We stayed here for 5 nights and had big rooms with a wonderful view of the ocean. The staff was helpful and friendly. The food at the restaurant was very good. The bedsheets were starched or new and stiff as paper, but softened up after a night of use. The only thing I missed was wifi in the room, it was only available in the lobby.
The hotel is a little far from the restaurants and shops.

Room tip: Ask for a room with a view.

Our second hotel was in Giardini Naxos at the base of Taormina. It was Arathena Rocks. The hotel has two great views, one of the sea in front of the hotel & the second to the left of Taormina & Castelmola above it. The rooms were clean and spacious with a balcony outside. It is decorated with lots of antiques that gives it an eclectic quality. We had dinners here 3 nights(one night on the town for pizza) all were well done as was breakfast which offered fried eggs & bacon. Since it was the beginning of the season & a little cool no one used the pool but it was open. It is located within walking distance of the Lungomare of Giardini with it's many ristoranti, pizzarie & gelaterie. I recommend this hotel and will use it again for my next tour.

This is a hotel with an enviable location, situated as it is at the end of a quiet, private road next to lava-formed rocks and the sea. Its antiquated Sicilian-style decor and furniture downstairs in the lounge and reception areas adds charm, and the sunny breakfast room has a great view across the sea.

The bedroom, which had noisy and fairly ineffective air-con but was clean and spacious, contained similar decor which, despite the bathroom's rather bizarre ornate wooden wall candelabra and garish rustic flowery wall tiles, actually felt homely rather than anything else. It did, however, suffer a bit from chipped paint and patchy DIY work here and there - especially in the bathroom and balcony area. The shower head leaked and fired water everywhere at the start, but this was fixed swiftly and without fuss. Less forgivable perhaps was the lack of English-speaking TV channels. Whilst I don't go on holiday to watch TV all day, I do like to keep at least vaguely abreast of the news, so it was startling to find a hotel with plenty of non-Italian guests which offered only trashy reality shows on MTV in English.

Breakfast was disappointing. The general layout of the buffet led to congestion even when there weren't that many people in, and I agree with other reviewers' comments about the machine-stewed coffee and fruit juices, which were both surprisingly grim, and grumpy waiting staff. If you were brave enough to try the cereals, it was like chewing on cardboard, but the pastries were good, as was the choice of cold meats and cheeses. The dinner menu was a set one, so we opted to eat elsewhere.

One thing I would add generally is that despite nearly hitting 40 years old, we both still felt pretty young compared to many of the other guests, especially when the coach parties descended. Whilst this didn't particularly bother us (as I said, we felt young), it might put some of you off.

So perhaps after all that, it might seem surprising for me to say that we did actually enjoy our stay overall, but my overwhelming impression of the hotel was that of faded glory, and certainly somewhere which is no more than three-star standard.

Have not been to The Arathena since the birth of our grandchildren. Just booked to return in June 2014. It will be like visiting family can't wait. Looking forward to a complete holiday of pampering in a lovely part of the world.

Room tip: Have a sea view and watch the sun go down or a country view and hopefully watch Aetna fire up

We are back home in the United States and we feel satisfied with our experience in Giardini. The hotel Arathena is magnificent, located in a very picturesque part of Naxos. It is beautiful. We called it "un angolo di paradiso" and paradise it is. It is where nature, Etna's lava rocks, meet the ocean and where, in times past, the eruptions from the volcano and the flow of lava created incredible contrast. Clear, pure ocean water was left to go back and forth as the ocean tried to restore the original shore line. Later on, in modern times, man made his own contribution by building on the rocks left by the lava flow. It is fantastic and incredible. The hotel Arathena is truly a corner of paradise and we were there. This modern hotel is beautiful in every sense. It is serviced by the most cooperative staff, who are always obliging, and is managed by the most efficient, caring and courteous person, Manuela, who treated us with respect and kindness. We appreciate and always remember her. The food and the service were excellent and we recommend this hotel highly and will definitely return again to enjoy this "angolo di paradiso".
