A good example of Baroque architecture, particularly in the interior. Unfortunately the exterior is undergoing restoration currently and is therefore partly obscured by scaffolding. The papier mache statuettes are well worth seeing.

We aproached it from the main square by walking down a beautiful path/street. Very easily accessible from other landmarks and other cafes nearby. Thankfully, we were able to venture inside to which the architecture was stunning and very well maintained considering the age of some of these buildings. Definately have to head over there tonight to see it in the dark, hopefully all lit up. All in all, a fabulous structure.

This and many of the other numerous churches in the centre of Lecce are ornately designed both on the external façade and inside. Lecce is worth visit just to see these churches which have been carved out of soft stone which hardens with age. The result is churches with ornate and intricate carvings on their altars and a range of delicate and flowing designs on their pillars. Many of the churches also contain religious figures made out of papier mache (which was invented in Lecce). Additionally, many church ceilings are brightly decorated. Together with large religious paintings, these combine to produce an overall experience which is stunning and takes your breath away. The effect is opulence to an extent that some people may think is over-the-top.

The Basilica di Santa Croce,(begun in1353 and completed only in 1695) is a wonderful combination of renessance and baroque art with a richly decorated facade with animals, grotesque figures and vegetables and a large rose window.
