“On the right way”
Reviewed 21 April 2014

This was our second stay in the Hotel Hofmatt, and overall it was a positive experience. Our first visit was shortly after the hotel had reopened, and back then it was clear that things were still settling in. This time, it was an uneventful stay, although there is also still opportunity for improvement.

The hotel is located between the Autobahn, a main street, and two train tracks. So, if you intend to escape the noise of the city, this is not the place to go. However, it does also not exceed the average noise level of an inner city hotel, and being only a ten minute train ride away from Basel main station makes it an ideal base for business travellers. The hotel is also situated very close to the river Birs and next to an extensive forest area, which makes it a perfect base for long dog-walks, hiking or biking. Ample parking space is provided.

Our room, a mini suite, was spacious, with okay interior. The beds were a bit small, the artwork nice and the Easter decoration a nice touch. Other than that, it offered the essentials expected in that class, but nothing more. On our wish list would be an additional bin for the main room, an additional mirror in the bathroom, a fridge, and having not to kneel before the Nespresso machine – having one was great, but installing it in the lower board of a cupboard is not the best place. The room as such was clean and orderly, but should have a visit by maintenance soon. The lamp over the door was hanging a bit uneven, the plug behind the TV was half-exiting the wall, having a light switch directly behind the pillow is not the ideal place, and in the bath above the mirror the paint was starting to come off the wall. And of course, the safe should actually work. All minor details, though.

Breakfast was okay. The choice was limited, but what was offered was of good quality and regularly refilled. The fresh juices deserve special mentioning, outstanding is the homemade Bircher Musli – our entire party was looking forward to it, so it was a real disappointment when on the second morning none was offered, because it had not been prepared by the kitchen the evening before. Which was especially disappointing, because in all other matters the restaurant has become a true asset. See also separate review.

The personnel we encountered was friendly, motivated, and helpful and I was able to get hold of someone whenever required. However, what bothered me was the absence of room service and night-watch. Sunday, the restaurant is only opened for breakfast, so you have to go out even for a sandwich or a beer. While the staff deserves a “very good” the huge gaps in service hours brings it down to an average in the service category.

Overall, we had a pleasant stay, with almost all things improving since the last time The staff is motivated and friendly, and things are moving into the right direction. We are looking forward to our next stay.
