Description: Excellent formal French-Italian restaurant, recently opened in Piazza (old town) part of Mondovi. Italian-French Chef Marc Laterni and his American sommelier wife do a masterful job, creating delicious seasonal dishes paired with local wines in an elegant, modern room with a theatre kitchen and a small coutyard garden for appertifs n open theatre kitchen and a charming pocket courtyard garden.

We ate here to celebrate, and had the tasting menu with wine. I am gluten intolerant and within a few minutes the chef had made some wheat-free crackers! The whole meal was wonderful. The wine selection was brilliant, and each wine was introduced and described so we understood the local area and how the wine fitted the food.

Watching the kitchen (through the big plate glass window) was fun: friendly, purposeful, and efficient.

This restaurant is worth making a special trip! (Stay at a nearby B&B and go twice!) Good parking, accessible from the A6, by train (from Turin and hence from Paris or London).

I live in Mondovì and sometimes I pop in for a "worker's lunch". There is no compromise in quality or service and it's a perfect addition to our little city. Mondovì is placed not so far from the Langhe (Alpine foothills) famous for truffles and wine. The food you can taste scattered in the hills is amazing, but just far enough that it may take an afternoon of planning to get there. Instead, to get to Balaurdo (just a funicular ride up to the top of our sweet little city) I find the same top notch quality northern Italian cuisine as I would in the hills.

This is a recently opened restaurant in the sleepy but beautiful Piemontese town of Mondovi. Perched on the edge of 'Piazza' -- the old, noble part of Mondovi, filled with crumbling palazzos, a magnificently oversized bell-tower clock and a large irregularly shaped and very beautiful main piazza-- il Baluardo serves amazing, elegant dishes in a serene and modern atmosphere. It's located on a slightly odd street/area (across from the local elementary school (Scuola Materna)) but don't be offput by that. Once you are inside all the world disappears. Word on the street is that in the next year it may well be awarded a Michelin star, due to the quality and innovation. The chef is fantastically experienced, friendly and not only delivers the goods but you can see him in action in his uber-modern 'theatre style' kitchen. His wife is the sommelier is American and very knowledgeable and friendly . Although the Langhe and other regions of Piemonte (for example, Barolo, Bra, Alba) are known for fantastic food, the combination of modern sensibilities, traditional techniques and the 'savoir faire' that the French can bring to any cuisine makes this a unique and worthwhile restaurant. Not an inexpensive place, but a very worthwhile special occasion spot.
(p.s. there is an interior courtyard 'pocket-sized' garden available for apertifs (and dinner, I believe).
After (or before) Piazza warrants a leisurely stroll and drinks at Cantina Bonaparte, which has a terrace overlooking the Langhe hills. A magic afternoon or evening.
