Not a lot of Aussies make it so far up lake Garda. Do yourself a favour. The alpine scenery, snow topped mountains, cobbled stone streets, just perfect. Now to hotel Vega. This hotel is in a perfect lake front position, is immaculate, rooms are modern and stylish, there is a spa pool overlooking the lake edge. The breakfast is excellent and most of all Marco is a true gentleman, who is so proud of his hotel and he deserves to be. It is the one to stay at. The web site does not do it justice, you will have to take my word for it!!!

The best hotel in the area, we stayed here for our wedding in the junior suites which are finished to an exceptionally high standard. We were glad to have been half board as the food was amazing, in fact so much so our friends staying in other hotels would join us for dinner as the food was very hard to beat. The location is perfect within close walking distance to the main harbour area but far enough away for peace and quiet. We can not wait to return.

This Hotel has to be one of my most memorable. Its just a shame it is so popular and you have a hard time getting booked in. Our room was lovely we had a side Lake view which take my word for it was just as beautiful a view as a Lake view.. It was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. The dining room is situated overlooking the Lake and the food was excellent and very well presented. This Hotel is worth more than the three stars it is given and I cannot recommend it highly enough

Room Tip: Higher rooms Lake view had a bigger balcony but they are all of such a good standard

I don’t mean to sound too over the top in my praise but Hotel Vega really is a gem of a hotel and I can’t recommend it highly enough, just go here!

The only fault that I can think of is that it’s very hard to get in to without booking a long time in advance but this is simply a reflection of just how good a hotel it is. There are many people, and had circumstances been different we would have been 2 of them, who like it so much they come here every year and as such will book up for the following year as they’re checking out. This of course means that you have to be really on the ball if you’re fussy about how long and when you want to stay.

As for us we had 4 nights but had the opportunity been there would have happily stayed for a fortnight given the near perfect setting for a holiday the hotel provides. You’re right on the lakeside so you can go in for a swim whenever you like with the garden and decking areas allowing you to just lounge around. The medieval town centre and harbour of Malcesine is a couple of minutes walk down the road with the cable cars that take you up to the top of Monte Baldo just a couple of minutes more.

We stayed on a half board basis (I’m not sure if you get a choice) and compliments go to the chef as the food was excellent on all occasions with loads of choice for each course. The wine list has a large selection of local wines (and a few from slightly further away regions of Italy) and will have something for every taste and wallet with our personal favourite being the (admittedly pricey) local Amarone.

Our room, while basic enough, was clean, reasonably sized and had an amazing view from the balcony out over the lake. While having this view isn’t necessarily essential, since you’ll most likely be spending most of your time down at the lakeside or out and about, I would recommend trying to get a lake facing room for your first visit simply for the wow factor on arrival and on waking up each morning. But as I say, don’t be put off if you can’t get one of these rooms, you’ll still have a fantastic time I guarantee. We did get a quick look at one of the new rooms which have been built and these were extremely impressive and wouldn’t look out of place in a 5 star hotel.

Overall the value offered is amazing as the hotel honestly feels more like a high end four star rather than the three stars it advertises, which is a credit to Marco and his excellent team to whom nothing is too much trouble.

So, as I’m sure you can tell, we’ll definitely be back but next time we’ll be planning well in advance so that we stay for much longer.

Room Tip: Lake view rooms cost a bit more but are are worth it. The newer rooms seem to be very modern and do...

Hotel Vega exceeded my expectations in every way. It feels much more luxurious than the 3 stars suggest. If I was staying anywhere on Lake Garda I would not hesitate to book in at Vega.

All shared areas are beautifully finished, highly polished and contemporary in style. The balcony areas at the front of the hotel is great, with steps down into the lake and loungers laid out for a lazy afternoon, the communal balcony with seatin a table for 2 at the front of the first floor is rarely in use, so if you don't have a balcony you can most likely grab a chair and enjoy the warm afternoon sun anyway. Rooms are pleasant and clean with good shower cubicle and nice new Smart TV with a couple of BBC channels for keeping up with goings on at home.

There's a very nice garden area near the modern whirlpool, both again overlooking the lake. The staff are warm and friendly, approachable and with a good sense of humour.

The restaurant not only serves truly excellent food with very cleverly thought out choices but also has lake views for everyone in the room! Sunrise behind the west mountains in the morning, sunset in the evening. We didn't see any repetition of menus, each day we had an offer of a 'safe' option, a middle ground and authentic Italian option (my faves of the week were Linguine Vongole and a superb Saffron Risotto served with in a Parmesean 'bowl' topped with Asparagus), please try the superb varieties of plain grilled local fish - they're all delicious!.

Malcesine is a lovely town which is charming and interesting enough to spend a good few days without venturing out of the harbour. On the other hand, it makes a great base to treat yourself to a little day trip to Limone and/or Riva. There are many nice restaurants, cafes and gelaterias. I guarantee you'll run out of time score you can choose a favourite from the massive selection. Good value too - averaging €1.20/€1.50 for a single scoop in a waffle cone. Puts our generic 'Mr Whippy 99s' to shame. Lunchtime pizza (enough for 2 to share is around €7-8. Nightlife is atmospheric but nicely relaxed. It was a joy to pop out for an ice cream, wander around the cobbled streets, stopping for a spot of people watching with a carafe of reasonably priced wine, or a 'Hugo Spritz' - a delicious mix of elderflower cordial, mint and Prosecco! There was some live music in the harbour area on a few nights which made for a good holiday feel.

Excursions we booked were Venice (never again - too busy and over-hyped) and Bolzano/Renon which I highly recommend for a varied day out time for a wander around a pretty town, a cable car and tram journey to some excellent views. We did some casual boat hopping between resorts around Malcesine. We also visited the local castle and took the cable car to the top of Monte Baldo where we booked a tandem paragliding flight down to the bottom which was a pleasant experience with great views. An excellent holiday. Like many others it seems, I'd do it all again :)

Stayed at the Vega 3 years ago & this is only the 2nd time we have returned to the same accommodation ( the previous being our first anniversary-10 years ago!). The hotel is small & personal & Marco runs it like clockwork. The location is fabulous - right on the lake and just down the road from the centre of Malcesine & the ferry -about 5 minutes walk. There is a charge for a lake view room but personally I prefer the view from the front of the hotel over Monte Baldo where you can watch the paragliders in the early evening. The dining room overlooks the lake so there is plenty of opportunity to admire the lake at breakfast & dinner.

The rooms are not particularly large or fancy but spotlessly clean with air conditioning (although we didn't need it on this occasion). There were lots of hangers which are often something which seem to be rationed in hotels - so much so that I often take a few with me. The hotel is quiet & any music "noise" from elsewhere seems to finish by 11.30. I slept like a log & that is something I can't usually say of holiday accommodation. Mind you the bin lorry in the morning is pretty noisy but we were always up by then.

The food in the hotel was very good - tasty & hot. There was a choice of 3 starters & 3 main courses, preceded by salad if you wished & followed by dessert. On some evenings there was an "extra " with the compliments of the chef - we actually missed it on the evenings it didn't happen - it was nice to be "surprised" having not chosen the dish ourselves.I told Marco that we had lunch in quite an expensive restaurant in Sirmione only to find that the food in the Vega had much more flavour!!

The service was great & the staff were very friendly & we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

One note of caution- credit/debit cards are not accepted.

The hotel matches the whole ambience of Malcesine itself - from the castle to the cable car to Monte Baldo & all the cobbled streets in between - a delightful place to visit.
