“much better than expected”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 October 2010

Newmarket Holidays informed us 3 days before we were due to travel that we were being transferred to the Alpi from our original hotel. Having booked in January after a great deal of research through Tripadvisor and then seeing some of the comments on the Alpi we were less than happy. We were however, pleasantly surprised as we were nearer to the centre of Malcesine ( less than 5 mins walk to centre), it was clean and comfortable, the staff were pleasant and friendly, the grounds were lovely and included swimming pool and hot tub and the food was generally OK although having to choose an evening meal over breakfast is not ideal.
Only drawbacks for me were the bedframes which were solid wood and jutted out and had to be crefully avoided - which I didn't manage to do on a couple of occasions ending up with bruised shins, and "because they were closing for winter soon, stocks of some drinks were very low andour post dinner brandies were not available 3 times.

arrived at lunch time hungry and tired , checked in asked if some cerial might be available but the receptionist's english was not very good so we went to town for food and tea!!. the rooms were a little drab and needed updating but were comfortable. food was excellent as we had the luxury of a michelin chef-first class, swimming pool good with plenty of sunbeds. large garden so you could sit away from the pool area if you wanted to which was great, lovely town plenty of shops, amazing scenery, hotel in centre of town but back in off the road up a drive nice and quiet. family run hotel resident dog called Bobby who minded his own business and loved treats,,,,visited near by Verona and Venice. also smaller towns by boat on other side of the lake. quite near German border so a lot of visitore from there and a smaller amount of English and Irish . overall very pleasant.

Location is fine, in the centre beside the bus station and 5 mins to the lake/port area.

Rooms. Very much in need of modernisation and a good cleaning/painting. Cobwebs etc on ceilings/corners. Tired old furniture with freestanding wardrobes with wonky doors and dark dreary (old) drapes. Beds are only fit for a skip. I was sharing what was booked as a twin room. The hotel managed to cram two 3ft single bed frames into a 5ft surround! One was about 8ins higher than the other. Room was stifling and although it had aircon, "Sorry only in July and August". Arbitrary, an offer to pay didn't help. Room was on groundfloor with double doors out to terrace. Had to leave the shutter down as there was a wooded area directly behind. Changed after 4 days to 1st floor room. Equally dreary with stained green carpet on the wall behind the beds. This time it was actually twin beds. The springs on one were so worn that if you sat on the bed you nearly touched the floor. The second was better. Someone had thoughtfully placed a wooden garden shed type door (I am not joking!) between the matress and the springs thus at least giving the occupant a good night's sleep. The Tv's in the rooms are the 14in colour sets that were out about 20yrs ago. A mess of cables hung out of the back and in any event, no channels worked. I did not bother to complain as the room was to hot to stay in anyway. Sheets and towels were clean and the room was made up daily.

Food: The budget here per person for dinner bed and breakfast is at most about €10per day. Breakfast is the usual continental fare of cereals cold meats cheese communual yogurt bowls and tinned fruit. Orange juice was that strange sugar/water combo that comes from an auto dispense machine and while cold, tastes nothing like orange juice. Tea and coffee are from a similar dispenser and taste vile. Why pots of coffe/tea cannot be served is a mystery. If you wanted fried bacon/eggs there was a €4 surcharge.

It's one of those hotels where you order dinner at breakfast time. Very basic choices of starters, main course and dessert. Small portions too. (Ie; 2 slices of liver, a single small pork chop and lots of pasta ). You will not get fat here.
Salad bar include lots of lettuce and salad veggies, but hey!, they are cheap to buy.

One good thing, the staff are very friendly.

The pool area is nice and clean, but a little cluttered.
It may have been 3*** twenty years ago, but I would rate it 1* only. Not recommended.

In Ireland this place would have a job getting approval from The Irish Tourist Board.

overall we enjoyed our stay at the Alpi. Most of the gueste were either German or Italians and there was very little English spoken. In fact the week that we were there there were only four English speaking guests ..Having said that we communicated in our own way and we developed a rapport with others.
The hotel lobby is creepy -full of old photographs and stuffed things. You wouldn't want to sit there.
The dinner was good especially the salad bar . We didn't like breakfast so much- the choices were mainly geared towards Germans- lots of meat and cheese.
The pool area was fine and if you couldn't get a sunbed beside the pool you could always sunbathe in the garden which was very pleasant.
Our room was small bu twe were unlucky enough to have no views except a cliff and trees but we did have a large terrace.
.Staff were ok - the male waiters far more friendly and obliging than the the two females.
Our room was kept really clean but we had to ask for soap and shower gel on a number of occasions.
The hotel has a resident dog called Bobby who ignored us for our stay but we saw him atrack two guests on different occasions. I didn't think that he should have been allowed to wander freely around the place . Bring your dog dazer with you!
We go to Italy every year on holiday but this was the first trme that I was eaten alive by creatures not the hotel's fault -probably the area- so be warned.
If you want a hotel in the town centre this is the one for you but it's not perfect!

Bathroom
toilet and shower tray broken,
Complaint to management was completely ignored
swimming pool
depth of pool not shown on edge of pool and also no shallow end - dangerous for children.
Reception and dining area full fo stuffed animals (not live) and plastic flower arrangements everywhere!!!.
Overall decor - was dark dreary and depressing and we could not wait to get out of the place.

We stayed with a group of 10 for our wedding in Malcesine. The hotel is in a prime location, just set back from the main road through the town and away from the noise. It's a short walk to the Monte Baldo cable car station and also to the ferry station and town centre.
The rooms are a little dated but clean and the view from our room was spectacular. The balcony had a breath taking view of the lake, mountain and most importantly the castle we got married in!! The views from the rooms at the back of the hotel were obviously not fantastic!
The staff were friendly, although we did have a few language problems. The food was generally quite good and we spent most nights absolutely stuffed! We also had a 10 month old child in our group who the staff could not do enough for! The wine at the hotel was pretty cheap. Unfortunatley the pool was not heated so was pretty unbearable, however as it was only May the weather wasn't really that hot either so this was not a massive problem.
Reasonable price and would recommend highly.

Stayed at The Hotel Alpi from 17th-24th of August 2008.
The Hotel is situated in the Centre of Malcesine just off the main road which runs around the lake and is directly opposite the road leading downhill to the main shopping, tourist and harbour areas. Malcesine lies beneath and around the imposing castle which dominates the town. There is plenty to do for people of all ages including bars, some with live music, bathing around the lake, boat cruises and my personal favourite, the cable car trip to the summit of Monte baldo (17.5 Euros for adult and 8.5 Euros for children at this time) Local Bus and Ferry boats give access to other towns and resorts around the lake. You can also get to Verona and to Venice on Buses and trains.
The Hotel Alpi was superb, We stayed on a half board basis with self service breakfasts. Evening meals were self service salad course then waiter service for the remainder of the meal. The hotel was clean and tidy and some of the rooms at the front of the hotel had views across the town to the castle and were "to die for", My rating 8/10 and I will be going back

  • Liked — Great Food and friendly Staff
  • Disliked — Poor view from some of the rooms at the side of the Hotel
