“Du Lac Hotel on Lake Garda”
Reviewed 31 May 2013

Just stayed for 5 days at the hotel as a 30th wedding anniversary. The hotel has lots of reviews. Our view was, that the hotel was spotless. The rooms although a little small were cleaned everyday, with fresh towels. The bathroom has a good sized shower. By the way we stayed on the 3rd floor room 302 on the front over looking the superb views of the lake. The hotel serves a continental breakfast each morning with the usual meat, cheese, yogurt, cereal etc. Just helped yourself. The position of the hotel is right on the lake, so really romantic. Around the hotel are bars and restaurants. We found the food at both Emelianos and Wimmer really good. Both varied in price between 40 euros and 50 euros. Pizzas seemed to be the biggest part on most restaurants pages, starting at 4 euros up to 1o/12 euros. Beware they are usually massive 14-16" size. The bar at the back of the square and right next door were really good. Beer was about 5 euros. Wine in the restaurants varied from the house white/red for 6 euros for a 1/2 ltr- 10 euros for 1 ltr. There are plenty of sights to see, and if you enjoy a walk, Salo is about 2.5 miles, and Maderno is 3.5 miles in the other direction. We decided to walk one day to San Michelle. It is all village at the top of the mountain (serious walk) about 5 mile up. Got there, sweating buckets 2 restaurants. 1 was shut the other said no beer (ran out) I think he understood my english. Really not worth the walk, but the views brill. Botanical gardens are 5 mins away, if you are into that sort of thing. The trips on the lake are a little expensive. We went to Sirmione taking the slow boat out for the sights which takes 2hrs, and the fast boat back 1hr. It cost 45 euros. The other trips vary between 27-37 euros each. It takes about 1hr-1.5hrs to get to the hotel. This was the expensive bit. Holiday firm wanted £287, the taxi (book before you get there) was £215, and a car is around £150 All in all, I would recommend the hotel for cleanliness and positioning. There are no banging bars, and it is very quiet when you want to get to sleep. Romantic and relaxing I think would sum it up.

This hotel is set in the very best of settings. Although we were a little worried what we might get, we were pleasantly surprised.

All the rooms have a balcony and face the lake, and the hotel is away from the busy road, so unlike most hotels around- there is no road noise!

Breakfast is quite basic, but is included. There is no swimming pool, (but if you want this, pay double the price to stay elsewhere). There are very reasonable public beaches, and a private beach with swimming pool all close by.

Restaurant food at the hotel is very good value, and there are many great restaurants around too.

We picked this hotel because it was directly overlooking Lake Garda. When we arrived the staff were extremely helpful with great information. The hotel is very modestly priced but when we got to our room we were amazed at the size for the price, there was just the the two of us but big enough for four. We also had a massive big balcony overlooking the lake. The breakfast was continental and a lot of variety to suit all. Gardone Riviera is very beautiful with cobbled streets and great inexpensive restaurants. A really good base to explore Lake Garda. Would definitely stay again

Our third trip to Gardone Riviera. We'd tried 2 expensive hotels but had spotted the Du Lac and thought we would try it. Facing directly on the lake with balcony rooms, we knew it wasn't deluxe like the others but the price was half or less. You get what you pay for.they say.
The reviews here were so varied it was hard to tell what to expect. We liked it. The lobby is nice as is the front desk area and the elevator is small but fine. Our room #303 right on the front had a superb view. It was no smaller than other rooms we've had elsewhere with no view. The balcony had 2 chairs and a table and was very comfortable to sit and watch the boat dock landings (too hot midday) or just watch people on the promenade below. Our room was always cleaned with fresh towels and I think clean sheets a couple of times (4 night stay). One amazing thing was the small, small bathroom (overweight travelers please note) though the shower was really OK and the lake view from the window above the washbasin was lovely. Probably in earlier years there was no "ensuite" so this was added to accommodate.
For those who want any luxury they will have to pay more but cannot find a better view with a location in the center of everything. Near several restaurants, the tourist office, boat dock and bus stops for north/south buses Brescia to Riva del Garda and way points. The breakfast was quite good by Italian standards with juice and coffee machines plus cold meats, cheese, pastries, yogurt, cereals, etc., certainly enough. At check-in we were given a 10% discount ticket for their restaurant or the one just beyond on the square where we ate 3 times as the food was quite good and reasonably priced and we could sit outside on their terrace. A caraffe of house wine was priced OK as well.
In other words we"d stay there again definitely. We recommend it to those who want a perfect view and a plain, no frills, clean room and won't be shocked by a very small bathroom.

Room Tip: Front room #303, gorgeous view but very small bathroom!

Hotel du lac is situated on the water front of garda lake , in the beautiful gardone riviers promenade. You can't take this advantage from it...
Rooms are VERY small , the bathroom is the smallest we've ever been in....
You can't even strtch your hands to use the towels....
It was clean, service was OK , but the whole atmosphere- Spartan.

Room Tip: Try to get rooms with view to the lake.

we stayed 5 nights in sept 12 half board,
room was a little small and bathroom very small but we had a balcony and a lake view
breakfast was good but evening meal very odd.
all meals were chosen the day before from a choice of two.
we could have spaghetti as a first course followed by a plate of dried beef, thinly
sliced but nothing else and then egg custard.
we were segregated from the none staying customers who could dine alfresco and along the front of the hotel as we had to stay in the dining room at the rear
the staff although pleasant enough had very little interest in their customers, they should all visit germany and see how it should be done
hotel in a lovely spot right on the side of the lake but would not stay there again

If driving, turn in at Grand Hotel and there is one reserved space for dropping off/pickup.

Room was big, twin beds pushed together to make a large double.

En-suit shower room in room very small, you would struggle to swing a mouse never mind a cat.

Small balcony with chairs over look the lake, other lake rooms below had tables (we were on third floor).

Arrived very late at night, notified staff we would be late, had to hand over passport, but got back in morning when system was working.

Decor pleasant enough, lift and stairs to take you up. Breakfast standard cheese, meat, bread, cereal, coffee, teas. Fruit in syrup from tin, fruit juice diluted rather than fresh. Breakfast always the same everyday, sometimes the tarts change.

If your room has air conditioning you WILL need to ask for it to be switched on, as they only put it on at certain times of the year and only if you ask/complain.

The maids start at about 8am every morning, there are two for the whole hotel, they will unlock your door without knocking, and if you ask them to come back, don't expect it to be that day. They seem to start at the top of the hotel and work down.

The restaurant won't let you charge to your room, unless you tell them first, and settle up as soon as possible.

For a better dinning experience, head across to Emiliano's directly across from the front entrance, better food, service and price.

Room Tip: When booking ensure you have booked a lake view room
