The views to the sea and across the countryside, from the Baglio Donna Franca, this boutique hotel tucked into the buildings of an old vineyard, are compelling. A warning to those driving: the trade-off is that it is seriously out in the country, 13 km from the town of Marsala and an extreme challenge to locate without either GPS or local help; we drove in very late after our flight to Palermo was delayed, and were lucky to stop on the main highway to ask directions of two local policemen, who took pity on us and actually led us the last 5 km.
The rooms are decent sized and appointed in comfort if not style; cupboards and bathroom storage are simple. Staff were all friendly and helpful -- including a tour of the cellar and generous tasting of the wines made on site.
We were there in the spring -- too chilly either to use the elegant-looking pool, or to dine on the large patio adjoining the restaurant -- but both would be greatly appealing.
The value proposition is excellent -- E 135 per night for two, a quite typical buffet breakfast included.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- The Wine Resort was built after the restoration and conversion of a large "baglio" located in the centre of an agricultural establishment that, at one time, belonged to the Florio family. The name Donna Franca is a homage to Franca Florio, who was an important and well-known figure of the Florio family. ... more less
