As other contributors have said – a great location! Overlooking the lake the views are stunning in all weathers (and this year that is exactly what you are likely to get!). The hotel is also very close to some lovely restaurants, the bus stop and the ferry terminal – all of which is very useful

The rooms are fairly small and slightly dated and I suspect there are more showers en suite than baths so it is likely that you will need to ask specifically if you want the latter. In common with most Italian hotels, there are no drinks making facilities in the rooms and should the weather become hot, I suspect that the air con would struggle. You may not want to leave your door open at night as the ferries tend to blow their horns as they arrive! I thought my alarm clock was bad enough..

The breakfasts were adequate and predictable with fruit, cheese, ham and a variety of breads and cakes. You can ask for a boiled egg if you feel so moved. We went out to eat other than this so I cannot comment on the evening fare

The staff are friendly and helpful. We didn't have a car with us but parking is at a premium but not impossible

An enjoyable and convenient place to stay

Room Tip: Choose a lake view room and have a balcony if you can

Just returned from an 8 day holiday to Lake Como in Italy with Riviera Travel. It was fantastic (despite the inclement weather). The hotel, Grand Menaggio, is very comfortable with wonderful veiws across the lake. We had a very nice room with a balcony, though not looking over the lake, still had a nice view overlooking the mountains. The room was quite big and had a very comfortable large bed. The only drawback was that there was no shower screen or curtain which made showering a bit tricky!! We had a half board option for our holiday and the first impression on the restaurant was for our evening meal and the window walling was open and we were seated right in front overlooking the beautiful lake and mountains. The food was delicious with 4 courses every evening with a good menu choice. The wine wasn't too expensive with a good selection of lovely local wines. The water offered was not complimentary and cost 4 euros per night. The buffet breakfast was nice although the cooked option only consisted of scrambled eggs and streaky bacon. There was a good selection of continental type food (ie cold meats/cheeses and pastries etc). The restaurant/bar staff, porters and chamber maids were always very friendly. We didn't really go to reception as our Guide Pilar was always on hand to help.
We had several excursions arranged as part of our break which included a couple of trips to Switzerland (Laguna and St Moritz via the Bernina Railway). All the trips were well organised and our guide, Pilar, was absolutely brilliant. She was extremely intelligent and had so much knowledge on everything we did. She was really friendly and helpful. One thing I would be aware of is that Riviera tells you on the booking confirmation that you are able to check in and print your return boarding passes in the hotel. We traveled out on Ryanair and you're only able to check in your return if traveling back in less that 7 days or you have to pay extra. We decided to check in the return when we got to the resort but found out that this would be quite difficult as the hotel wasn't able to help. Pilar came to our rescue but doing it for us using a friend's computer/printer. In future I will make sure that I book our return (paying the extra cost) to avoid any aggro which can spoil the holiday.
I would recommend this hotel and would definitely stay there again. I would advise to pack for 2 types of weather as it can be extremely wet and chilly (even in August) but it can equally be very warm and sunny.

Nice hotel, location is great and pool area accommodating. Little bit dated and poor bar facilities. Ferry is very close ideal for travelling from all directions. Reception staff very accommodating helped us on several occasions including helping us hire a speed boat. Requested a room with a bath and didn't give us one, was told the following day we would get one but this did not happen.

Everything about this hotel is location. When you enter through the front door the view is of a lovely lobby area, the outdoor swimming pool, Lake Como and the mountains beyond. Fabulous! The rooms are very dated. There is a particular problem in some rooms in relation to plugs. Not all plugs are European standard. They are a legacy Italian standard and not all European adaptors work. Bear this in mind if you have chargeable electronic equipment. Our room had a shower (no bath) and it was very dated and dark but it worked adequately. Room had a TV, no coffee making facilities, had a hair dryer. Bed was comfortable. Room was very clean and a reasonable size, and had air conditioning. All staff were very friendly and professional. Breakfast was fine with a reasonable choice. Evening meals were excellent, though please note they charge for water. The view from the restaurant of Lake Como makes visiting the restaurant a joy. Hotel is located close to the lake front and very near the town centre, making for beautiful post dinner strolls! We did not notice any noise from the very nearby Ferryport. Overall a very nice hotel to spend a few days in but it could do with investment in the bedrooms.

Room Tip: There is a late night bar close to some rooms near the lake front. Some customers complained about t...

The location could not be better, right next to the ferry terminal where half a dozen different boats do various trips or crossings around the lake. One will take you quickly to Como itself. Also, the car ferry crosses the lake from there. Our balcony looked onto the concourse so we could watch all the activity which, by the way stops overnight. We found the hotel good in nearly every way - staff willing to please, clean everywhere, comfortable with a good sized swimming pool. It did not seem too busy during our visit in July, which perhaps explains why there weren't many sun beds available, but we generally found a place to sit in the afternoons after our trips out. Wifi was available, but needed a new code each day, and was variable in strength and speed. I am sure they could do better in this area. Sitting outside in the morning sunshine for breakfast is something we only dream of in UK and here we enjoyed plenty of choices; fresh fruit, cereals, cheeses, rolls, pastry and scrambled eggs with bacon. The staff were extremely helpful and made our dinner each evening another delight to look forward to.

Room Tip: Ask for a Lake View. It was wonderful to look out at the stunning scenery each day.

The Grand Hotel Menaggio is situated immediately on Lake Como with its stunning scenery. As with most Lake Como hotels, its furnishings are quaint, old fashioned Italian charm.

The hotel has 3 floors and the better rooms are those overlooking the lake. Rooms on the 2nd and 3rd floor have the best views as the 1st floor is slightly obscured by trees (although this did not bother us).

Rooms do vary in size and furnishings and the bathrooms differ; some have a bath with shower attachment whilst others a walk-in shower.

We were in Room 115 which is overlooking the lake and has a small terrace. Our bathroom was very very small but did have a walk-in shower. Room 114 looked slightly larger with a bigger bathroom but had a bath (also has a small terrace).

Be aware when paying extra for a balcony that some are simply Juliet-style.

Rooms have excellent air conditioning, safe, well stocked mini bar, flatscreen TV (only English channel is BBC World News), hairdryer (on bathroom wall), large 6ft bed (made of 2 singles), free WiFi.

The hotel has two restaurants, one for the use of those on HB whilst the second is A La Carte (this has a more extensive menu and those on HB receive a €20 credit per person). Contrary to feedback below, I found the waiting staff (and those throughout the hotel) to be extremely pleasant and helpful.

Breakfast is completely self-service and a fairly basic continental offering; the only hot being scrambled egg and bacon. Coffee varied daily from drinkable to something with a consistency of hot treacle.

Lunch is served in the main restaurant - 3 courses or light meals/snacks are available.

Dinner is waiter service. Four small courses which are a hit or miss - pick wisely and you can have a very pleasant meal. There is a huge wine list.

The hotel's bar opens 10am till late and serves toasted sandwiches. Beer is Peroni or Becks and there is a long list of cocktails.

Immediately to the right (front facing) of the hotel is a Ferry Service. This operates throughout the day and the boats/tannoy can be heard from the poolside and rooms on the far right. It did not bother us but could be deemed a nuisance to others.

The pool whilst not enormous, is sufficient for this small hotel, but there are not enough sunbeds for the number of guests. Pool towels are provided together with a towel bag and replaced daily. The hotel has its own launch pad so if you are brave enough you are able to swim quite easily in the lake.

It is just 10 mins max to walk into town where there are plenty of bars, restaurants and shops. Friday is market night and the town square and promenade are filled with stalls.

The average age of guest at this hotel seems to be in the 60-70's age bracket. Evening entertainment was provided on just 3 nights during our week's stay, and was very simple background music/singer.

We had booked this holiday via Riviera and were extremely well looked after from start to finish by the tour guide (Marina). The trips to St. Moritz, Bellagio and the Villa Balbianello being the highlight. Be aware that some trips start very early and range from 7.15am to 9.45am.

Room Tip: Rooms 115, 114 and 112 all have views of the lake and small terraces with table and chairs. Views o...

Grand Hotel Menaggio is a mixed bag. In truth, it is not a grand hotel, but it does have a great location, and some charming staff.
Its position next to the ferry station is great, and gives access to all the principal towns and villages on the Lake. It is also convenient for the town, just three minutes or so away, offering a basic range of shops, bars and café/restaurants. Bellagio, a boat ride away, offers more choice.
Our Lake View room did have a sensational view, and it was roomy, with a large and comfortable bed, and efficient air conditioning. However, the bathroom was exceptionally poorly lit, and the shower feeble. Wifi was available in the room, but bandwidth and speed were poor. Most electrical sockets were of a special lighting configuration, and there was only one regular continental socket, for the minibar fridge. Charging multiple phones/tablets/computer could therefore be a problem, and involve unplugging the fridge (not a problem in our case as the fridge did not work!).
Breakfasts were fine, although not a great selection of fresh fruit. You could make tea, in a pot, with the Twinings tea bags they supplied.
The bar offered drinks in the garden overlooking the lake, but beers and wine were never properly cold, other drinks were insufficiently iced, in Campari sodas the soda was flat, and over several nights the ‘complimentary’ crisps were soft every time.
The main, Table D’hote restaurant has great positioning overlooking the lake, but in spite of the fancy French names on the menu, didn’t rise above home plain cooking, with an over-dependence on canned products. Service standards were mixed, and the whole experience was redolent of school dinners. We ate there only once.
There is also an A La Carte restaurant; if your package includes dinner, you will receive a €20 a night credit against your expenditure in this restaurant. It is presided over by an attentive but curiously unsmiling individual. This restaurant has an interesting menu, with better food and excellent wine, in a pleasant outdoor situation. However, if you visit there a second time, the menu is unchanged. Eventually we gave up on the hotel meals we had paid for and ate out.
