My wife and three friends visited the hotel earlier this month. We were a tad bit apprehensive about the stay, due to the somewhat negative views expressed by other visitors. When we arrived, we could not have been more pleased. The staff was more than pleasant and accommodating. The rooms were more than adequate, the restaurant served a wonderful dinner as well as a superb breakfast.

We will definitely recommend this hotel.

They don't speak that mush English and aren't that keen to try it either. The room standard is simple but clean, the sea view are very beautiful but there are no terrace where you can enjoy it from.

The breakfast is OK, but again the service aren't that good, our waiter was a bit arrogant but if you know Italian he would probably lighten up.

I stayed at the Castello Monticello in August 2007, peak season on Giglio. I was very lucky and grateful to find a room at the last minute, although maybe that should have told me something...

The hotel is located on the road between the Port (2km) and the Castello (4km), with another 4 km to Campese beach. There is literally nothing around (except for a small gas station), so if you don't have a car you have to rely on the bus service (tickets cannot be bought on board) to get to the many great restauants in the Port or Campese. In retrospect, it would have been much better to stay at Campese (great beach) or the Port (lively night scene with lots more restaurant choice)

My room, which was a single, was quite small - I had to open my case on the bed as there was not enough room on the floor. The room was clean and simply furnished (the tv, which was miniscule, was one of those basic ones with only 4 buttons, and at least half of the tv stations had not been tuned properly). The bathroom was also tiny (basically a shower stall with toilet and basin, so nearly everything gets wet when you shower) but clean.

Apart from breakfeast I didnt eat there so cannot comment on the restaurant - although I would be very surprised if it matched the great standards found elsewhere on the island. Breakfast was quite strange... when I entered the nearly deserted dining room there were no hotel staff around, but as soon as I took a seat 2 people appeared to tell me I was sitting in the wrong place, and I was escorted to a table with a view of the fruit juice vending machine. I assume most people stay for a week on full board and are assigned their table for the week. It just seemed very regimented and unnecessary.

I was particularly taken with how unsmiling all the staff seemed to be. I appreciate it was a busy time for the hotel, but a smile doesnt cost anything. Not quite Faulty Towers standard of guest relations, but getting there. My travelling companion found a room at the Hotel Campese, and when I went to meet her each morning the people at that hotel were much friendlier and accommodating to me (even giving me free coffee and magazines to read while I was waiting), and I wasnt even staying there.

Giglio is a great island, and you are not likely to spend much time in your room anyway. Overall, this hotel is not a terrible option, but having regard to location, facilities and service, you can easily do much much better on giglio. I was only there for 2 night, and the only time I spent there was to sleep, but I think I would have found it very very depressing if I had stayed longer. Next time I will book ahead and get a place at Campese.
