Upon arrival, we were greeted with smiles and Maria who spoke different languages. For a small hotel that was owned and operated by mother Carmen and her two daughters, Sabrena and Pierangela, it has been thoughtfully put together, and the rooms were clean and modern. The breakfast was always full, with a lot of variations (fruit, pastries, cooked food) and Carmen always had time to make one of our boys hot chocolate every morning. We felt like part of their family. They recommended great restaurants in Chivari and Blackboard. My friends son asked asked if they could bring his mother breakfast in bed for her birthday mothers and they accommodated.

We were specifically looking for a hotel that was close to the beach and had a pool and we were initially concerned that there are no images of what the spa looked. We were very surprised. The Spa was in the middle of the Marina, very modern with gym, sauna, bar area and plenty of sun lounging space around the pool. Aqua aerobics also enticed our 14 years. Alexandro and his staff looked after all the needs and also helped organize a drink surprise for my friends birthday on the last evening, nothing seemed too much trouble. The beach is a 5 minute walk through the Marina and so is town centre of Lavagna which is very pretty.

Almost want to keep it a secret! Would definitely go back again.

We (couple + son) stayed 7 days in this hotel and all agree that it is perfect because of its location, cleanliness and the very friendly and helpful staff ... and not to forget the excellent breakfast with a variety of homemade cakes. Of course Lavagna has not the same touristic attractions as neighboring towns like Santa Margherita or Sestri Levante. However, we found it very Italian and unspoiled. The hotel itself is located a 5 min walk from the center with a few very nice restaurants and the railway station.

Previous reviews mention the slow internet connection. It is true that in our room I was not able to connect to the intranet of my company and to a few other locations outside Italy. However, you can get a high quality connection in the hotel lobby. To my astonishment, we were able to use skype, facebook and even to watch videos with the WiFi connection in our room.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the harbor are quieter.

3-star hotel well proportionate to expectations, absolutely functional. This family-run hotel is nice and the staff is very kind.
Rooms (ours was a double standard, overlooking via dei Devoto) have more or less everything you need, except the minibar (I would say ok for lighting, mirrors, power sockets, air conditioning, wardrobe, stand for suitcases, etc.) and are more than liveable; the bathroom is very small but this is adequately equipped (including a small window overlooking the internal courtyard, definitely preferable to the noisy and often inefficient extractors), maybe they could 'steal' a little space to the sleeping area to have a bigger bathroom.
Our room was overall clean and there was no bad smell, the cleaning service has been carried out regularly every day, with fresh towels (if required) and supply of complimentary stuff in the bathroom; there was wooden floor, and we were glad of it since in other hotels we had bad experiences with dusty or stinky carpeting.
Our room was on the 4th floor, so we used the elevator; I'm sorry to report that in the elevator there was a bad smell, maybe coming from the carpeting on the walls.
The breakfast buffet has a good selection although it is oriented to early riser guests: buffet breakfast in the breakfast room until 9.30, then there's a cafeteria service at the small hotel's bar. Indeed next to the breakfast room there is a small bar/cafeteria with sofas and tables, and it overlooks a small garden also equipped with chairs and tables.
Lavagna train station can be reached by foot in less than 10 minutes, but sore note for the proximity to the railway line: the continuous passages of trains are at risk of disturbing your sleep (it was not our case, anyway).
For those traveling with their own car I report that it is not easy to find parking nearby, you need some luck, but the hotel is in agreement with the private parking of the nearby marina, and it is charged a fee of 10 euro per night.

This was a last minute online booking. After 4 days of driving and site seeing in Rome and Florence. I wanted a nice sea side hotel to relax in. The front desk were super friendly and accomodating. There is free street parking and a private parking garage is only a stone throw away. We had an upperfloor beach and marina view room . Breakfast was included and had eggs, bacon, cold meats , plenty of pastries, cereals etc. We opted to eat at the hotel for dinner . The food was outstanding!
Nice private balcony.
As others have noted the staff are super friendly and went above and beyond to ensure we had a pleasant stay.

Room Tip: Get a higher floor Marina/Beach view if available.

We stayed a few days in this hotel with our 3 year old twins while sailing a race out of Lavagna Harbor. The hotel team went out of their way to take care of us, bought us milk and chocolate powder for the kids. The hotel is clean, renovated, ideally located if you want to be close to the harbor.

In July 2011 we planned a boating holiday in Italy. The first week we stayed at the Garda Lake up north and for the second week we moved a bit south towards the Portofino / Sestri Levante-area. When searching online for a hotel we soon discovered that the hotels in both of those cities became extremely pricey compared with some years ago. So we searched for an alternative, holding in account that we needed a berth for our boat.

Trough Booking.com we stumbled upon Ancora Riviera and were almost immediately convinced when we saw that the hotel was just next to the marina. We booked 2 Superior rooms, because of the ocean-view. After we had arrived we were glad we did that. Although the "classic" rooms also looked very modern, clean (certainly for Italy ... no offense) and comfortable they were at the front of the hotel with not much of a view (just some old, dirty buildings) and a busy train track not far away. Also, Lavagna itself is not that beautiful. It is just a normal Italian seaside city but it is a perfect fall-out to Portofino, Sestri Levante and Rapalo (also, a day-excursion to Milan is very doable)

Our rooms were at the back, had all a balcony, sea-view, a nice tv (with sadly only Italian channels; around 50 of them), a desk, a little sofa, a hairdryer, shower, bidet and offcourse a toilet. We also didn't hear any train-like noises.

When going to the breakfast you will notice that this is a typical Italian hotel because around 70% of the other guests is also Italian. But nevertheless the breakfast is a very nice assortment of different kinds of break, cheeses and meat. But the pièce de résistance must be the whole table full of fresh baked cake and pastry. Absolutely delicious ...

And when this hasn't convinced you yet, the staff certainly will. The Hotel is ran by 2 sisters and their mother. Only one of them speaks English but they all are extremely friendly and helpful. Also the night watchman, Roberto, is one of the friendliest Italian we have ever met. He can tell incredibly stories about the celebrities in Portofino but can also be of a very great help when planning excursions.

All in all a very nice hotel we will most certainly return to in the future.
