“Excellent Hotel but Reception Staff need overhaul”
Reviewed 11 August 2014

This is my fourth visit to Hellenia Yachting. I love the hotel, the setting and I cannot praise the staff in the restaurant enough i.e. Francesco, etc and also the staff at the Pool Bar - they are helpful, friendly and cannot do enough for you. The staff on reception leave a lot to be desired - as one of the other trip advisor's reviews mentioned the young Blond women was most unhelpful and rude when I queried about renting a sun bed! The two younger women were new as I had not seen them before and were much nicer and did their best. I did find the older lady very nice and helpful too! Having said that it's not good enough - and if the staff on reception were half as nice and friendly as in the rest of the hotel, I would find the hotel faultless. I will be going back again next year as I love the food, weather, the location etc.

A lovely older style hotel in a beautiful location with a comfortable room overlooking the sea with superb views. The room was tired but claen and the chamber maid did her best to make it as comfortable as possible.
The private beach infront of the hotel was clean with good quality sun beds and towels provided at 14 euros per day.The breakfasts were of a good quality with an excellent variety of food, the weekly evening buffet was superb with an excellent choice of food on offer.
However the massive let down of the whole holiday were the reception staff (with the noteable exception of the two very young girl and boy who tried their best but were clearly terrified of the dragons in charge). Main reception staff were totally disinterested and bordering on rude, especially the young blonde woman and the much older lady, both of whom were especially unpleasant and all were loathed to show any interest in their job and really spoilt what could be a wonderful hotel. Reception is the 'shop window' of any such hotel - the first and last impression that any guest has of the establishment. These people are not real hotel reception/concierge material, rather the level of low grade supermarket check out staff. WAKE UP MANAGEMENT and recruit some decent, trained reception staff and a proper Conceierge service, all of whom could then welcome your guests and make them feel really special. You would then attract good quality guests who will be loyal visitors for years to come.
A BEAUTIFUL OLD HOTEL IN A FANTASTIC POSITION NEEDS SOME UPGRADING but in urgent need of a complete overhaul of reception staff.

Stayed here for a week at beginning of July. Beautiful hotel, lovely location and really nice room overlooking pool and beach.
However the staff, particularly on Reception, were very poor and loathe to make much effort with any queries or requests. Come the end of the week we had reached the stage where we couldn't be bothered using their services much at all. When they look blankly at you for the umpteenth time when you ask for towels (for pool) you get a bit worn down. We got the impression it was a hotel largely used by Italians. My son needed a Dr whilst we stayed there and latter wanted a presciption dispensed immediately. The girl on Reception had difficulty with our enquiry as to nearest Pharmacist and went to serve someone else before referring our question. On the last evening my son had light meal and I pointed out I would not be paying full price of a dinner or we would eat elsewhere. I was assured I would only be charged nominal price. Upon checking out I noticed we had been charged for a full 3 course meal for him. Sadly the man on Reception was very reluctant to alter this and I had to go and find Restaurant Manager and insist he intercede on our behalf. Left a sour taste.
The only staff we found truly pleasant and efficient were the pool bar staff who were excellent.

To get the negatives out of the way first.
No air conditioning in our part of the hotel for six of 12 nights (working now) and this will be addressed with the travel company. Sun beds with umbrellas overlooking the sea are tatty and need replacing.
The good....Food in the restaurant was varied and tasty fish, veal, rabbit lamb were some of the choices, various pastas and risottos and of course deserts. Good selection of wines all of which were reasonably priced for a hotel. Staff were friendly and professional, especially Francesco and Mario. Pool side bar was good value and again the staff were friendly and efficient. Rooms were clean and spacious, we had a deluxe room overlooking the sea (235). Really talented pianist/musician who is in nightly residency. The poolside buffet on Friday evening was superb. Breakfast was more than adequate, cereals, fruit, cold meats, cheeses and eggs and bacon if that is your irk! plenty of cakes and spreads etc.
Some very good pizzerias and restaurants nearby for lunches or evening meals (to many good choices to recommend just one) all reasonably priced. The sea is beautiful clean and clear, it does drop off quickly about 2m deep 4m out. Buses to Taormina leave every 30 mins from across the road and set you back €3 rtn. Having stayed in various hotels in Giardini and Taormina the Hellenia is certainly good value.

20/27.06.2014. 4* Hellenia Hotel.Giardini Naxos. Absolutely FABULOUS!!!! Inside & outside. Designed to make you feel like a countess (contessina) in a "palazzo vecchio". Room spacious & spotless. Impressive view : had morning coffee with my friend (mio amico), Mt. Etna, on the terrace. (Room was upgraded, even before getting there!) Sea: crystal-clear! Staff: EXCELLENT! Sara & Giovanni & Luca. To name a few.
4* Hellenia Hotel.Giardini Naxos. IT IS : ' as 'seen on tv' and a lot more.

Hopefully, I'll come back someday. "Cause I REALLY LOVED IT :-))

Room Tip: My room # 410 was excellent. With a view from the terrace to Mt. Etna - had morning cofee together...

We were upgraded to a 5th floor room. Plenty of space - as well as a double bed a sofa and chair. Large balcony shared with next door (plants sectioned it off) Big enough for 2 sunloungers and table & 2 chairs. Only stayed B&B - breakfasts had plenty of different things to choose from including fresh fruit salad & hot eggs & bacon, all buffet style. Reception didn't pass on information from our travel rep for 2 days - otherwise would have had 5 stars. Balconies far better in this hotel than the Hilton next door. Both in very good position. Supermarket a short walk to the left and the bus stop to the right. Also pleasant easy walk round harbour area from here.

Room Tip: Choose a room as high as possible - if you don't mind a few stairs to get there - the views are...

This hotel, built in 1975, is unrealistically marketed as a 4 star and proved a disappointment from day one. When we arrived we were given an upgrade to a large 3 room suite which whilst initially looked good turned out to be poor. The furniture was very old fashioned even by Italian standards and in poor repair. The room became unusable when we attempted to use the shower. This comprised of a large Jacuzzi that appeared to have last worked in the mid 1980s and had a shower attachment. As the floor of the Jacuzzi sloped it was impossible to take a stand up shower. We changed room.
The second smaller room was slightly more modern than the suite, however, it still needed a total refurbishment. We did accept the room as it had a more useable shower. How wrong we were. This shower leaked so as to flood the whole entrance hall area and we only managed to control the flooding with the help of cleaning staff who provided extra towels which were rammed into vital corners stopping the flood. This shower also comprised of a bath size Jacuzzi which was also not working. As these units were not designed to be used as stand up showers the floors showed signs of excessive flexing due to their continuous use as stand up showers. To add to our misery we had two occasions when the hot water went off in mid shower. Luckily my wife was using the shower on both occasions thereby sparing me from the cold shower ordeal.
The dining experience didn't prove much better. Having looked at dining experiences of others prior to booking we decided on breakfast only and made our own arrangements for other meals. How right we were. On one occasion the restaurant ran out of coffee cups and we were asked to use small double handed soup bowls. The automated self service hot drinks machines needed continuous attention by staff and it was difficult to see how they fitted in to the hotels 4 star strategy. We were in luck that we found a small family run restaurant called "Sire" which was approximately 100 metres to the right as you exited the hotel. As this restaurant has recently been taken over by the family it is not, as yet, listed on Tripadvisor but is well worth a visit.
The hotel had other niggling problems of noise. People dragging chairs on the hard floor above combined with the closing of heavy window and door roller shutters added to a general low level annoyance. One day the hotel hosted a wedding which resulted in shouting and general noise in the pool area to well after 1am. To add to the dissatisfaction using the hotel beach umbrella came at an additional 14 euro a day cost.
However, there were some good aspects. The staff, both reception and cleaning staff were extremely nice and helpful. The location of the hotel was in a beautiful spot with uninterrupted views of the Mediterranean in the rear and Mount Etna in the front. One of the better aspects was the free WiFi which had total coverage of all areas including inside rooms.
Our disappointment continued with the service offered by our Prestige Holidays representative. Our contact Maxine failed to make contact as stated in her contact letter and later arranged to meet in a local bar the following day. The only information we required was the pickup arrangements which she failed to provide on 4 occasions. This single factor caused more underlining stress than the poor hotel room. It appeared that our representative was more keen on letting people know it was she who recommended us to the various places she told us about.
I would not use this hotel or travel company on future occasions
