“Camp beds were better than they looked”
Reviewed 22 September 2008

Last night hotel of our Cosmos tour to Italy and the prospect of a night on a camp style bed was not one I was looking forward to but it was OK. Room clean as were towels and linen but smelt of smoke. Good evening meal at a reasonable price. We walked into Mestre itself and really liked the centre.

I found this hotel to be no where near as bad as other reviews had suggested. Yes, it is in the suburbs and if you arrive on a Sunday the area is deserted as the locals go out for the day with their families

The hotel exterior is unprepossessing and the reception is dated however, it is clean and bright.

The room we stayed in was small but comfortable and clean. The air conditioning worked well. There were no real views to be had apart from other residences.

The restaurant is clean and bright, the food provided as part of the tour was basic. Think school dinners! The food combinations were…unusual. Such as roast pork, gravy and iceberg lettuce with grated carrot. (Opposite the hotel is a pizzeria.)

When we arrived at the hotel it was mid afternoon and we needed lunch. The hotel does have a bar menu but, it was expensive. We ventured out despite other reviews claiming there is nothing we found a small Italian place. The locals went there to read the newspapers. We had a tasty cheese and ham ‘toast’ and drink for very little indeed. (Exit the hotel turn left, walk down the road towards the bus stop. The place is on the crossroads in front. 3 minutes walk.)

Across the road is a small supermarket which will open on Monday morning just in time for you to pick up some provisions.

Behind the hotel is a park with a children’s playground in it, apart from this you could go for a walk or there is a small area outside the hotel where you can have a drink. There are quite a lot of mosquitoes around so bring some repellent.

I must admit that if this is your first night on a Cosmos Tourama holiday in Italy it does feel like an anti climax, but if you are prepared for it you can treat it as part of the journey and make the most of it.

I would like to add that it is very easy to travel to Venice by yourself. You can catch a bus on the road just down from the hotel they run regularly even on the Sunday and are inexpensive.

Stayed at this hotel as part of a Cosmos tour. The twin room was of average size with a small bathroom with a decent shower. The room was not the cleanest room we have stayed in with some strange stains on the walls. The beds were very soft and sank in the middle when you slept. The main problem we had was the noise...you could hear EVERYTHING from the next rooms! I think this was made worse by the fact that one of the adjoining rooms had a door linking our room, that was locked but did not provide any sound proofing, you could even hear people talking quietly! Having no sleep when you are on a busy tour is not the best way to start your day.

The local area is mainly residential but if you walk left out of the hotel for around 5- 10 mins you will find shops, restaurants etc. There is a supermarket across the road that opens at 08.30. Ate breakfast and dinner in the hotel both of poor standard...tinned fruit cocktail for breakfast anyone!

Stayed here with a Cosmos tour group-small twin beds soft but tolerable for 3 nights. Kind of dirty and smokey. Actual eggs at breakfast buffet. Nice restaurant across the street that does not take credit cards. If I had a choice staying in Venice would be the best, the Albatros was just OK (my standards were lowered by the time we got here!)

  • Liked — The bathroom had a tub.
  • Disliked — Kind of dirty, small beds, nothing fancy!

We stayed here with a Cosmos tour group. The room and bath were the largest we had in Italy. The corridor and room carpeting had numerous
stains. A lot of cappuccino maybe? The front desk staff was friendly,
but the woman in the breakfast room was over the top rude. I don't like sharing a table at breakfast, but they insist. The pizzaria across the steet is average and there didn't seem to be many alternatives. The hotel is remote, even from Mestre. It seemed like a long bus ride to Piazza Roma in Venice from the hotel.

Cosmos "Essential Italy" had booked the Hotel Albatros in Mestre Italy for this final leg of our tour. This hotel was outside of Venice but was still accessible using the #2 bus. Once at the main terminal, you could take a water ferry or even WALK into Venice. Our room was on the first floor and must have been recently remodeled. The room was quite large but the twin beds were really small size. Bathroom was adequate. Room was clean and comfortable. Breakfast was really good. Hot scrambled eggs, ham, breads, yogurt, cereal were available. Waitress brought cold juice and coffee/tea to your table. Directly across from the hotel was a restaurant, tobacco shop and small mercado. Another block to the left was a Catholic Church for services. We had a very pleasant experience at this hotel.

  • Liked — Clean, comfortable, friendly/helpful front desk staff.
  • Disliked — Location of hotel
  • Tips/Secrets — We visited Murano on our visit. Didn't have time to see Burano.

- Too far from Venice Island although bus service (1 Euro) is available in a short walking distance. 10 stops to Piazza Roma and 7 stops to Mestre Train Station
- Too many mosquitoes in this area
- Supermarket is right across the street
- Big breakfast room, but no variety (plan yogurt (taste yucky), croissants, buns, red orange juice, coffee, tea, and ham). same everyday.
- No free city map (3 Euros)
- Key lock safety box in room
- Double bed is 2 joint twin beds
- Bathroom and bathtub are tiny
- Don't eat at the pizza place right across the street (high cover charge with bad and slow service). No meat in salmon pasta.

  • Disliked — Too far from Venice Island
