Beautiful hotel but the hotels catering staff are more concerned in looking after the owners who live there rather then guests. The service was appalling in the restaurant. At breakfast you wait 25 mins for just a coffee and you would be lucky if your toast ever turned up. When we did manage to get service by the pool we found that the drinks were very expensive and were also put on the wrong rooms. I would hate to stay there when they are busy as this was a quiet time for them. The wedding we attended was perfect, they obviously get staff in especially for the day - its a pity that the hotel staff were not as attentive as the wedding staff. The hotel is meant to be 5 star and certainly does not have 5 star service. Shame it could be lovely as the setting is wonderful its just bad management.

Quite a bit expensive because of the conversion to euro for USA visitors but the hotel is in a fantastic location and I see why everyone wants to get married there. The entire area in Maratea is sensational and just a one hour ride along the coast rode will make you belive there is no more beautiful place in all of Italy. The food in the restaurants (casual attire) is escellent and among some of the freshest and best tastes in all of Italy and we speak from 25 years of experience.
We only ate at the hotel once and it was OK however we had more fun eating out with the Italian tourists in the area.
Denise at this hotel is a phenomenal hostess and takes care of all little complaints and details. She really cares.
It is quiet at night but this area and hotel rates real high. I hope it stays this way without thousands of tourists..Great port nearby

I never actually stayed here. It was the experience of "trying to" and dealing with management that was such a failure in customer service.

In September of 2003 my wife and I booked several days at the Hotel Santavenere and paid the required deposit of 280 Euros. Weeks before our arrival however the hotel cancelled our reservation and advised that they had decided to temporarily close the hotel for renovations. That was a big disappointment but...fair enough.

The problem occurred when I attempted to get my deposit back. The process was excruciatingly painful. Think about how long it takes to put through a credit card credit. 2 minutes? For weeks they totally ignored me. I sent e-mail after e-mail, including several to their parent company, each one stronger in tone. Still there was no response. After 8 weeks, I repeat, eight weeks, I finally threatened them with everything but Jihad including writing to the various levels of the Italian and Canadian government and tourist authorities, newspapers, tourist guide publishers, and on-line tourist sites such as this. They finally responded saying that they had issued my credit 2 days earlier. Yah, right!

I'm writing this review, albeit a bit late, to keep my promise to the Hotel Santavenere. Why do people act like that?

Spent three nights there and just loved the sheer luxury, the attention and the friendliness of the staff. Everything about this hotel is excellent. We have booked our daughter's wedding there for September and cannot wait to go back.

Stayed there in September 2004 and never expected that a place like this still exists.
Hidden paradise above the deep blue sea.
Welcomed like in a private house we had a "room with a view" overlooking the lush gardens and the sea.
Very discrete, but never stiff, the service was outstanding.
Food excellent and worth the money by no means. The staff was very helpful and friendly in all situations. They mailed our postcards altough we had no stamps, and they arrived, -they sent a shirt I forgott to my home address.
Public areas are vast and tastefully decorated, the beach area with the second restaurant, the bar and the facilities just wonderfull.
Hope to come back soon again.

Hotel Santavenere sits below the charming mediaeval town of Mararea, on the South West coast of Italy in the historically impoverished and relatively little-visited region of Basilicata (read 'Christ stopped at Eboli' by Primo Levi for a flavour of thegrinding feudal life of 50-100 years ago which made many seek an new life in the new world ).

The hotel is idyllic - the vision of a local Count who built it before tourism was heard of in the region. It sits 200 metres above the rocky sea-shore (with golf carts up and down for the idle), with great swimming and sunbathing, lovely coastal views (and inland walks for the energetic) and incredible food- not cheap but great value.

We loved the place and the subsequent reminder of the excellent, sympathetic and helpful service which happened back home in England some months later. Dining in Carluccio's, an Italian restaurant in London's Dockland business area, we were amazed to be approached by the hotel receptionists, who, in London for a trade exhibition, remembered us and greeted us like old friends- then apologised for being out of uniform! Go there.
