My husband and I spent two weeks at this hotel in July, we had booked a deluxe lake view room
with balcony and paid quite a large supplement for it. When we arrived the room allocated to us
was lovely but had what we were told was a french balcony which meant we could not sit out on it. As it is a french window which when open just has a railing in front of it. When we asked to be moved we were told the hotel was full but on asking again a few days later we were finally moved to a room with a full balcony. The reception staff were hit and miss some helpful others not. We wanted to get tickets to a concert at nearby Victorialle but were told by reception we would have to go to the concert venue and purchase them there. However I was able to book them myself online. We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis and as has already been stated in other reviews the breakfast was not good. A terrible toast machine in place which takes ages and very limited hot food unless you want to pay extra. We had dinner in the hotel only once
as the food and atmosphere were not great. The hotel itself was quiet clean and comfortable and we had slippers and dressing gowns in the room the views are lovely. Gardonne is very pretty but the selection of restaurants and shops is limited especially if you are staying for more than a few days. Children and teenagers would find it very dull, if returning to Garda
we would stay in nearby Salo which is much bigger and livlier.

Room Tip: If booking a room with a balcony make sure you ask for one you can sit out on. Some rooms have what...

This hotel is based in quiet Gardone Riveria. The location of the hotel is beautiful, however after about 2 days we were rather bored of Gardone as there are a good choice of restaurants but they officer very similar menus and none that really stood out to us. There were only restaurants and no wine bars of any sort which made it a bit boring for those used to busier locations.

The hotel staff were extremely lovely and always at hand. Very pleasing service.

The room was lovely, and we had a little view of the lake. The room was cleaned to a high standard every day, with fresh towels. We were also given complimentary beach towels, robes and slippers. The only downside to the room was the hairdryer was useless for those with thick hair, after 20 minutes I gave up. The balconies were lovely, but unfortunately we did not enjoy it due to rain.

The pool was clean and an adequate size. There were lots of loungers available but get there early for a good location.

The jacuzzi and steam room were lovely and there were even little lounges to relax.

The breakfast was disappointing however. The hot food served was not to one's taste and the sausages and black beans were unusual to a British customer. The bread provided was often quiet hard for one who prefers fresh bread. There was cheese and ham served with breakfast but no croissants which would have been more edible than hard rolls in the morning. The coffee served was very bitter for those who prefer a sweeter taste. The breakfast made us weary of eating in the evening so we did not do so.

Overall, we were pleased with the hotel and it was a nice stay. But would suggest those who prefer something a bit more upbeat to stay at perhaps Garda or Sirimonie and stay here for two nights. For those who would like restaurants close by, day trips by boat and a beautiful view this is an ideal location.

Room Tip: A view of the lake would be worth the money !

There are so many reviews on this site that express disappointment, but they seem to have in common being on a Great Rail Journeys package. Apart from the fact that Gardone is not very near a railway (!!!!!), I would simply suggest coming here under other auspices. We travelled with Cresta, and had 10 nights at Savoy Palace this month. We had a nice time, but there are definitely strategies to employ - above all (no pun intended), ensure you are on the fourth or fifth floor for lovely lake view. Below that, forget it. We were originally shown a 3rd floor room, which had little of a lake view as per our reservation. The receptionist very obligingly switched us to a 5th floor room (doing a good job at expressing surprise at our request, but it is clear from other reviews on this site that this is a regular occurence!), which was spacious, with a good bathroom and wardrobe space, and comfy bed, plus little balcony with space for just 2 chairs - but what a view!
Unfortunately, halfway through our stay a leak in the roof meant we had to switch rooms. This was done efficiently, and we were shown a choice - we ended up directly below our previous room, this time with kettle, and still a decent view.
The hotel staff were courteous and efficient, notably waiter Marcello. Breakfast was a generous and tasty buffet (though the hot food was a bit curious to English tastes, likely to be the main users - a sort of chili beans option not my idea of breakfast fare), served atmospherically by the pool, when fine (we had 2 or 3 rather wet days). Candlelit dinner was also served here, a 3 course option for 29 euros for hotel guests - we just had this once, but enjoyed it. I don't think I'd care to eat inside, as there are a number of alternatives in Gardone, on the lake front and in the parallel lane between it and the main road, many very good. We also enjoyed the complimentary drink and snacks on the terrace one evening, and we loved the pool area - though if the hotel was full, you'd need to be quick to get a sun lounger.
Gardone is a lovely quiet resort, with excellent bus and boat connections elsewhere on the lake - it is an asset to the hotel to be so close to both - and a short walk to interesting Heller Gardens, and a bit further to Il Vittoriale, an extraordinary building with extraordinary grounds (plan to spend several hours here). If you only take one trip out, we liked Riva better than Malcesine or Sirmione or Limone, but all of these were worth a visit too.
Finally, during our stay we met no less than 3 couples (two British, one Swedish) at the hotel who were on at least their third visit - I bet they didn't come with Great Rail Journeys! We too would return.

Room Tip: Demand to be on the top 2 floors!

Dear Guest,

we would like to thank you for the positive words and for having appreciated your stay with us. We are really pleased you enjoyed our garden, the pool and the restaurant area, and our beautiful terrace with its stunning lake view.
We understand that on the higher floors the rooms have a better view but rooms on the lower floors have a nice view too, since the hotel is directly located by the lake.
Thanks a lot for your comment about the staff. We always do our best to satisfy our clients' desires!
We look forward to welcoming you once again in the near future

I read with interest previous reviews regarding the Savoy Palace, having also traveled with Great Rail Journeys. We considered the hotel to be quite delightful and in a great position to enjoy the lake. The building had a charm and our bedroom was very comfortable. However, the food was quite awful and very disappointing. I see by the managers comments that the menu had been agreed by Great Rail Journeys, and in writing, they sounded appetising but the reality did not match up, especially to a "first class holiday". We ate out whenever we could, which was not part of our plan. There was a choice for breakfast, but always the same choice of hot food. When we asked it we could eat on the terrace, on our first morning, we were told that as part of the group we had to eat inside. On the second day we were allowed to eat outside but in no way were we afforded the same service or quality of food (or choice) as independent guests. Although the organisation by the travel company was good, as was the attention of our tour guide, the experience of the Savoy totally undermined the enjoyment of our holiday, I am sad to say.

Also just returned from a Great Rail Journeys experience and agree with the previous review entirely, especially the food. The comments were spot on. Treated as second class guests compared to the other, non group guests. One particular meal was duck a l'orange. I was surprised to have a duck leg, not breast. Although not specified on the menu. The leg was tough, difficult to cut with knife provided and very chewy, again served with a sparse amount of vegetables. I have however given 4 stars as I thought it unfair to knock two off because of the food as staff, service, location and rooms and bar area were really very good. We had a second floor lake view room which was fine for my wife and I even with the offending tree, which did not obliterate the view of the lake entirely. The biggest plus was the weather, no complaint for our holiday.

Room Tip: The nearer the top, the better the view of the lake. Although this is not everyone's priority.

Dear Guest,

thank you very much for the review you left on tripadvisor. First of all we would like to thank you for your positive comment about the hotel, the rooms, facilities, service and the staff.

Regarding the food we would like to inform you that at the beginning of the season a choice of menus has been sent to Great Rail Journeys in order to combine the dishes they preferred. The menu has been accorded as following: there is a salad buffet, also with cooked vegetables and different kinds of cheese. You can choose between between 2 first and 2 second dishes and at the end a dessert will be served.
We also inform you that all our guests appreciate very much our chef's cuisine and we never receive any complaints regarding the dishes we offer in our restaurarant!

We hope to welcome you again in the Savoy Palace in the future.

We've just stayed here for seven nights with Great Rail Journeys and our general opinion of the hotel is that it is good, but with some significant reservations about the food which is what influenced my overall rating of average. Rooms are very comfortable and, providing you get a room with a lake view above the second floor then you do actually get to see good views of the lake. Below the third floor your view is quite likely to be obliterated by the large trees in front of the hotel. We were allocated a first floor room initially but complained and were readily shifted to a fifth floor room the next morning, thanks to the very efficient Ingrid. Facilities at the hotel are good, but for us the real let-down was the food. Breakfasts were fine with hot or cold options and plenty of selection. However, we were on demi-pension terms with a choice of only two (mediocre) options for starters and main course and absolutely no choice for dessert. Given this is a four-star hotel and the considerable price we paid for the holiday (over £1,800 each for the 10 day trip) this was, in our opinion, poor. I've had better main food in two-star hotels in Garda on past holidays. The starter and main courses were more like school dinners some evenings and quantities served were rather mean (although given some of the menus that was probably just as well - 101 things to do with mashed potato!). We were made to feel like second-class citizens as the beautiful desserts available to other guests were on display yet we were not allowed them - they simply went to waste at the end of the evening - criminal!. They need to get a more imaginative chef and adopt a far more flexible approach for demi-pension guests. Little or no vegetarian food options were available and omelettes were offered most nights. the restaurant service was also a bit haphazard on occasion. Would I recommend this hotel? Yes, if you're just doing bed and breakfast, but don't bother with half-board or going with Great Rail Journeys on demi-pension rates. There are much better bars and restaurants for evening dining in the resort. A real shame, because all the staff were very courteous and helpful, in particular Ingrid on the reception desk who got us the alternative room without any fuss or bother.

Room Tip: Make sure you pay for a lake view and also insist on a room on above the second floor. Otherwise you...

Dear Guest,

thank you for your kind comment about the hotel and its facilities. We were pleased to read, that after you had reported your complaint on the room at the front-desk, your wish to have a better view has been satisfied, so during your stay you could enjoy the beautiful scenery of the lake.

Regarding the food we would like to inform you that at the beginning of the season a choice of menus has been sent to Great Rail Journeys in order to make a choice of the menu they preferred. The choice is rich:
there is a salad buffet with cooked vegetables and different kinds of cheese. Further on there is a choice between 2 first and 2 second dishes and the dessert. Our waiters are pleased to offer also a choice to vegetarians or persons who are intolerant to any food. Our chef has been working with passion for several years in the hotel, and all our clients appreciate the cuisine.

I would like to point out that if you had notified to the management your complaints during your stay, we would have been able to intervene immediately and find a solution. Also the tour leader during the stay never had notified problems regarding the food.

We hope to welcome you again in the Savoy Palace in the future.

The Hotel is well situated by the lake and just a couple of minutes walk to several good restaurants, a deli with meats, cheeses, wine, water and salads etc. The reception staff are exceptional, very friendly, helpful and nothing is too much trouble for them. Sebastiano in the restaurant and terrace bar also goes that extra mile and could not be more pleasant and helpful. The swimming pool was smaller than the photograph depicted but adequate. Staying on the fifth floor in both the rooms we found the beds incredibly hard but the staff soon helped out by putting toppers on the mattress, which definitely helped. We had upgraded to have balcony's but found the balcony to be very small. Like another reviewer, we found the restaurant food not that good so chose to eat at the many nearby restaurants. We also felt the restaurant lacked ambience even though you could sit inside or beside the swimming pool, it was far nicer to sit by the lake side restaurants. The breakfast selection was the usual selection of breads, meats, cheeses, pastries, fresh fruit, and then the hot buffet side and unlike another review we found it well stocked no matter what time we arrived for breakfast. The coffee at breakfast left a lot to be desired but I am somewhat of a coffee fanatic. However, excellent coffee is served at all the restaurants along the lake. Again like another reviewer, we felt so much more could be done with the hotel, especially in relation to the restaurant. On Saturday evenings on the terrace, free prosecco and nibbles are served, which is a nice touch. In summary the hotel was adequate but enhanced by the wonderful attitudes of reception staff Veronica, Sigrid and Marileena as well as waiter Sebastiano. I would put the hotel at three and half stars rather then four star but still recommend it to anyone wanting to stay in Gardone.

Room Tip: We only stayed in fifth floor with balcony facing the lake and found the rooms quiet and good views
