The terrace is spectacular and eating and drinking on it is the high point of the visit. The staff are all friendly and helpful and the rooms are clean and good. We though the quality of the food not up to the standard we would expect from a five star hotel.

Our room was No.15, which had a King size bed, magnificent private terrace with 2 sun lounges, table setting for 4 with shade umbrella, and incredible panoramic views over Lake Garda.

The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful, from the 2 ladies at the reception to the restaurant staff. Although the hotel offered high speed wireless internet access I did not have my laptop with me, but the reception offered me the use of a laptop on several occasions which i was able to bring to my room. Although I expected to be charged by the hour for internet access as stated in the hotel booklet, they offered this to me at nom charge. A little thing, but much appreciated.

Our room was very large, clean, furnished with antiques and since it was a corner room with windows on neach side plus the terrace doors, it was bright, cheerful, clean and offered sweeping views. However I think this room was classified as a Jr. Suite. The doors to other empty rooms were opened as we walked by and I noted that there is a huge variation to room size, and light levels. The smaller rooms at the back side of the hotel without lake views were the smallest, so try to ensure you don't get stuck into one of those, as your experience will probably be a bit disappointing.

The hotel is furnished throughout with antique furniture, and huge antique paintings, so if "oldy-worldy" is not your scene and you prefer modern contemporary furnishings, this hotel is not for you! But the antiques were beautiful and made for an elegant, refined and exquisitely appointed hotel.
The restaurant was located right on the main terrace and all tables enjoyed panoramic views over Lake Garda and the mountains opposite. The cost of our dinner, which consisted of 2 homemade pastas as starters, 2 main courses, dessert and a bottle of local wine cost 99€ - not cheap, but not expensive considering the beautiful surroundings, the service and quality of the food.

Very romantic hotel!

If you are wanting to feel like the most special person on earth then visit this hotel. The surroundings are amazing, the staff professional and polite and the hotel itself is excellent. Yes things are very expensive but we expected this. Our stay was for a honeymoon and I honestly could not have chosen a more perfect location. It was quiet and romantic but there were more busy towns close by if you fancied something different. Every village that we visited along the Lake was stunning, especially Riva...this was well worth a visit.

We stayed as part of our honeymoon in September 08 and here are the good bits:
- Gorgeous location overlooking the lake, quite stunning
- Charming old building that fits well into the history of the area. The grounds are really delightful.
- Lovely room on the top floor with a small terrace and an endless view. Quite spacious and bright with well finished decor.
- Friendly staff. A couple of the female front desk staff were particularly helpful with recommendations
- They provide a shuttle into the town a few times a day
- The main terrace - lovely place to sit and enjoy the view with a glass of Prosecco.

Not so good bits:
- The resturant is vastly expensive. I can't say "overpriced" because it's probably the right price for the number of staff they have in there. They are trying a achieve a five star dining experience but it's empty most nights except for the 10 waiters hovering at your side. We ate there twice when we couldn't be bother to go out and on one of those occasions I had to send both my starter and main course back as they were so poor. The other meal I had there was fine.
- Access. It's quite a walk up/down the steep drive. You need a taxi to go anywhere for dinner and a car for general getting around.

Other things to know about:
- we viewed a couple of rooms in the main/old part of the building out of curiosity. Amazing size and one has a huge balcony (big enough for a cocktail party if you felt so inclined) but the interiors in these rooms look untouched since the 1940s. I could see why some people feel the rooms are dated if they stay in one of these.

  • Liked — The charm of the building and the location
  • Disliked — The restaurant

My husband and I stayed at Villa del Sogno for 10 days as part of our honeymoon at the end of June/beginning of July 2008. We decided to splash out on a 5* hotel and we were very glad we did - it was well worth it!

This was by far the best hotel either of us have ever stayed in. We have not stayed in a 5* hotel before but have stayed in many 4* hotels and this was in a completely different class. The hotel is beautiful and very well looked after, with stunning views over the lake from the terrace and from many of the rooms. The service was first class, and the food and wine were divine.

Our room at the hotel was amazing. We had a suite at the corner of the hotel with not one but TWO private balconies. The first was a small but beautiful roofed balcony overlooking the lake, with climbing flowers growing up the pillars. The second was a very large private terrace overlooking the hotel's beautiful gardens and pool.

The furniture in the room was old, but it was very well looked after and beautiful, all in very good condition, not at all the "shabby chic" described by some other reviewers on this site. The room was nicely decorated in period style and the antique furniture went very well with the decor.

The bathroom was large with a jacuzzi bath, which was perfect for a honeymoon! Our only tiny criticism would be that there wasn't a proper shower in the room - just a shower attachment for the bath taps, and there was no shower curtain/screen, so if you used the shower attachment it was tricky not to get water on the bathroom floor.

We could not have asked for better service at the hotel. As soon as we arrived a porter took our bags to the room, and when we went in he opened up all the shutters and doors out to the balconies and showed us all the facilities in the room. Within a couple of minutes of our arrival a waiter arrived with a complimentary bottle of champagne to congratulate us on our marriage, which he served to us out on the balcony overlooking the lake.

Every day our room was cleaned to a very high standard during the morning, and then while we were out for dinner in the evening the bed was turned down, the shutters were closed and the bedside lamps put on ready for our return from dinner. The reception staff were very friendly and welcoming, and were happy to help with any query we had.

We had booked half board so had dinner at the hotel every night. The food was so good that we didn't want to go anywhere else. We ate on the terrace overlooking the lake most nights (except one day when there was a thunderstorm so we ate indoors). The half board menu was brilliant, with a different four-course menu to choose from every night. The food was always beautifully cooked and the waiter service was excellent. All of the waiters are charming and speak very good English. Many of them are multi-lingual - we also heard waiters speaking French and German with other guests. The specialist wine waiters are happy to help you choose a wine from the extensive wine list. Even the cheaper wines on the list were better than most wines you'd find in British restaurants.

The pool area was also great - because the hotel is not too big the pool was never too busy, and the bar and poolside cafe were perfect for getting lunch if we stayed at the hotel during the day. The food here was simpler than in the main restaurant but the quality was just as good. We didn't find anywhere that served such good food when we ate out for lunch. It was great to be able to order drinks from our poolside sunloungers, and the waiters here were just as charming as the rest of the staff. I can highly recommend the milkshakes (made simply with fresh fruit and milk - very tasty), and the measures of Pimms were very generous and perfect to cool down with on a warm afternoon! Every pair of sunloungers had a large parasol with them so those (like me) with sun-sensitive skin always have the option of sitting in the shade, and there were fresh towels provided next to the pool throughout the day.

The shuttle service from the hotel to and from the centre of Gardone was great, and drops you right next to the ferry stop at times that correspond to the ferries arriving (giving you a few minutes spare to buy tickets). Even if you miss the shuttle it only takes about 15 minutes to walk into the town down the hill through the hotel gardens (although walking back is much more tiring as it's uphill!).

One thing we would suggest is that if you go to this hotel DON'T book with Inghams. Although the Inghams staff in Gardone were charming, the coach transfers to and from the airport were terrible. We had booked a two-centre break staying in Venice for a few days before going to Villa del Sogno. The transfer from Venice to Gardone took us almost 7 hours and wasted a day of our holiday (it should be a 2 hour journey). This was because Inghams took us on one coach from Venice to the airport, then we had to transfer to another coach and wait for 2 hours (in a stifling hot coach with the air conditioning switched off) for other people to arrive, before travelling via 12 other hotels in different resorts before we arrived at Villa del Sogno. We were not told that the journey would take this long so we had not taken any food with us and there was no opportunity to get food en route. There was little information given to us by the Inghams people during this journey, and the Inghams rep even left the coach half way to our resort leaving us with a bus driver who did not speak any English. There were only child-sized seatbelts on the coach between Venice and the airport (not big enough to fit across an adult), although the seatbelts on the coach from the airport to Gardone were OK. There was also no choice of airline with Inghams so we had to travel with a very basic budget airline despite going on a 5* holiday. It would have been nice to have the option of a better airline. We were not impressed with this service given the amount we had paid for the holiday!

We would not travel with Inghams again but we'll certainly go back to Villa del Sogno (but we'll arrange our own travel arrangements next time!). Despite the terrible journey this was the best holiday of our lives - which is testament to just how brilliant the Villa del Sogno was.

The only bad thing about Villa del Sogno is that it has spoiled us for the future, so other hotels will never seem good enough in comparison! A wonderful place.

This was the first of 3 Italian stops for our honeymoon and we could not have asked for more.

The staff were friendly yet professional and attentive and we feel that any request would have been gladly met.

The location was excellent and views over the lake from both the terrace or our bedroom balcony never ceased to impress. Having had a walk around the centre of Gardone we were very glad we did not choose the Grand hotel which was less personal, more run down and less private (considering we had a wander around their pool and bar area).

Our superior room was sufficient - clean, large enough, a/c with a bath and shower attachment. Agreeing with previous reviews the decor did seem a bit dated but we felt this just added to it's charm - the wallpaper and paint were all in good condition.

One criticism is the timing of the shuttle buses into the centre mean that you either need to brave walking up the hill or get a taxi if you would like to eat out.

In summary, we had a fantastic 4 nights there and would recommend and would return.

We stayed 20th August for 6 days, I had been in contact with Grazia from early september last year, emailing her re what suites they had and what they had to offer, anyway with her patience in answering my e-mail questions, I booked room number 5 which would suit 2 adults and 2 teenagers as it had 2 outside balconies with lake views.

We were not disappointed with our choice as we had a fantastic view from our balconies.

The breakfast and evening meal were superb as well as the service you could not fault, all the staff that we met were very friendly and helpful.

So we would like to thank everyone at the Villa del Sogno for making our stay there fantastic.

We will be back.
