It was my first visit to Lake Garda and I have to say that is one if the most beautiful places I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. A crowd of us were staying at Gardone Riviera as my niece had chosen it for her dream wedding which it certainly was.
I wanted to start this review with a positive hence the above paragraph. Sadly the same cannot be said of the Hotel Du Lac. Firstly it is in dire need of some TLC - the public areas are dingy and not that welcoming. The rooms are positively antiquated - ours was long and narrow and about 90 degrees. We struggled to get the aircon to work and when it didn't I went down to reception to complain only to find that you have to ask for it to be switched in from reception. The bathroom was something else - again long and narrow and exceptionally hot as there is no aircon in there at all. The shower was a total joke - it was a fixed overhead unit with a head that was not adjustable or moveable. When you opened the door and turned on the water the spray came straight out sideways thus soaking the entire room - standing underneath it you could remain totally dry as no water came out of the middle. I ended up washing my hair on the day of the wedding in the sink!! Oh and the hair dryer in the bathroom failed to work and I had to ask 3 times before they loaned me a replacement. However, on the plus side the room was very clean, the bed linen was beautifully fresh every day and we were given plenty of nice fluffy white towels if only we could have got wet enough to use them !! We also had a lake view and that we certainly couldn't complain about. The Du Lac is also in a superb position being virtually opposite the quay where the boats all arrive.
Breakfast at the Du Lac is not the best either and despite there being a vast area outside the dining area, you are forbidden from taking any breakfast items outside to consume which is a great pity given the stunning location. Please also take note of the fact that if you miss breakfast it is virtually impossible to get anything to eat breakfast wise anywhere along Gardone Riviera. I think there is a definite resistance on the part of the Italians not to allow the Lake to become anglicised in any way by serving English breakfasts and the usual tacky stuff which no one could blame them for - I certainly don't, but just remember not to miss your hotel breakfast however unexciting it may be because you won't get another chance.
My feeling is that with a bit of modernisation ie new bathrooms and decoration in the rooms, the Du Lac could be a superb little hotel - it just needs a bit of money spent on it. Please don't let this put you off going to Gardone Riviera because it is truly stunning and there are plenty of other great hotels along the front to choose from. Others from our wedding party stayed in some really nice hotels so do your homework and you'll have a superb holiday in this gem of a location.
