“Nice hotel”
Reviewed 9 April 2013

We spent a week at Hotel La Chance and generally enjoyed it. Service is pretty good but could be a bit friendlier. On our day of arrival we missed the last gondola from Aosta and the receptionist kindly arranged a taxi to pick us up.

Try to get a bedroom that overlooks the valley rather than the road. The rooms are a bit small and basic with hard beds, limited storage space, no full length mirror, etc. Bathrooms are equally small with no bath to soak in after a hard day on the slopes! There is however & decent spa area in the hotel which, bizarrely, is free to use before 4pm only. Not exactly customer-centric. It's a nice addition, though, and the treatments are well-priced and pretty good. There is also a really nice lounge area with a roaring fire.

Breakfast was ok, not great. Trying to get a hot cup of coffee or tea was a challenge each morning. The aperitivi were tasty & plentiful each evening (apart from Sunday) - usually made with the leftover ingredients from the previous evening's meal. The 4 course dinners were generally ok - with dishes varying from amazing to dreadful over the course of the week. On my birthday the staff kindly presented me with a cake which was a lovely touch.

Pila is a cracking little ski resort. It's well worth a visit and staying at Hotel La Chance is a good option.

Repeat review as previous rating not accurate. Had really lovely week at La Chance. Very relaxing and everyone made you feel welcome. . Hotel staff were very attentive and helpful. Rooms were very comfortable and the lobby and lounge had very relaxing atmosphere. Spa was most welcome and very professionally presented. Would definitely go again!

Room Tip: Ask for room at back with lovely mountain views

Once we finally found the hotel (much easier said than done since both the road sign and the hotel sign are almost invisible - when you reach the "Welcome to Pila" sign take the 2nd road and up the steep hill) we had a wonderful stay. This hotel with its amazing views has both ambitions and a service level far beyond their current three stars. The rooms are modern, comfortable and spacious. The breakfast lacks nothing and is amongst the best we have had in any alp hotel. Every day a four course dinner is served at a very reasonable price. It should be noted that, as in most of Italy, dinner times in Pila are not set with children in mind - everything is closed until 1930. La Chance mitigates this a bit by serving some complementary small dishes in the bar by the fireplace during the afternoon and early evenings.
Not much to do in Pila, apart from skiing - which is great for most skiers. No queues takes you up to plenty slopes, the majority red to light red/blue, but also with a few more challenging ones. Ideal for families - a mystery that only domestic tourists have found it yet!
Now, with a multiday pass you have one day at another Aosta resort included in the price so if you want to try something else then Courmayeur, La Thuile, Cervinia/Zermatt and Monte Rosa (Champoluc) are only some hairpin bends away;-)
The hotel has a nice spa which is complementary to the guests before 16 - however children are not allowed.
The challenge with recommending La Chance is that it may be fully booked when we want to return...

We stayed in La Chance over half term, February 2013, as part of an Interski package tour. This being our first package tour in probably close on 20 years, we were nervous about quality and facilities, especially as our ski mad children (12 and 15) have (perhaps unreasonable) expectations!

Our fears were laid aside almost as soon as we arrived. The whole Interski experience I'll write separately about but suffice for here to say that we were really well looked after and are about to book again.

The hotel is clearly a recent conversion (I think from a builiding and barn) and as such it will be an ongoing project for some time with some small jobs needing attending to. The rooms we had were very good. the kids shared a large room with twin beds. Our room (400) was MASSIVE! We had a double bed, sofa bed, sofa, more furniture than you could shake a stick at.

Best part was that the room had velux windows and allowed you to wake up in time with the sun. (Not perhaps ideal always but we loved it).

The hotel bar is well equipped and has great staff. Cocktails are never a problem and from around 6:30pm or so a selection of delicious nibbles is laid out.

The restaurant is large and places you at the same table each day. Our table was fine but I'm sure we could have asked to move if necessary. The food is from a good selection and all good quality and quantity. Try the local red wine "NUS" which is very good.

The spa is wonderful. We made full use of the bubble pool, sauna, steam room, tranquility room and the massage. The last in particular on a ski trip was a god send. The guy who runs the spa and does the massage unfortunately I don't have a name for but he was always friendly, great masseur and very cheerful.

Overall the hotel was just brilliant for us with a few minor quibbles more than offset by the attitude of the staff and owners and the great relaxed atmosphere at all times.

Couple of pictures attached. The second one is the hotel from one of the pistes. It's a long way off but in the centre of the picture and gives an idea of the location within the village.

If you go there to ski, whilst the hotel has a ski room for the equipment a top tip would be to hire a locker at the telecabin station and keep you gear there rather than carry it up and back each day. The telecabin station is at the bottom lift (more or less).

We stayed here on a 3 day ski trip with Interski, the hotel was lovely, nice big clean rooms good sized bathroom, free use of the Spa till 4pm and the evening meals were delicious. The brother and sister couple who run the hotel couldn't have done more for us, Natascia and Jean-Paul are a young couple who obviously try and succeed in making there guests feel welcome.

My husband and I spent a great week here over new year (2013) and I could not recommend this hotel enough. We are a childless couple in our thrities and have high expectations of food, service and general ambience of hotels. I would say this is one of the best ski hotels we have satyed in and we have been skiing for the last 15 years so have lots to compare it too.

The hotel is exactly as the photos on the website suggest and the owners and staff could not have been more friendly, the service was consistently excellent. The rooms and public areas were immaculately clean at all times, the spa was modern and well equipped. The food was consistently good, plenty to choose from each evening from the 4 course menu (included in HB), I work in food and I am very fussy, this food was excellent.

Breakfast is always strange for us Brits in Italy, they traditionally have cakes, biscuits, pastries and this is normally what you get in Italian hotels (we spent 3 months travelling in Italy 2yrs ago) But this was far better than the normal offerings, much more than cakes here, there was always eggs, bacon, cereals, meats, cheese and fresh fruit the only thing I would've liked was some muesli or oats!

There is a walk uphill to the ski lifts, probably 5-10 minutes but quite frankly if you are bothered by a walk uphill then you probably should'nt be skiing. I would say it warms you up nicely! This is the only downside to the hotel and it is definitely worth the effort for the quality of the hotel.

It was a very family friendly resort and the hotel was also very welcoming to families from what we could see, for us with no children that is not always a good thing but it was school holiday time so we were prepared for this.

So all in all I would highly recommend this great hotel, excellent value for money, very well run and a wonderfull place to escape the real world for a week or two! The only thing left to say is STAY HERE!

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back facing the mountains not the village, the view was one of the best I have...

I was fortunate enough to be at HLC for a wedding last July. What a perfect setting! JP, Natasha and Maureen made us all feel at home: the entire party stayed for the week. The food was wonderful, the service impeccable and the location second to none. The rooms were spacious and well appointed, just as charming in the summer as I can imagine them to be in the winter. The rooms share a large balcony which was fab for our group to pop in and out of each others room, we may have locked ourselves out a few times though! Reasonable prices and a great wine selection - we sampled most. From the shared balcony you could see Mont Blanc and Monte Rosa, from the lawn you could see these two as well as the Matterhorn. Mind-blowingly beautiful Can't recommend this Hotel enough.

Room Tip: Try and request a room facing Mont Blanc
