After a month road trip around france and italy we definately rated this the best hotel we stayed in. The swimming pool was just perfect with the most beautiful panoramic view. The rooms were clean and the staff we very professional. The breakfast was a great start to the day and the hotel food was actually better than some of the local restaurants we visited. Overall a lovely place and will be going back at some point in the future.

My husband and I took a European trip in June, and Lake Como was one of our stops. We stayed at the Hotel Royal. This hotel is perched on a hill above the town, and requires about a 20 minute walk to the water. Once we got the route down, it wasn't difficult to make our way to and from the town and water taxis. It was extremely hot when we visited, and the hotel doesn't have air conditioning (as so many European hotels that aren't a "chain" hotel lack). The grounds of the hotel are quite lovely, and it has a pool. We were in a room that didn't offer a lot of privacy...our bedroom window, when opened, looked out to the driveway to the hotel, and our patio was positioned where people walking back from dinner, the pool, or an outdoor cafe/sitting area would pass. Knowing this, if we return, we would ask for a different room. Maybe we're just antisocial, though. :) We ate dinner at the hotel, and it was absolutely fabulous. The chef, Mario, grows his own produce, and the quality of the food is evident. Breakfast came with our room charge, and it is quite good. I don't recall if there were eggs, but there were a great many options, and it was lovely to sit outside in the morning eating our breakfast. All in all, a lovely experience.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with lake views, but not on the main floor.

We stayed for 1 night and had a room with no balcony. It was a tiny room - we could hardly find space for our luggage. The room was really dated and the bathroom was decorated in the 1970's and hadn't been touched since. The shower door leaked and didn't shut properly. The lounge area had 3 cats wandering around in it and one cat strolled through the restaurant during breakfast without a second glance from the waiter! Not good considering my husband is highly allergic to cats! Breakfast was poor - the bread was stale. Th hotel is situated a good 25 minutes walk down to the centre so we needed to get a taxi back up the hill at night for 7 euros. The evening meal at night was good but pricey and service wasn't very attentive. Receptionist was helpful with local information. It was the most expensive hotel we stayed in on our trip and the worst for value for money.

We two couples stayed one night in this glorious small hotel on a road trip to Italy. The hotel is located up from the lake in a quiet residential area with lake views from the poolside and some rooms in the main building. Our garden rooms were spacious and comfortable each bedroom opening onto an outdoor terrace with seating and table looking onto a pretty lawned area, we even found cushions for outside in the wardrobe. There was secure underground parking next to the fitness area below the rooms, all of which was clean and tidy. We ate in the restaurant, excellent ambiance and delicious food. Next day we swam in the spotless if chilly pool before n first class breakfast, plenty of choice, plenty of good coffee. the croissants were the best of our holiday. Mario has this place running like clockwork, everything as it should be, helpful and friendly staff but always professional, beautiful spaces indoors and out, and everything excellent value. The only fault we found was my brother, a Yorkshire farmer, felt the lawn could have done with a feed though he agreed the grounds were immaculate otherwise.

We booked into this hotel for the second night of a four night tour round the Lake Como area. It was undoubtedly the best hotel on the trip, and possibly the best hotel we've stayed in for a long time!

From the warm welcome from the owner at check-in, to the huge room with views across the lake, to the balcony and lawn area of the hotel, everything just seemed perfect. We chose to eat in the restaurant instead of going down to the centre of the town of Menaggio and were very glad we did! Not only was this the best hotel to sleep in, but it was pretty close to the best meal we had on the trip as well.

Our only gripe with the place is that we only stayed one night! We'll rectify that some day though.

Note, it's about 30 minutes walk up the long hill from the town centre, which can be a struggle at the hottest time of the day, although we managed it without too much bother. A taxi up is €10 and bus C13 (which we never took so can't comment on how busy or frequent it is) stops nearby. Walking down is no bother and a very pretty walk.

Recommend without hesitation!

Room Tip: Worth paying the extra for a lake view

We stayed for 4 nights in June...staff very friendly had 2 evening meals which were superb ..breakfasts were also really good ( though bagettes a little chewy ) however we had paid extra for a junior suite and were dissapointed that there was not a fridge..also no views from the room...you really do need a car for this hotel,as we had driven not a problem. really a little pricey for what you didnt get !!

Room Tip: try to stay in the hotel itself ..other rooms & junior suites are in an annex building across th...

A physician colleague of mine, living in Pisa, recommended this hotel to my wife and me for a getaway weekend. Great recommendation! Signor Colombo and his family and other hotel staff were friendly, knowledgeable of the area, professional, and very helpful in assisting my wife and me in maximizing our trip to Lake Como. Our room was in an annex located across the street from the main building. Clean and very comfortable. I recommend asking for a room with a lake view in the main building. However, lake views are available from anywhere with less than a 5-minute walk.
We had no intention of dining at the hotel restaurant, especially with so many options around the lake. With our late arrival, we opted to dine at the hotel. Mr. Colombo presented menus to us; I asked him what he recommended. As he described the chef's specialties, we put down our menus and told him there was no need for further descriptions; he had us sold! Mr. Colombo skillfully recommended a wine (very nice selection to choose from) that complimented our meal very well. The chef is an artist; taste and presentation were spectacular. The restaurant staff was attentive and friendly. The staff was flexible with discounts for a 4-course meal for 2 and a bottle of wine since we were hotel guests (check out the half-board rates), which is much less than most restaurants around the lake. I highly doubt any other restaurant had higher quality meals. It was so good, we opted to dine here our second and final night; we were again wowed by the chef's culinary skills. Breakfast was continental and delicious; Americans will have to ask for our preferred eggs to order and pay extra for this.
The hotel grounds were immaculate, seated on a mountainside, surrounded by peace and tranquility. The swimming pool was clean and inviting. There was ample parking for our car.
The Colombo family takes great pride in serving to international guests and making all feel welcome. Their passion for their work shows in all facets of this hotel.
I look forward to returning here. I highly recommend the Hotel Royal to all, especially my fellow Americans.

Room Tip: Ask for a lake view room; you may have to book this room well in advance.
