“Almost amazing, but DO NOT STAY IN THE RED VILLAS”
Reviewed 2 October 2012

My girlfriend and I stayed here for 10 nights mid September. On the information received here I asked to stay in the Red Villa. Big mistake. The rooms were old, very tatty and just not nice. Still, they charge exactly the same amount as the other, refurbished rooms.

To give them credit, they did move us into the main hotel after we complained twice, which was much nicer. From then on we were happy.

The road noise is not noticeable, and the hotel is much further away from the road than 99% of the other hotels.

The pool is amazing, with the most incredible view. It was cold, but I like the refreshing nature of a cool pool when it is boiling outside.

I would recommend this hotel, but make sure you get a refurbished room.

Room Tip: Do not stay in the Red Villa. Make sure you get a refurbished room

Dear Client,
First we'd like to thank you for your comment on Tripadvisor.
Your opinions are always welcome and we will transmit them to our staff to improve the service and because it is always very helpful to know what our clients think about our hotel.
We always suggested to share with reception any problems in our hotel. We were happy to be able to move you to another room, even if the first room in our “red villa” was requested by you. We are pleased that you were able to enjoy better the rest of your stay after the change of room.
We hope to be able to meet you again during your next trip to Malcesine!

The Hotel itself is beautiful, with fantastic views of the Lake and a fabulous infinity pool. Our room was large and had a good bathroom and balcony. No tea or coffee facilities just a poor fridge with overpriced warm water in it. We soon realised that the busy main road is very close to the hotel and you can always hear it, especially when around the pool area. The photos on the website cleverly hide it! Reception Staff were professional but cold, patronising and not particularly welcoming. Restaurant staff were professional and polite, but not friendly and the food was rushed and a bit pretentious - we had all 4 courses of the set menu in 45minutes. There was no atmosphere in the hotel, no music, and at times felt a bit awkward. The spa looked good but you had to purchase a gown and slippers to enter and it did not seem like they wanted us to go in. It wasn't cheap, would not recommend.

Dear Guest,
Thank you very much for your feedback. We are happy that you found our hotel beautiful and located in a fantastic position.
It’s not use of the hotel Bellevue (as many other hotel in Italy) to have tea or coffee facilities in the room, despite of that our main bar is always open and the pool bar is open from 12 am to 7 pm in high season; in both bar you can enjoy a good Italian espresso on the panoramic terrace!
We are sorry to hear that you minibar was warm, but we always suggest to inform the reception if something in the room is not working, our house keeper is able to fix the most of the problems in the room within few hours.
The evening meal at the Bellevue is for us one of our strengths and we normally receive a lot of compliments for that. At the Bellevue we do our best to create a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere, silence and quite are for us very important. Also we anyway organise (weather permitting) piano bar evening twice per week.
We hope to be able to welcoming you again, in order to let you change your opinion
Best Regards

We stayed in the Red Villa with an excellent view of part of the lake to our right and a red wall to our left, (See photographs) not the full front view we had been led to believe we'd have. The room was comfortable and there was a clean bathroom with an excellent shower.
Breakfasts reflected the customer balance, there were probably more German guests than English but there was fresh fruit available along with a variety of bread (some still warm) and bacon and eggs. Negotiation with the waiters soon established coffee and tea to our liking.
The dinners were superb. Each evening a completely new menu with variety of choice. Lovely breads and salads to take as you like. When choosing a sweet go and have a look at them before ordering. There was a very good selection of wines including many local ones from Bardolino and Valpolicelli.
The dining room has huge patio windows looking out over the lake to the mountains beyond which add a whole new dimension to breakfast. At night there is a pretty lace work of lights on the other side of the lake.
The hotel grounds are delightful with plenty of places to sit and read or just enjoy the spectacular views. The setting for the pool is just stunning but be warned, the water was cool in September!
Malcesine is about a mile away and the best walking route is along the lake side which is just beautiful. Unfortunately access to the lakeside path is across the very busy main road which runs past the Hotel. The nearest crossing point is on a bend and you need to be very careful about watching for traffic. A longer but better option is to turn right out of the rear entrance which takes you down to near a pedestrian crossing. If you do use the shorter route the flight of about a hundred steps from the lake to the road will give you a good appetite on your return!

we have just returned from the bellevue san lorenzo and overall was very pleased. The view is amazing, the location is fantastic. The staff were prepared and made every effort to meet my husbands dietary requirements. The only down side was no room service, or tea/coffee facilities in the room. We got married during our stay, and room service would of been ideal. But overall we were very pleased, and would definatly return. The staff were helpful. The infinity pool was fab too.

Room Tip: we had a lake view room - the view was breathtaking.

Recently returned from an excellent holiday at Hotel Bellevue San Lorenzo. We had a room in the red villa with a small balcony overlooking the lake. As the red villa is one of the older buildings the room was smallish but had everything we needed. It was quaint with patio doors leading onto the balcony. Not a modern hotel room but one with character, with all the facilities required. Good size bathroom with walk in shower and the air con came in useful as it was quite hot most days. The more modern rooms I believe are in the main hotel building but we were happy in the red villa.
The hotel is beautiful. Everywhere you turn there are lovely views, little nooks and crannies and plenty of places to sit and admire the view. There are lots of sunbeds dotted around the plentiful gardens as well as next to the pool. It never felt crowded even though the hotel was full. All hotel staff were friendly and helpful. We saw the manager around the hotel and he seemed fine, just getting on with his job. He made us a cappucino one morning when my husband went into the bar and he was there, no problem.
As for the food, Breakfast was excellent. Something for everyone , cereals, fruit, fresh and tinned. Yogurts, lots of different breads and rolls (very fresh). Cheese, sliced meats, tomatoes.
Cakes, lots of lovely croisants plain or filled with chocolate/jam. Also cooked options, scrambled eggs/fried eggs or boiled i think.
Evening meals also were very good with choices and all freshly made, plenty of local fish and lots of good fresh vegetables. Soups, risotto, local dishes.Deserts were extremely good.
There were two gala dinners in the week we stayed and they were very good, although a lot slower in arriving as everyone was being fed at the same time.
Overall this is a very good hotel in a lovely quiet position about 15 minutes easy walk into Malcesine once you get down onto the lakeside path. Malcesine is indeed a lovely place to spend a holiday, lots to do and we will return to this beautiful town.
Can recommend both the Bellevue and Malcesine for an excellent Italian holiday.

Room Tip: High floors in Red villa have A/C

The hotel had the most fantastic setting the room was basic and clean, The only mirror in the room was in the bathroom, there was very limited storage, the fridge didn't work very well, but the views made up for it. STUNNING. The Breakfast was basic no toast at all, tinned fruit when fresh was growing on the trees in the beautifull gardens but the staff were very friendly and helpfull. The pool was very nice with lots of sun loungers available and the bar service was good value, as was the bar service at night, The barman was very friendly and had good knowledge of the local wines which we really enjoyed. There was plenty of free parking, I would recommend having a car when staying in this hotel the steps down to the lake side are very steep and inpossible at night in the dark to use, leaving busy road to walk along in the dark so driving was a safer option for getting about at night.

Room Tip: The new part of the hotel had better rooms than the old part we were in 308 the old block .

We thank you very much for your feedback, which is very important to better our service. We are pleased that you enjoyed the view for your room in the red villa. As on our website showed, our hotel offers different category/size of room. We’d like also to inform you that we are used to serve on our buffet breakfast fresh fruits and vegetables and our chef prepares delicious mustard and jams for the guests with the fruits growing on our garden, such as a wonderful limoncello with our lemons.
We really hope to be able to welcoming you again soon!

I would rate this hotel as average for a number of reasons.
Our room was in the main part of the hotel costing over €210 per night b/b, it was overlooking the lake with great views, but thats the only positive to be said, small room, very basic furnishing with drab decor, and shared balcony, I'm not convinced the bedding was changed during our weeks stay.
Mini bar only stocked with water. No porter service for baggage on arrival or departure. Receptionists did the very basics, not particularly helpful, I think they must have been to the same "charm school" as the manager, a very surly individual.
Breakfast was very average, tinned fruit, dirty tablecloths, cutlery looked about 40 years old!
We were also told to keep quiet by reception (see post from Bill s) on a couple of occasions mid evening, when we were enjoying a drink on the terrace and in the bar with friends, we are 61 and 58, not 18 year old lager louts!
I should mention Damian, the Bar Manager who was very helpful, friendly and attentive.
When speaking to other guests, there does appear to be a common theme regarding the overbooking of rooms, it seems as though rooms are advertised on sites such as Expedia etc at reduced rates, bookings are then taken but not a deposit, this ensures the hotel is then fully booked. Then when someone books direct with the hotel paying a higher price as we did,the booking is cancelled with Expedia, but not with the customer, hence guests arriving with no rooms available, definitely a shady business practice.
We had arranged a return private taxi transfer from and to the airport, with the hotel "mistakenly" quoting €140 when in fact we had to pay €200!
The hotel is quite a distance from Malcesine, ok to walk along the promenade during the day, if you are able to negotiate the 100 steep steps to the beach, but you either need a car or a taxi at night, €10 by taxi into Malcesine, there only seems to be three taxis in the whole of Malcesine, so they do have a captive market.
All in all a very disappointing visit to the Bellevue San Lorenzo, we will not be returning as there are much better hotels in this area, not recommended.

Thank you for your comments about your stay. We are very sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience in our hotel. As you know, in travelling can happen that bookings differ between hotel and client, above all if you book through Internet. That’s why it’s always a good idea, to confirm bookings directly in advance with reception. Even if there was a problem with your bookings, we’ve done our best to be able to accommodate you, even if it was high season and the hotel was almost fully booked. We just want to underline that we don’t have different prices on different websites, our prices are as showed on our price list; we are very proud to say that the manager is running the hotel Bellevue San Lorenzo since almost 30 years and we rarely experienced overbookings problems or misunderstandings in prices.
We appreciate your lovely thought regarding the view from the room, overlooking the lake; the rooms in the main villa are just renovated with a unique layout and design, in harmony with the age of the historical villa. All of them are finished with a particular attention to every details. It sounds a bit weird , that there was no baggage service; in such a big propriety with different villas, as the hotel Bellevue is, the porter was probably away with other guests. We are also sorry to hear your negative comments about the receptionist; we have a trained and experienced staff (in fact you had nice words for Damiano, the barman, who thanks you a lot), probably the receptionist was just trying to find the better solution for you. Our bar is open until 23.00 outside and until 1.00 inside; we always try to our best to satisfy who likes to rest early in the evening and also who likes to spend some times at the bar with friends; people chatting and laughing together late in the evening can always be loud, even if adults.
We do apologize for the misunderstanding and your disappointment and we are sure that you if you come to visit us again, you will enjoy a lot the Bellevue, as lots of guests make since many years. We hope to see you again.
