Just returned from a 5 night stay at the Grande Hotel Gardone. This hotel is huge and dominates the water front at Gardone. The approach to the hotel from the road is far from glamerous and the reception area is dated. However the outlook at the back/lakeside of the hotel is lovely. The views across the lake from all the restuarants and bar areas is stunning and there is a lovely private promenade area running the whole length of the hotel where you can sit out and relax. The pool is small but adequate.

We had a lake side room with balcony which is a must as the road behind the hotel is very busy and noisey. The room was huge but the decor was unglamerous. The only downside was that our balcony view was slightly obscured by some large bushes which needed trimming back.

The restaurant and bar snacks are slightly over priced as are the drinks, especially bottles of water at the pool bar. The staff however are generally friendly and helpful but we did have trouble with the service at the bar in the evenings. Very attentive at first but then they tended to forget about you. We waited over 20 minutes for our bill one night before giving up and going to bed.

General I would say the hotel and Gardone itself is catered for and appeals to the older traveller. Although it is very pleasant and if you are looking for total relaxation then this is the place to come.

Watch out for the addtional charges for parking and WiFi access. Also although the ferry terminal is right next to the hotel, which is handy, we didnt find anywhere to rent a speed boat or have a speed boat trip in Gardone itself. We had to travel to neighbouring Salo for this which is much bigger with great shops and restuarants and a marina (ie much more going on).

Room Tip: Lakeside room is a must for the views and as the road behind the hotel is busy and noisy

The Grand hotel is situated right by beautiful Lake Garda. The rooms overlooking the lake have a brilliant uninterrupted view from the verandah. The rooms are narrow, hence the verandahs are quite close to the one from the rooms on either side. There was no wireless connection, but I suppose many who go there would prefer to relax by the pool or lake. Good a la carte restaurant, but half board buffet is also available. Piano bar in the evenings, and we were entertained by a fantastic duo on the piano and cello. Rather expensive room rates.

Room Tip: Ask for the rooms on the lake side

Stayed in Gardone Riviera at the the Grand Hotel for 5 days early September with my 'senior citizen' mum on our annual holiday together. This is what I would call a traditional hotel, with high ceilings, plush sofas and chairs, crystal chandeliers, lush plants and a 'quiet' feel. The ferry and the little train to the old town is immediately adjacent to the hotel.
Check in was easy, staff were professional and organised.
We had a corner junior suite and the views were truly magnificent! The room was fairly large, traditionally furnished, with a modern en-suite bathroom. The room was clean and tidy, and so was the rest of the hotel, though some parts - lift for example - could do with refurbishment/renewal.
We stayed half board, and were pleasantly surprised at the standard of food for dinner in particular, considering the high volume of people being served. Breakfast was good, but could have been better - more choice of fruits, juices (being picky!) - but the egg station was good.
There seemed to be sufficient sun loungers with no fight for a sunbed near the pool.
The hotel is directly on the lakeside, and there are seats along the front of the hotel with views over the lake. However, this area feels as though it's not really been thought through, and could be made so much better with more seating, and something to add even more of 'wow' factor - but very pleasant just the same!
Service was excellent, with attentive and polite staff. A disappointment was the price of drinks from the bar! Though the service, with accompanying hors d'oeuvres, softens the blow a little, in my experience of many an expensive hotel, this was really over the top price-wise for only standard measures. However, there's nothing to stop you having a drink at one of the nearby bars instead.
In summary, we totally enjoyed our stay, would go again...but those bar prices?!

Room Tip: Lakeside view is a must/some rooms have bigger balconies, so if this is important to you, specify wh...

Probably the best feature of this hotel is its location. It is the only one with direct extensive and private lakefront view and access. The rooms are clean and spacious, some with lovely views of the lake (pay extra and get such rooms, it is worth it). One additional big plus for the hotel is the ample seating areas, both inside the hotel (lobby, bar, library, etc) and the outdoors ones right on the lake with lovely chairs, sofas and tables. You can sit for hours on end watching the breathtaking view of the lake in the seclusion of the hotel's private gardens and beachfront; this is truly priceless. The hotel also offers internet, though at a nominal fee, but that is quite an advantage when you are spending time at a resort and need to access your business emails. Pay for the breakfast if it is not already included in the rate because the breakfast is simply amazing: plentiful, varied and quite tasty. You do get your money's worth at this hotel and again, the location, the view and the access to the lake are unbeatable!! The only thing you need to keep in mind is that there is only one elevator and it was down a couple of times when we were there. If you are travelling with an elderly person, this could be a problem. If ever at Lake Gardone, this is the place to stay.

Room Tip: Get a room with a lakeview; it is worth every penny!

I wish to be kind, so here goes my soft-shoe review: This hotel is not for the well-heeled, monied type. This is not a fancy, posh hotel, and while it may have all of the ameneties of a 4 star, it is not an elegant 4 star, and no where near to being a 5 star. This is a run-down, rather dirty property. Not well kept, and in need of a major overhaul. For weeks, we were debating between this hotel and another in Lake Garda, a return to a 5 star boutique hotel. We chose the 5 star hotel, and when we revisited in August, we were so very pleased we did not choose the Grand Gardone (or what we referred to as the Grand Gardump). We can only imagine the folks that rave about this hotel are simply very low-budget travelers, and that is fine and well for them, but if you are in need of high standards and elegant surroundings, this is not the place. We ate in the bar/snack restaurant one afternoon, and the entire place just felt dirty and dingy. Not at all appealing, even on the outside sitting terrace. The wait staff were not terribly forthcoming, and we were happiest when we were leaving. We walked the whole of the property, and to be quite honest, the balconies and outdoor areas seemed dirty and poorly kept. Not at all inviting. We were most confused by the glowing reviews of this property on this site. Again, it must be a tour group mind-set that simply settles for the lower standards at low rates (and some even complained about the rates being high--you must be joking. This hotel has one of the lowest rates in Garda!) At any rate, if you are looking for classy and elegant and sophisticated living, this is not the hotel for you. You do get what you pay for when it comes to hotel standards. The pictures look so very much better online than the property in actuality.

We have recently returned from a wonderful stay at this hotel. All staff were great and the answer to all request seemed to be yes.
The food was great every evening as was breakfast each morning. The wine list was good and not to madly priced, some of the other drinks pricey, especially the soft drinks at the pool bar.
Great stunning location
The travel agent next to the hotel with the discount card from reception were great for organising trips.
Also out side there is a cracking little family bar called Rosetta, they
are great people it all added to
great week,hope to go back

This is an expensive hotel, but from the moment you arrive you start to understand why, the service. To describe the hotel as faded granduer would do it an injustice, it is grand and is perhaps showing its age in parts, however it is immaculate if dated.
The position is fabulous, right on the lake side. Rooms are large, comfortable, clean and I believe most have lake views, The attached bathrooms are up to date and well serviced by the staff.
Food was excellent and all dining areas allow you to eat outside, or at least under awnings if you desire. What is not so great are the prices. The hotel is expensive and indeed Northern Italy is generally, but I thought that many of the food and drink prices were over the top in this establishment. I expect to pay for service and hotel position but felt a little uncomfortable with these.
In summary a well run hotel, a little on the expensive side, with fantastic service.
