“Disappointing”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 October 2013

After a stunning stay in Cannero on Lake Maggiore, this hotel was a real let down. Changed rooms but still disappointed. Very old and tired, cramped, threadbare carpet, thin walls.... To their credit they did allow us to check out 2 days early without penalty but my advice is to avoid !

The other reviews say it all. A classical style in a superb location. It has a nice seating area out front overlooking a garden and the lake beyond. Outside the garden there is a quiet, one-way road then a lovely promenade on the lake front Turn left and you will find a nice bar just a few minutes away. Turn right you are about 3-5 minutes pleasant stroll from the town centre. A perfect location - elegant, lots to do and quiet (unlike Tremezzo and Cadenabbria).

The centre has bars, restaurants and the superb Gelateria Edo (look for the queue!). In the small streets there are bakers, a cheese shop that sells all you need for picnics, greengrocers and a supermarket.

The lobby of the hotel is impressive;y grand and there are lots of comfortable seats. The staff are first class - friendly and helpful everyone of them. The corridors and the room we had were a bit of let down in that they were dimly lit and the decor made it all look a bit gloomy. The rooms on the fornt are better but we ere on a budget. At first we were disappointed with the room but everything worked and it was kept clean - by the end we were less critical because we liked the other features so much.

Our tour included the set dinner and we thought it was good value for the money. Some nights the choice of one of the courses was not great but all the food was good and many of the individual dishes were excellent. Drinks prices were reasonable for the area.

Overall, we thin 4 stars is right and we will be going back again.
ps We think Menaggio is the best of the towns on the lake, partly because were able to go walking in the hills straight from the hotel.

Room Tip: Go for a room overlooking the lake

An 'older style' Grand hotel with grandeur and customer care to match. Yes, the decor is a little
tired but in Italy this only adds to the charm and nothing detracts from the magnificent setting.
Our room, French doors opening to glorious views of the superb Lake Como - the waters
shimmering in the sunshine reflecting the wonderful green slopes of the hills and
mountains surrounding and protecting the stunning Villas.
The glass-curtained dining room allows maximum appreciation of these superb surroundings
whilst sampling the delicious breakfast choices and the excellent evening cuisine.
Nothing is too much trouble for the front of house team and, of course Paolo...
Exploring your surroundings you will find an excellent choice of shops and restaurants within
a short walk and, of course, the ferries which will allow you to explore the whole of the Lake or,
you could take a bus and wend your way into Switzerland. What a wonderful holiday!

Room Tip: A lake view is perfect but even those without are bound to be quiet in this perfectly situated hotel...

We returned to Menaggio after 5 years and the magic is still there. Paolo and front-of-house team are always very friendly and helpful and this extends to all the staff we met. Perhaps as others say the hotel is a little tired in places but nothing that detracts from the overall charm of the place - though in room tea and coffee facilities would be a useful addition. A 3 minute walk to just about any of the local restaurants - and we managed to sample most of them during our stay! A good base for exploring the lakes - and we even took in the magic of the Italian GP as we'd driven down to Italy and Monza is just over an hour away. Dined in the restaurant one night and had a delicious meal.

Room Tip: You really do need to have a room overlooking the lake if you stay on Lake Como.

I have been going to this hotel for years. The service is wonderful. It is right on the lake and Menaggio is a wonderful small village with great little shops and restaurants. and you can always hop on a boat and explore other places. there is a big pool which is open only to guests so never too crowded and usually very peaceful and quiet.

Room Tip: I always stay on the first or second floor in the front facing the lake. the sunrises are spectacul...

The hotel is situated in a prime waterfront location in a popular village on this lake. Rooms are excellent both lake view or mountain view, bathrooms modern and house maid kept everything pristine. Unfortunately the catering let the hotel down with evening meals being bland and boring with no sign of any Italian flare. Seating arrangements for groups were poor with guests being required to sit in large groups, no tables for couples! Waiting staff were only average. Breakfasts were however good with plenty of variety at the self service buffet.
In summary a good location, good facilities but don't expect much in the way of good dining (Food at grand hotel Mennaggio much superior)
