“The Grand Hotel Gardonne is as near perfect as you can get.”
Reviewed 15 July 2009

We first learnt of the Grand Hotel from 2 friends who have themselves been repeat visitors a total of 5 times to this establishment. We are eternally grateful to them for introducing us to this wonderful hotel. This was our second visit and it proved just as magical as the first.
We cannot speak too highly of all of the staff, who were friendly, courteous, efficient, very professional and most welcoming. They all helped to make our visit near perfect. The food was delicious, the menu varied, the cocktails and wine, whilst a trifle expensive, was very palatable.
Whilst we acknowledge that parts of the hotel are a trifle dated in appearance, this adds to both its character and charm. We booked a Junior Suite and was given one on the 3rd floor in the old part of the building. Despite its creaky wooden floor and dated furniture, it had the most spectacular lake views and quiet surroundings.
Finally, the location of the Hotel is absolutely superb being on the waterfront, south facing and it is a moments walk to catch one of the many boats that call into Gardonne Riviera. Who could ask for more?

Just returned from a week in the Grand Hotel and what great place it is, I totally agree with the comments made by previous contributors. The drinks are somewhat expensive, and so we went into the town to drink in the evenings - problem solved.
The views from the rooms are fantastic we had room 130 - which was not such a long walk as others which were in the other end of the building.

Food, excellent plenty of variety, took us most of the week to get the eggs correctly cooked at breakfast but then that is part of the holiday....

All told one of the best hotels we have had the pleasure of staying in.

The Grand Hotel is arguably the BEST LOCATED HOTEL on the lake with a private waterfront overlooking stunning views towards the eastern side. Built in the grand style not seen in modern constructions, the hotel is spacious, classically proportioned with superb balcony views over the water, elegant public rooms, bars and a magnificent dining room with lakeside dining terrace NO WONDER WINSTON CHURCHILL CHOSE IT !. It is a must to have a room overlooking the lake as the other side faces a busy road. Food is excellent with lavish breakfast catering for English as well as European tastes. Dinner menues are comprehensive and varied featuring many local dishes.Thusday night is a particularly pleasing Italian menue. Staff are attentive and polite, delivering a most polished service in all areas. NO GUEST COULD SERIOUSLY FAULT THIS HOTEL. ANY THAT HAVE MADE NEGATIVE COMMENTS MUST BE PROFESSIONAL" NIT PICKERS", AND SHOULD BE IGNORED. We had a great experience there and will certainly go back again, Lake Garda wouldn't be the same without The Grand!

You Just know its going to be good, when the Porter was there waiting for us when the coach from the airport stopped.
This is without doubt the most relaxing hotel we have ever stayed in.
Our Room 132 had both a balcony with double doors and a window with a view over the swimming pool to the lake. The Room was a mix of new, (The Beds, Wooden Floor, Chairs, Curtains and a fully refurbished bathroom) and Old, ( Bedside Cabinets, Table and Wardrobe) all very good quality,
The Food at Breakfast is very good and varied
The Food in the evening is excellent, The Set Italian Night Menu on Thursdays is superb and was the highlight of highlights
The staff are superb and attentive
Drinks a Little pricey, but the quality of the wines we tried were very good and of better quality than those served in UK Resteraunts for a similar price, But Happy Hour In Winnies bar can really help
All in All we will be back, as we have never ever had such a relaxing holiday

When searching this site for a hotel on Lake Garda, I settled on the Grand Hotel Gardone Riviera. It was always meant to be a romantic stay, as it was my intention to propose, so I booked the Churchill Suite for its picturesque setting. From the moment I arrived at the hotel, my partner and I were made to feel very special. We were escorted to our suite by a friendly girl on reception who took great delight in watching our surprise and glee when she opened the door. The views from this twin balcony suite are simply breathtaking. The room was very clean with an equally clean huge bathroom.

I have stayed at many hotels, and there is always a feeling that a large hotel can come at the price of reduced customer service. Not in this case. Every member of staff you passed would greet you with a warm smile. Everyone from the reception to the restaurant staff were continually eager to please, but not in a pushy way. Nothing was too much trouble.

I am already looking forward to a return visit with my future wife. As you can tell, she said yes!

I have been to the Grand hotel every year for the past 10 years.
The location is the most beatiful, right next to the lake ( 2 meters away ).
The bar and restaurant have wonderful views over the lake, staff is very attentive and friendly. Pool area is right by the lake and large enough so it
doesn´t get overcrowded. The hotel is very long so it has it´s own promenade basically. When you step out of the hotel you are right in the car free part of Gardone, which is very quaint with small shops and nice little restaurants and cafes.
The hotel definately needs to remodel the rooms, they are old and shabby but you live with it because the views from the balcony are great. The furniture and carpets desperately need to be changed. The restaurant is very good but overpriced (there are so many great restaurants nearby).I love the Grand Hotel for the wonderful location and quietness, but please start to work on it before it runs down.

My wife and I have just returned from 2 weeks at this hotel. It is in a very good location right by the lake (but I would strongly suggest paying a supplement for a lake view as the other side overlooks a busy road). The jetty for the lake boats is just next to the hotel, and so very handy. If you go towards the end of September please be aware that boats, shops and restaurants begin to reduce in number/close then, and things virtually stop towards the end of October (and this hotel shuts). Evening meals are very good - the waiters do make a big thing of serving the food at the table, but that's fine with me (and they are especially good with the fish - removing bones). Breakfast is fine - there has been mention of the fruit salad being tinned, and some of it is, but there is also a wide range of fresh fruit added (including starfruit) as well as there being a stack of whole fruit (including the biggest peaches I've seen). What no-one told us was that you can at breakfast ask the waiter (who comes to ask if you want tea or coffee) for omelettes, soft boiled eggs, fried eggs, poached eggs - and if you don't like the coffee in pots - cappuccino, latte etc.. The drinks in the hotel are expensive - so turn left out the hotel (towards Salo) and walk to a supermarket about 15 minutes away and get wine (from 80p a litre), beer and spirits. Back at the hotel, just ask at the bar for a glass or two of ice for the room; then sit on the balcony and enjoy! There is a mini-bar fridge in the room, but there is room for your own things. There is no tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms - so bring a kettle (and ask for cups and saucers from the restaurant - no problem at all). One thing to be aware of is that everything (whether food or coffee) usually comes lukewarm - if you want hot coffee you need to ask for it 'caldo' and sometimes it still comes only warm. Getting a large coffee is hard - it is not usual in Italy it seems.
