go down to Formia.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view to the sea

I have been travelling for over 50 years. I have been visiting Italy since the early 70s. The night's stay here reminded me of all that is terrific about Italy, Italians and Italian service.
It also reminds me of how pleasurable travelling and visiting a different country can be. Forget the world that insists on rushing onwards at an ever increasing pace; come here relax, enjoy and contemplate the world around you at a different pace.
And yes, even the wireless internet here operates at a slower pace. :)

Room Tip: Always visit Italy outside of the busy season. There are always more choices

When you look at the advertisement for Hotel Castello Miramare you are taken in by the beauty.
It is beautiful, but be aware that there is false advertising involved. They do not mention that the hotel rooms are on the third floor with no elevator.
Upon arriving we realized it was not for us, and decided that we must change hotels which is already not pleasant. But to our surprise they made us pay for their lies. We ended up paying almost 200.00.
I think it is so unfair.....

Unexpected, above the bay...fabulous service, exquisite surroundings, and wonderful food. The view was fantqstic. Very relaxing, yet close to Gaeta and Speralonga for lunch....molto romantica. The family owned and run castle, is truly a castle with grnd service and grounds.

This castle has a fantastic view over the port of Formia, the bay and the city of Gaeta. Make sure to reserve a "sea view room" if you don't want to miss this attraction! The rooms are rather small but exclusively furnished and well equipped, in style with the air of the building. As we didn't want to leave for dinner we reserved a table at the hotel restaurant which originally looked like being rather expensive but after having been treated like royality (service and food) we found the menue very compatitive. Breakfast was served at the table and just perfect. "Lord & Lady Globusat" say thanks for this wonderful stay!
