We do not eat meat. We ordered the Mama Lupa antipasti for two which had 5 dishes. The Chinese cabbage was overcooked but that is the Puglian way. If you are expecting Chinese cabbage cooked in Chinese way, don't go to a Puliangese restaurant. The chickpea with barley was simple but tasty, the mushroom dish was complex and superb. The roasted pepper cooked with olives and tomatoes was excellent to spread on wonderful bread and the grilled, marinated eggplant was wonderful as well. For 10 Euro it was enough for our lunch. But we also ordered one second plati: baked potatoes with artichoke. It was very tasty but it was mostly potato with a few artichoke and hence I will not give them 5 stars. Service was excellent. They were so polite, smiling and happy. The added bonus was the fact that our parking meter was about to expire in 80 minutes. They were open at 12 PM. Food came fast.

On a cool Monday evening, scarcely any restaurants seemed to be open in Lecce, so with some misgivings, we squeezed into the crowded Trattoria Mamma Lupa, for what turned out to be an unassuming but great-value meal. The mixed antipasti comprised vegetables that had more flavour than those in other, more up-market places, as was the case with the grilled meat. The genre is rustic, so presentation is not a strong point (starting with the menu), and the chipped and cracked earthenware beakers maybe need replacing - though the wine was more than decent. The staff seemed distracted, but were very friendly once you got their attention. Other places have more charm, comfort and ambiance; but we returned to Mamma Lupa because it has better food.

We had a great lunch at Mamma Lupa; the Mamma Lupa on the menu is 5 vegetables cooked in different ways - just 10 euros for a good lunch for two. The vegetables change by the season but we ate vegetables that we had never previously tasted. The cover charge includes bread, but not just ordinary bread - this is lovely bread cut into chunks, lightly toasted and drizzled with great olive oil.
House wine is served by the jug and ceramic beakers, and I'm sure that the half litre that we ordered magically became much more in the pouring!
It is a very informal place, family run and very popular with locals - just what we were looking for.

That one eats well in Puglia is a fact of life. In some areas, one eats superbly and it is difficult to finger what makes a place outstanding in this regard. Take Mamma Lupa in Lecce for instance - we stumbled on the place rather late one extremely bright and cold afternoon in December, and hopped inside this unassuming place hoping to find something to warm us up. Did we find it? As the Italians say "dieci e lode!" - 10 points and an applause! A small, possibly not more than 25 seat restaurant, run by a husband and wife team, with the aid of a wood fired oven. We discussed; the patron suggested and boy, did we eat! Delightful food, amongst which, possibly one of the very best bistecca fiorentina I ever came across anywhere! All of this accompanied by copious and excellent wine, followed by a complimentary digestivo and coffee. The value for money was incredible - €80 for 4 people for everything - incredible! It is forbidden to even think of such pricing in London - not even allowed to dream about it!! We'll be back for more and soon.

This is one of the few restaurants open for lunch so we gave it a try. We had a seasonal vege plate which was tasteless and overcooked. Also had the vegetable soup which was beans in broth under a layer of olive oil. At 8 euros it was grossly overpriced. Most of the "rustic" clay dishes were cracked and chipped - not healthy!
