Grand Hotel Menaggio

The location of Grand Hotel Menaggio couldn't be better, right next to the boat stop and just along the road from the centre of Menaggio. The pool overlooks the lake which is beautiful. Rooms are extremely large and clean. We ate in the restaurant one night and had the set dinner which was decidedly average, however, that was the only negative about the hotel, the rest was fantastic.

We stayed here for 3 nights and the hotel was absolutely beautiful...the lobby was very inviting and the staff very friendly and accomodating. would definitely stay here again! We walked everywhere or took the boats from Menaggio to other cities along Lake Como...such a great place to have as a base to start from.

avoid room 325 on 3rd floor it is next to lift shaft .It creaked and groaned every time it was used. Breakfast very repetitive. Excellent location. Weather good. Hotel could do with a few sun shades round the pool.

After reading some reviews we were pleasantly surprised with this hotel.
There was a problem with the first room we were allocated, which was in the loft and had a very tiny window which you could not see out of. The room (we called it "the bunker") was small and the bathroom tiny. We asked to move and did so when a room became available. The next room and bathroom was much bigger, although the room felt a bit tired it was adequate for the time spent in it and was kept spotlessly clean. We overlooked the carpark and road but did not have a problem with noise.
The location was great with excellent views, a short walk from the centre.
The evening meal at the hotel had plenty of choice and was good, the breakfast was ok but the coffee was dire!
We found most of the staff friendly and helpful, with the exception of one waitress in the dining room.
We travelled as part of a group with Riviera travel, the tour was excellent, well organised and our tour leader Christine was brilliant.

Compared to some of the Italian hotels we have stayed in, this hotel was very good. I think we must have been allocated a good room as the decor was fairly new even if the designs were rather outmoded. We had a generous bathroom with working shower and hot water whenever it was required. Our room faced the road, which although not as glamourous as the lake facing rooms, it was, as we discovered talking to our fellow guests, actually quieter than the lake facing rooms. Unfortunately health and safety regs are preventing quite a few hotels from providing tea and coffee making facilities in the room. We recently stayed in the Waldorf Astoria NY and there were no tea or coffee making facilities in our room. We travelled with Riviera Travel and the hotel easily coped with our travel schedule and there was adequte room on the ground floor to wait for our coach to arrive. A great location with the added fascination of possibly bumping into George Clooney who has a villa not far away.

I have stayed at the Grand Hotel Menaggio five times. The location is perfect on the lake, great for visiting Bellagio, Varenna etc and the ferry stop is literally next to the hotel. The hotel breakfast is great, and the service is excellent. The decor and feel of the hotel is starting to feel a little dated and there have been increasingly numerous coach parties in the hotel making it very busy. The rooms we have had have been clean but basic.

Room Tip: Lake view rooms are the best bet.

It's not easy to find a holiday which suits the needs for parents to chill out and teenage boys to be constantly on the go, so thanks are due once again to @JohnAllanTravel, Didcot, and @PrestigeHolidays for this perfect solution. Staff who were attentive and friendly, multilingual but patient when we tried out our Italian. A clean, elegant hotel with all the facilities you could possibly need, including a paperback library for by the pool and a well-equipped gym and 5 minutes away from the town. Menaggio is geared towards tourists but laid back and welcoming and safe for the young to go for emergency ice-creams or cold drinks by the harbour for a change of scene. At the time we went British coach tours seemed to make up the majority of the guests but when Italians themselves are on holiday there (as they were), you feel it's the real deal.
