We arrived after a long wait at the baggage carousel at Verona airport and instead of checking in, freshening up and enjoying a long-awaited drink, were told to leave our cases in reception and proceed immediately into dinner! This prophesied the rest of our stay inasmuch as this hotel insists on guests fitting in around its schedule instead of the hotel catering for its' guests. Anyway, let us move on,.,... all rooms are apparently identical, large with wooden floor, inferior dismal patterned bedspread and curtains (which are attached only at the top therefore gape when pulled), sofa/bed, one chair, no coffee table, dressing table with good-sized mirror but the fridge is underneath so you can't get your knees under, tiny bathroom with tiny shower cubicle and a couple of chairs on the terrace/balcony with small plastic table (we brought this inside to use). The bed was very comfortable and the sheets and pillowcases crisp cotton but why oh why inflict old, flat, lumpy foam pillows on us ? The pool is 1.7metres and has no shallow end, surrounded by well-kept lawns and olive trees. The sun-loungers are old, stained and flimsy. The clientele is mainly German and the food reflects this; dinner consists of a help-yourself salad buffet which has a good variety and was excellent, then a pasta dish served at your table (you keep the same table for the duration of your stay), followed by a main course concluding with a choice of help-yourself desserts. The pasta choices were good and very tasty but the main courses were repetitive, escalope with either a few oily fried potatoes or watery artichokes, fish, or some other meat which proved both inedible and undecipherable. Breakfast was the usual continental ham, cheese, bread, jam (never saw marmalade so don't look!), fruit salad which got darker in colour as the days progressed, and disgusting egg dishes - solid scrambled or under-cooked fried. Now to the good bits.....the hotel is clean, towels changed daily if wished and our bedding was changed once, mid-week. Toiletries were two sachets of shower gel and two tiny bars of soap, issued on arrival and not replaced (we take our own so this mattered not). The staff are very good and speak excellent German and good English. During our stay the temperature varied between 30`-35` yet we were told the air-conditioning is only switched on during July and August; as our room was south-facing and got full sun from midday on it was unbearable and we had to sleep with the door open although we were on the ground floor. We asked if they had a fan we could borrow but they had none. The rooms do not have tea/coffee-making facilities, take your own kettle etc. Dinner is taken in two sittings, either 6.30 or 8 pm. The German guests mainly take the earlier sitting.
All in all, this hotel is certainly not a 4*, possibly a 3*, but is well-situated out of Garda town and the free shuttle bus stops outside, running from approx. 09.10 to 12.20 and 16.10 to 19.40. We got a late deal with Inghams, paying under £400 each for half board for the week and with flights and transfers this was a very good deal but we would have been extremely annoyed had we paid the full amount. We thought we got what we paid for in this instance.
Would we go again? To the Lake Garda region most certainly but not to this hotel.
