The Hotel Palme is a no frills accommodation that is badly in need of an update with regards to the furnishings, bed linen and furniture. We did not spend a lot of time in the hotel so these facts did not effect us in a major way but there are some tips that will make your stay more bearable. The walls are paper thin and you WILL be disturbed by your neighbours - we had ear plugs and this made the world of difference. There are no tea and coffee making facilities in your room so pack a travel kettle (this is fairly common in hotels in Italy). As you may be aware there is only air con in the months of July & Aug so a small fan in our case a fan / heater combi was very worthwhile taking (when its hot its hot and when its cold it really drops and there is not source to control this in the room).
The food we had was decent ( we are vegetarian and were provided with alternatives). Breakfast (served between 730 -930 am) was cereal, fruit, yoghurt, various breads, melba toasts, and condiments ( jams, honey, chocolate etc), the usual cooked options, and various cakes and little packets of biscuits.
Each night ( 630pm or 8pm) you have the following days menu which you mark your request - three starters ( 2 pasta and 1 soup usually) and two mains ( meat option and fish option usually) followed by a wide selection of deserts. There is also a help yourself salad buffet which is also where you get your soup from. The staff were friendly and helpful but clearly over stretched.
Make sure you ask for your welcome cards from reception on arrival as these give you discounts on the ferries, cable car at Malcesnie as well as other places.
The bus "station" is easy to miss but is near to the hotel (when you get to the main road take a left where you will find a out door shop, followed by bike hire, a cafe and shop and the bus station with the ticket office).
The buses run from Riva to Verona (before going to Verona it detours to Pescheria - where you can get off and following a 10 min walk into the centre and pick up the bus route that goes around the other side of the lake). Never buy the bus tickets on the bus (cost alot more) - use the ticket offices in the larger resorts and the tobacconist in the smaller ones. A day ticket for the line mentioned earlier costs 13 euros for unlimited travel, other ticket price examples are Garda to Malcesnie single 2.80 and approx 480 up to Riva.
