Me and my family stayed for just one night at the newly-opened Relais Il Pennino, but wish we stayed longer. Relais il Pennino is like a guesthouse, just five rooms which must have once formed part of a palace, as the rooms have high ceilings. The owner did a very fine job in the renovation, and because of the high ceiling our room had two levels with a queen sized bed on the groundfloor and two single beds accessible via a very comfortable stairway, ideal for family with kids or four adults. The rooms are facing a very quiet square in Massa Lubrense, and our room was accessible directly from the square, ideal for total privacy. At the back our room had a very spacious terrace with table and loungers and a very beautiful view of the countryside and the sea beyond. Bathroom with shower was very modern and new, and beds were really comfortable. Frigobar in the room was empty and switched off the evening we were there, probably because it was Wintertime, but I am sure this would be sorted out upon request, and this was not much of an issue for us when we arrived as there is a coffee shop which sells drinks right near the Relais, and the Relais also has its own spacious restaurant below the rooms, as the landscape is terraced at the back. The restaurant is so spacious and very beautifully renovated, the typical Italian restaurant with arches etc, we ate there in the evening and the food was extremely good and very well priced, if we stayed at the Relais longer we would have eaten there every night for sure. Massa Lubrense is a very quiet sweet town very close to Vico Equense and Sorrento. It may not have the open seaviews as the harbours of these two towns and so close to the coast, but it is worth staying here as a base for its tranquility, away from the tourist trap, and still enjoying a lovely view. I would highly recommend to anyone wanting a peaceful holiday and at the same time being very close to the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento Coast, Pompei, Naples etc. Owners are very nice, helpful and polite, and in the morning we were given a good typical Italian breakfast with fresh orange juice in the restaurant. Free internet connection was available at the restaurant when we were there,, I am not sure but probably it will be available in the rooms soon, as there seemed to be a socket for wifi in the room, ask when booking. We travelled to four different accomodations in the Amalfi and Sorento coast and this was one of our very favourites.

Relais Il Pennino comprises 5 newly refurbished rooms, above an established restaurant in Massa Lubrense - a small town just 5km south of Sorrento. My wife and I were looking for somewhere we could really relax and wind down - not a typical hotel, with a box for a room. And we weren't disappointed. Our room was large, with high ceilings (high enough for a mezzanine floor with two extra single beds) and was tastefully refurbished earlier this year. One thing we could have done with was coffee/tea making facilities, but we did have a small fridge to store our own supplies of bottled water etc. The main feature for us however was the large, open balcony (with loungers, umbrella etc) which had an almost 180 degree view of the Bay of Naples, including the islands of Capri and Ischia. As this was west-facing, there was nowhere else to be to watch the sunset over the sea. Spectacular.

Sergio the owner was very welcoming, always available and nothing was too much trouble. Our room was always cleaned well and towels changed daily. Breakfast was typically Italian, and usually comprised whatever head waiter Franco suggested, including fresh fruit, salami, local cheese etc. Breakfast was always on the restaurant terrace overlooking the bay.

Massa Lubrense is a quiet town with a few small hotels - feeling more like Italy than the pleasant but tourist-heavy resort of Sorrento. It's situated at the above the Marina Della Lobra, and has many pleasant on and off-road walks for the energetic. It also has a direct and frequent bus connection to Sorrento.

The highlight of many of our days was eating downstairs in the restaurant - called Il Cantuccio. We were never disappointed at the quality of the fresh produce, the dishes (largely local cuisine) and the presentation. On many nights, we were invited to go "off menu" and this was never a disappointment. There is also an extensive wine list. The clientele was always a mix of local people and European/American/Australian tourists - many of whom visited the restaurant more than once.

If you are looking for relaxation, great food, and a glimpse of real Italy, then I would recommend the Relais Il Pennino
