“This Hotel Needs A Few Things - 1 or 2 of the 4 stars have Fallen Off!”
Reviewed 7 July 2013

When you arrive at the Grand Hotel Nizza Et Suisse ****, with 4 stars **** clearly on the front of the building, you expect luxury. That means a pool, a real spa (after all, this is a spa town), and excellent service and luxurious rooms. 4 stars is a high standard.

The Good: The hotel is pretty from the outside, and the bar and bartender are super. He can serve you a drink from 3pm to midnight, even outside. This was convenient, because honestly the town was a bit boring and I needed a few drinks to deal with it. Monsummano Terme & Grotta Giusti are the standard in this area, and the other hotels have to step it up a bit.

The OK: The staff puts on a decent effort to be 4 star. However, you can tell they are putting on a bit of an act. The pool is cute in the picture, but in reality it's a small area with no jacuzzi and no life to it. I wanted to relax in a jacuzzi, so I paid the extra 30 euros (!) to use the brand new Ka spa downstairs. Interesting and quite beautiful, but boring because there will be NOBODY ELSE THERE. It's a bit strange to be walking around from jacuzzi to steam bath to tea to showers with an attendant there just to monitor you for your 90 minute stay before you have to leave. This might be ideal for couples who want to pay 60 euros extra for a 90 minute romantic time, but otherwise it's kind of silly. Whoever designed the spa area, however, was very talented...I spent my time there thinking that I hope they make their money back eventually. The steam room was beautifully lit, with twinkling lights that change colors. Nice.

The not-so-good: Some peeling paint in/out, slow drains in the bathroom, this hotel like the town is showing its age and it needs to be freshened up. Maybe now that the spa is done, the hotel will follow. Overall, not a bad value, but be prepared.

Room Tip: Rooms in the front facing the street are well-located.

May I first start by saying that my husband and I do not moan about the least little thing, having said that this hotel is like stepping back in time. The room we were given was large but dark and dingy, we opened the shutters on outside of windows but closed them up right away as they were about to literally fall off, hence we had no natural light for 7 days. The room smelt dirty (I presume it was the carpet) and I had to buy some lavender bags from a stall to place round room to try and get rid of this odour. There were stains on the wallpaper on walls. Considering the room was so big there was hardly any storage space and the wardrobe was a rail with 4 coat hangers behind curtains. The shower was over the bath and shower head was loose hence did not work properly, we requested them to repair this 4 times but nothing got done about this, I think they must have been writing our request down with invisible ink. The back of bathroom door at some time had been wet on the bottom so they had nailed a piece of board on the bottom and painted it same colour as door. I must however say that the bed and bedding and bathroom were really clean. The corridor leading to our room was so dark we could not see to get key in lock to open door, the wall lights were supposed to have 2 bulbs in but they all had only 1 bulb working. The pool area of the hotel is disgraceful it obviously had not been swept for a long time, the pool had a black line of scum all round the tiles. Pool is small and there are 7 sunbeds and four chairs, with over 100 rooms in hotel, however not many people seemed to use the pool or area round it, maybe if it had been well maintained more people would want to use it. Oh and there is a dining room in hotel but if you are staying bed and breakfast you are not allowed into the dining room you have to take breakfast in the large hotel foyer or out on terrace at front of hotel, but watch the birds as they swoop down and steal your bread. We booked from their own website and the room we were given was nothing like the rooms they show on the site.

Wonderful place to stay. Enrico, the front desk manager was absolutely wonderful and extremely helpful. Adriano, the bartender, was fantastic. I would highly recommend this hotel. I need to put in 200 characters to fill out this form so that is why this last setence is here.

We stayed here on a weeklong tour of the Tuscany region. Great central location for day trips to many wonderful towns. The hotel was very pretty. The staff was more than friendly. Very helpful with local information and calling cabs for us. Booked appointment for spa right through the front desk. Excellent food in the dining room. For those that complain about the rooms being "dated", consider that you are in a historic town in Italy!!!! Embrace it!!! Adrino, a staff member in the dining room and bar was our favorite!!! Would recommend this hotel to anyone!!

Good hotel even though quite old fashioned and with an uncoordinated decor style. Large and clean rooms and bathrooms. Quiet atmosphere. Very good and varied breakfast, continental and English. Wonderful, modern SPA.

The Front of the hotel do not appear as something extraordinary but it fits in a nice original way into the surroundings. Inside the hotel is really pleasant with a very helpfull staff.

Eating plentifull breakfast out to the broad and calmfull road with the view to one of the many historical sanatoriums is a good start of the day. The Hotel is also close to the old Montecatini Terme situated on the top of the nearby mountain, were you can run or take the old cabletrain for the beautifull climb. The trip to the old city is a must when staying in Motecatini Terme; from here you can see some great areas between Florence an Pisa.

The room of the hotel we had was excellent; a lot of original italian colors and with space enough for three. We had the opportunity to enjoy the small pool as well, though sometime it was a little overcrowded in the hot hours.

We were eating dinner three times at this very italian hotel, and had the best food with so nice service and stories of the meal we were going to eat. Thank you for that, it was a very nice start of our trip to Italy and Corsica.
