“An enigma”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 June 2014

We arrived after a long wait at the baggage carousel at Verona airport and instead of checking in, freshening up and enjoying a long-awaited drink, were told to leave our cases in reception and proceed immediately into dinner! This prophesied the rest of our stay inasmuch as this hotel insists on guests fitting in around its schedule instead of the hotel catering for its' guests. Anyway, let us move on,.,... all rooms are apparently identical, large with wooden floor, inferior dismal patterned bedspread and curtains (which are attached only at the top therefore gape when pulled), sofa/bed, one chair, no coffee table, dressing table with good-sized mirror but the fridge is underneath so you can't get your knees under, tiny bathroom with tiny shower cubicle and a couple of chairs on the terrace/balcony with small plastic table (we brought this inside to use). The bed was very comfortable and the sheets and pillowcases crisp cotton but why oh why inflict old, flat, lumpy foam pillows on us ? The pool is 1.7metres and has no shallow end, surrounded by well-kept lawns and olive trees. The sun-loungers are old, stained and flimsy. The clientele is mainly German and the food reflects this; dinner consists of a help-yourself salad buffet which has a good variety and was excellent, then a pasta dish served at your table (you keep the same table for the duration of your stay), followed by a main course concluding with a choice of help-yourself desserts. The pasta choices were good and very tasty but the main courses were repetitive, escalope with either a few oily fried potatoes or watery artichokes, fish, or some other meat which proved both inedible and undecipherable. Breakfast was the usual continental ham, cheese, bread, jam (never saw marmalade so don't look!), fruit salad which got darker in colour as the days progressed, and disgusting egg dishes - solid scrambled or under-cooked fried. Now to the good bits.....the hotel is clean, towels changed daily if wished and our bedding was changed once, mid-week. Toiletries were two sachets of shower gel and two tiny bars of soap, issued on arrival and not replaced (we take our own so this mattered not). The staff are very good and speak excellent German and good English. During our stay the temperature varied between 30`-35` yet we were told the air-conditioning is only switched on during July and August; as our room was south-facing and got full sun from midday on it was unbearable and we had to sleep with the door open although we were on the ground floor. We asked if they had a fan we could borrow but they had none. The rooms do not have tea/coffee-making facilities, take your own kettle etc. Dinner is taken in two sittings, either 6.30 or 8 pm. The German guests mainly take the earlier sitting.
All in all, this hotel is certainly not a 4*, possibly a 3*, but is well-situated out of Garda town and the free shuttle bus stops outside, running from approx. 09.10 to 12.20 and 16.10 to 19.40. We got a late deal with Inghams, paying under £400 each for half board for the week and with flights and transfers this was a very good deal but we would have been extremely annoyed had we paid the full amount. We thought we got what we paid for in this instance.
Would we go again? To the Lake Garda region most certainly but not to this hotel.

My niece aged 50 & I aged 65 stayed at this hotel in June 12 & really enjoyed our stay. We arrived in the early hours of the morning later than expected & were met with a warm welcome & a meal. We had a very relaxed holiday; there were many German guest who were very charming. Having visited Italy many times over the last 40 years, I would say the food was typically Italian, not anglicised as food in many hotels & resorts that cater mainly for the British visitor. Th e walk to Garda takes about 10mins & the uphill walk back is gradual. For us the location was
good, we were glad to be a little out of town & enjoyed the mountain views. The pool was very clean & the gardens pleasant. Our rooms were well equipped & bathrooms clean, though the decor is typically Italian & rather dated, as many 4 * Italian hotels.

Room Tip: first floor rooms overlooking pool have mountain views

Arriving in the dead of night after a long journey I was rather dismayed when I was shown to my room after having been offered something to eat. It was like going into a time warp!!!! Some form of material had bee used instead of wallpaper and the dark curtains etc. mad it look very dated. In the daylight I could see that my first impressions were correct and this was definitely not a 4 star hotel!!! The staff were excellent and the room that we had was very clean, linen was changed 3 times in the week!!!. The food was good including 4 courses at dinner but with a very limited range of desserts but with eggs in 1 form or another for the hot option at breakfast. This is essentially a German hotel with omly a few English couples so a lot of the food is based on their requirements. Apart from a swimming pool with jacuzzi there are no other facilities at the hotel but a big new indoor swimming pool and sports complex is at the rear of the hotel. The hotel is some 2 km from the centre of Grada but there is a free shuttle bus to the centre form a bus stop just round the corner. As said previously the staff are great but the hotel definitely needs some serious updating

Room Tip: All rooms are the same

Just came back from this hotel - elegantly furnished , large airy rooms with solid cedar wood floors smelled heavenly when you walk in after being out! Set in magnificent landscaped grounds with large swimming pool to front and large lawn with sunbeds [with attached sun canopies! ] to the rear set in an olive grove - very tranquil. Our room [220] overlooked the olive grove/lawn. The car park/ parking for coaches is set away from the main building which spares guests from being disturbed by late arrivals/night revellers!.

The cuisine is [no surprise here] mainly Italian but is strongly influenced by the high proportion of German visitors also present, but was consistently well-presented and attractive - it certainly was a cultural difference being served COLD vegetables [e.g. brussel sprouts, cauliflower, carrots broccoli, etc] with the first course salad, and just ONE veg accompaniment with the main course [usually some form of potato] . English visitors were definitely in the minority during our stay, but all the dining room staff appeared to be multilingual and most helpful.

The reception staff however, were nowhere like as amenable and often gave misleading information which made us wary of asking them anything.

Purchased alcohol was a little on the expensive side [4 euros for a medium beer - less than 1 pt] and a bottle of sparkling water was also 4 euros. Cheapest bottle of local wine was 14 euros. and after-dinner aperitifs were 5 euros.

The biggest disappointment for us was the actual siting of the hotel - it is 20 minutes walk out of the centre of Garda. there is a small community bus which runs regularly which is free, manned by a very cheerful, happy individual who will serenade you whilst driving the bus, but the drawback is that the last bus back to the hotel is at 18.50pm. Taxis into the town are 10 Euros each way! As I have limited mobility, this precluded any nightlife. If you want to enjoy nightlife you either need to hire a car or have a well-lined pocket. The local transport aroud the lake is quite good and quite reasonable [ return ticket to Malcesine - 13 euros for 2 people av. journey time - 25 minutes. we also travelled around to the other side of the lake [Bardolino Lazie, Peschia and Sirmione - all stunning - but the journey was rather protracted[need to change a Pescheria for Simione and go to a different stop about 500 yards back along the main road ] so opted for the local water taxi which is 10 euros [one way] per person but did save an awful lot of time and it was fabiluous out on the lake!!!!

All in all, I would say that this is an ideal hotel to tour the surrounding area from or for someone wanting to stay in the tranquil atmosphere and soak up the sun, but anyone looking for nightlife or bustling activity would be better staying on the other side of the lake as Garda is quite sedate and rather up market - and characteristically expensive.

Overall service, staff and facilities were good, would rate this more as a 3 star than 4 mainly because the bedrooms were dated but they were very clean and tidy. We were a little worried about some of the comments on here before we left, but not too worried. Staff were friendly, welcoming and helpful. Food choices excellent, good pool, rooms serviced daily, reasonable views from some higher floor rooms. It is a short walk into the town of Garda and a bit of a hill on the way back, but there was a free bus service available. Could do more in the way of entertainment in the evenings as there was very little put on. Mainly older couples and families, not for people looking for a big night life. Garda is a pretty town with plenty of bars, restaurants and shops and of course lots of icecream! Would recommend going to visit Malcesine (north of the lake), Verona and Venice although all places on the lake that we visited were lovely. Overall a very enjoyable holiday.

My wife and I stayed here between 14th and 21st June. We were slightly worried about some of the negative comments on here (but only slightly worried as we have read reviews on here before bad mouthing hotels and then found them to be far from the truth). Again - as far as we are concerned the reviews were wrong.

The Hotel is very clean - the staff on reception always were friendly and dealt efficiently with any requests we made. The restaurant staff are superb. They work hard and always are friendly and helpful, as are the bar staff (but they are always on the look out for a tip!).

The food was very good. Excellent choice at breakfast - a full coffee pot and TEA is available despite what some have said on here - which pleased my wife! Dinner had ample choice - one criticism was the meat dish on 4 nights was escalope (and with no description of what the meat was on some occasions!!!!) You order your meal the night before or on the morning at brakfast - so if there is nothing you like there is ample opportunity not to use the restaurant - we used it every night and were never dissapointed)

The rooms are very comfortable and very clean. We were on the first floor overlooking the sports stadium. It was very quiet. The cleaning was excellent and the staff replenished soaps shower gel / shampoo every day.

Yes it is a good 15 minute walk down the hill to the lake front (20 minutes back because it is uphill and you are tired!) but it is not difficult and there is a free bus which runs till about 8 pm.

Yes the decor is a little dated and it really is only 3 star, but the chandalier in the beautiful lounge is impressive and the pool and gardens are superb.

I certainly would use this hotel again if I was staying in Garda - If you plan to stay here in the coming months don't believe all the moans on here the hotel is very good value for money (remember sometimes people expect 5 star quality for 3 star cost!) Enjoy.

My mum and I stayed in this hotel for a week, the location was great very quiet about 15 mins walk into the main restaurant shopping area of garda. we ate dinner in the hotel each night, the food was really good with great variety I woudl recommend staying here as half board. The breakfast was very good also, again great variety. Our room was very spacious, decor in the hotel is a bit dated but is very clean. the pool area was great and not too crowded plenty seating area in the bar and lobby area. It was a great base for exploring the lake garda area. I would highly both teh area and the hotel. Staff are also very friendly.
