“nothing going on in Gardone”
Reviewed 9 June 2008

Having visited Italy many times and lakes Como and Maggiore the previous 2 years , we were keen to see what Garda had to offer. unfortunately we hit a bad weather week , it rained continually for the first 3 days and the best way of dealing with this is to take the boat to visit the other resorts on Garda - particularly recommend Sirmione , Malcesine , Limone and Salo. Gardone Riviera is very limited - very few shops (from a time warp in the 50's) handful of virtually empty restaurants. Fortunately , the neighbouring resort of Salo (easily reached in 10 mins by bus or boat) had much more to offer. Hotel Villa Sofia is a lovely hotel in beautiful surroundings but is located up quite a steep hill (my relatively fit 73 yr old mother really struggled) and the other part of Gardone (upper Gardone) was only accesible by another steep climb. The hotel would benefit by having a courtesy minibus as we saw in other hotels/resorts. The hotel is furnished to a high standard and immaculately clean and fortunately almost empty when we stayed as the walls are very thin and you can hear everything going on next door (bedroom & bathroom !) breakfast was an excellent buffet with plenty of choice , including bacon/eggs if you wanted. Villa Sofia does not do evening meal but the staff will recommend local places to eat in both upper and lower Gardone - sadly involving a hike up the hill whichever part you choose! Overall we enjoyed our week (despite the weather) but would not choose this resort again. Also , the boat Summer timetable did not start until the week after which meant the earliest boat out was 10.22 and the last boats back were around 18.00 which proved a bit limiting.

Myself and my partner stayed in this hotel in August/September 2007 for 2 weeks. Although the hotel is up a steep hill it is in a great location because you can walk to lower Gardone (the main town) or, behind the hotel you can walk up another steep hill to Upper Gardone. Don't be put off by the climb, it is really worth it. The hotel has the advantage of being in a quiet area but only 5 minutes from restaurants and bars and the ferry port. It is a relatively small hotel and most of the rooms have some view of the lake unless you are at the back, in which case you will be facing the road. We did not request a lake view room as they were a bit more expensive but our room did face the lake and had a quite good view of it. The room was lovely, very big, and had a balcony that you could sit out on. The room was clean and kept that way with a maid service every day. The bathroom was lovely and had all the usuals. The only thing I would say is that the walls seem to be paper thin; we could hear everything in the rooms next door (and I mean EVERYTHING!). The hotel only does breakfast and a limited lunch but both were nice. The breakfast is buffet style and there is plenty to eat but don't expect a full Irish breakfast, the style is obviously continental. The hotel staff were all really nice and made the stay very pleasant. The pool is grand, not very big but big enough. It was hard to find places to sit out on some days though because of the early risers! It is not exactly a young and lively resort so don't expect that kind of holiday. We found it relaxing and quiet and never felt rushed, so if you love that kind of holiday you will love this hotel. There are great restaurants in the area as well, especially in Upper Gardone. The best being 'Ulivi' opposite the Vittoriale (does great pizzas and everything else), and 'Angeli' (could have spelt that wrongly), on the left as you head up to the Vittoriale. It is small and can only be booked in advance but believe me it is worth it for the atmosphere alone!
Overall a very enjoyable hotel and we would recommend the hotel anyone staying in the area.

The hotel is nicely located, not too far from the lake, restaurants.
It was really quiet, which is a positive.
The staff were friendly and helpful.
Not a very big area for sun bathing and people put towels out and left them there all day!! Same as everywhere else i guess!
Our room was above the reception so the view was not great but some of the rooms must have had stunning views!!! was jealous of that!
The hotel room was good, clean and enough.
Restaurants and boat trips nearby.
Enjoyable time and pretty place.

Great hotel in Gardone. A small hotel, very nice rooms with view to the lake.
The rooms are new.
the atmosphere is friendly and the staff is very welcoming and happy to assist. It is in a very quiet location on the hill above the gardone riviera.
It has a nice pool, nice garden.
They don't have in-house restaurant for lunch or dinner yet they will recommend you for nice pizzeria or an excellent restaurant near by.
highly recommended.
