“Don't let the negative reviews put you off”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 September 2013

Just returned from a week at the Regina in Montecatini. Before we left I had become really worried from reading so many negative reviews so I was pleasantly surprised. Please don't be put off.
Check in was fast, friendly and efficient. Our room - 208 - was spacious, light and clean. We had paid for an upgrade to a room with a balcony - this room had 2 balconies! The bathroom was spotless and was kept that way throughout our stay. Fresh towels and toiletries were provided each day.
The pool looked fantastic and was always very quiet with plenty of sunbeds available. The water was very cold but you didn't notice that once you started swimming.
The public rooms were comfortable enough and free Wi-Fi was available. The bar was a bit dated without much atmosphere.
What we had been most worried about was the food because some of the reviews were truly awful. What a surprise we had. Breakfast was pretty typical of a continental hotel - cereals, croissant, bread rolls, ham, cheese, scrambled eggs, yoghurt, fresh fruit. All self service so as much as you wanted. Lots of juices and tea or coffee. At breakfast you were asked to make your choices for dinner.
Dinner was 5 courses starting with a salad table with lettuce, shredded carrot, beetroot, tomatoes, peppers, cauliflower florets, slices of aubergine etc. Then antipasti - maybe a small piece of quiche or something on toast, then the pasta or soup course e.g. lasagne or penne with tomato sauce or a different soup each evening. Then the main course - e.g. veal escalope with green beans, roast turkey with roast potatoes. Then a dessert - not always great but an exceptionally good crème caramel. The waiting staff were unfailingly charming and helpful.
Finally the location of the hotel is great - just a few minutes from the funicular up to the old town or a few minutes stroll down to the shops of the new town.
So all in all it was very much better than I expected.

Room Tip: Rooms on the second floor were all fine.

Dear Guests,
thanks for your review on the website. I really appreciate it when people stand up and tell their opinion even if this is in contrast with what has been previously stated by other clients. thanks for your support, there is nothing else than is as good as being supported by guests.......especially in "hard times", as somebody else before me said...

We stayed here for the 3rd week in September with Newmarket Travel on a “Dinner, Bed and Breakfast” basis. Despite being wary having read previous mixed reviews we were extremely happy with our stay in this lovely old hotel. Our first floor suitably aged high ceilinged room was kept spotlessly clean, as was the roomy bathroom. Comfortable beds and period lighting units completed the ambience. The air conditioning was off but was offered if needed, we preferred to have the large window open during the night. Our room overlooked the parking area though, so some noise from coaches and passing traffic out on the road was inevitable. On arrival in the early afternoon we found the door on one of the bedside cupboard units hanging off when opened. On our way out for an exploratory stroll around the local area we reported this damage to reception. We returned two hours later to find the errant door hinge completely fixed and secure – most impressive. Reception staff were excellent throughout our stay providing cheerful, friendly assistance at all times of the day. The hardworking Restaurant staff were friendly, cheerful and very, very helpful. We found the quality of the food was excellent, varied, and nicely served. Some of the tastes were lost in translation, but very tasty nevertheless. Pasta dishes were beautifully soft in good sauces, and the meat courses excellent. Feeding so many people at the same time in their two-roomed restaurant so well was quite an achievement despite the occasional delay between courses. The Regina is very conveniently situated for the town, the terme and the funicular railway to Montecatini Alto village. The Hotel’s 1930’s style lift is great fun !

After reading the reviews on this site, we were very worried having chosen this hotel to stay in on a recent holiday with Newmarket Holidays, but feel that the reviews are very unfair and do not represent a true opinion of the hotel. To advise people not to stay there is very unjust and I would urge people not to let these comments by others put you off.We really had no criticisms about the hotel except that the cafe by the pool closes very early when people are still sitting by the pool. The hotel had lots of character and a lovely pool area to sit around with plenty of sun loungers. Could find no fault with our room either, both bedroom and bathroom were very clean and with the added bonus of a fridge to keep drinks cool and we were lucky to also have a balcony. Someone once commented that if you had a room at the front the traffic was very noisy and you could not sleep, well with air conditioning you should keep your windows and doors closed and if this is done you would not hear any noise whatsoever. Also one review said that the air conditioning was erratic. It is controlled by reception and if you either want it switched on or off, you only have to ring down to reception and they will set it to what you want, no problem whatsoever.. Another review said there was no lift, I don't know how they can say this when there is a lift in reception! Don't believe all that you read.

As for the food, again the comments are very unjust. They are giving you a typical Italian meal and in Italy the meat course is not the main course as in England and you should not expect to get a plateful with 2 veg as some people seem to expect, also would you need it when 3 courses come before this course! The meal consisted of 5 courses (you would not get that at home) and there was a good choice with some lovely dishes being served, The soups and pasta were very enjoyable and it had a good salad bar. For desert there was no choice and yes it was disappointing to be served ice cream and water melon, but on the other nights we were served some lovely tiramisu, creme caramel and gateau. One of our party is on a gluten free diet and they looked after her very well, cooking her special dishes just for her. The staff in the restaurant were wonderful. They worked very hard, as probably the ones in the kitchen did too, and were always very cheerful, polite and helpful.

Please do not take too seriously the bad reviews about the food, the hotel cannot please everyone.

I would agree though that Carolyn our tour rep was pretty hopeless, gave us no information about Montecatini at all, if you asked her a question she usually replied she did not know and also gave us alot of wrong information.

dear guests,
thanks for the time that you spent writing your comment on the web site. I would also like to thank you for the nice words that you used to described our effort to make everything perfect everyday, for everybody. As I always say we want to make people feel as individuals, we do not want them to feel as numbers. People want to be remembered by someone, people want to be part of memories, people want to have good memories. People want to be special, at least some days of the year, on their birthday, on their anniversary, on their holiday. this is what we try to do. I am glad that someone reply to our way of life with a large smile in a kind hearted manner. I am also glad that not only people who are not happy with the service that they receive write a comment on the internet, but also people who are happy spend sometime to share their feelings with the web community. so, people who think different, stand up and give your opinion.....!!
cheers

2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 September 2013

My husband and I have just returned from a Newmarket holiday to Portofino, Florence and Tuscany staying at this hotel. The places we visited were lovely but the same could not be said about the hotel.
Our room was "ok" but the shower was only 18 inches wide so you had to stand sideways and the smell from the drain in the floor was disgusting. We had to keep the door shut all the time to keep the smell out of the bedroom. We were awoke at 6.30am every morning by a gardener with a machine collecting leaves.
The travel rep Carolyn was hopeless she couldn't even pronounce the names of the resorts in the area and when we went on trips she got off the coach and started to walk right away before anyone had even got off the coach. Some people were older and couldn't keep up.
The main problem was the terrible food. My husband and I have stayed in a lot of 4* hotels many of them in Italy and have never had such disgusting food. Normally we have a choice of three mains, one being a meat, one a fish and one a vegetarian, not here. On most evenings there were two meats sometimes they were both pork, no fish and the third dish was fried eggs and tomato sauce and on another evening fried eggs and courgettes. There was only one vegetable and on most nights no potatoes. The one night we did have potatoes we didn,t have any vegetables. The deserts were always called "the speciallity of the grand hotel regina" one night it was a slice of water melon and on two nights it was a slice of icecream cut from a block. Also everyone had to go down to dinner at 7pm and they didn't have enough staff to cope with this arrangement. Not everyone wants to eat this early especially if they have only just got back from a day out at 6pm. This is not exceptable in a 4* hotel.
I have looked at all the reviews on tripadvisor and have found that this has been going on for the whole season with no improvements which just shows that is not a one off week and that they have no intention of making improvements.
This was our first holiday with Newmarket and will certainly be our last. I will also be telling as many people as possible not to travel with Newmarket. The company we usually travel with is much more professional.

Room Tip: I advise you to avoid this hotel

We too were rather concerned about the reviews of this Hotel before we embarked on our holiday but were determined to keep an open mind! Here are our plus and minus points:

Plus points:

On arrival the Hotel looked imposing and is well located (close to Funicolare up to Montecatini Alto) with an attractive outside area and pool
Martina on Reception was personality plus and will play a big( happy!) part in our memory of our stay at the hotel. We always found her to be efficient and effective
Waiting staff were always very happy, friendly and efficient
Housekeeping was excellent - we were very impressed with the chamber maid who looked after our room (303)

Minus points:
Our twin bedded double room was very small ( overlooking the park)
Inefficient air conditioning control - therefore sleeping was uncomfortable - opening window not an option because of mosquitoes!
Noise - walls were very thin so woken several times nightly by our neighbours flushing toilet!
also by fellow guests in adjoining rooms and in corridors late at night (and early morning!!)
6.30am noisy start of park maintenance - lawn mowers, strimmers, leaf blowing etc
Evening meals were adequate, varied, edible but unimaginative - and probably not what we would expect of a hotel with 4 stars ( Breakfast was fine!)

Overall the Hotel DOES have charm IS eccentric and notwithstanding our minus points we consider we were well looked after by all hotel staff with whom we came in contact!

Room Tip: We noted that 2 rooms on our floor (3rd floor) which overlooked the car park were considerably large...

dear sirs,
thanks for your time. I never make it a personal issue, but this time I can't do anything but saying thanks , thanks, and again thanks for being so nice and kind to me and to all of the staff .... when I first had a look at what you wrote I could not believe how kind you had been... so there is nothing else left to say that we will definitely try to improve all of our weak points because that's is the only way to really show that we care and we are looking forward to having you again here with us....
my pleasure

My wife and I spent a week at the hotel at the beginning of September as part of a Newmarket holiday.
Having read some of the recent reviews on here, there was some trepidation but we were pleasantly surprised and delighted with our stay.
Either the hotel has changed its way of working or some of the criticisms were harsh and exaggerated – I suspect a bit of both.
The hotel staff members were without exception polite, friendly and helpful. Their levels of understanding English were, not surprisingly, varied. Martina was particularly helpful when the lock jammed on our bedroom door – providing assistance and a free drink whilst the problem was remedied!
We were allocated room 110, a large double on the side of the hotel with a balcony. The air-conditioning was centrally controlled but always on when we needed it and the room spacious, comfortable and well maintained.
Dinner was a one-sitting affair usually at 7.45pm for the English guests. There were four courses every night and a salad bar as an extra. There is a choice of three separate dishes for two of the courses.
Pasta and meat play a big part in the local diet along with lentils and fresh vegetables and clearly the kitchen and the hard working serving staff take great pride in what they produce. If you expecting an abundance of potatoes with meals or don’t like pasta you will be disappointed but if you like Italian food served and cooked the Italian or Tuscan way then you will be fine.
Breakfast is typically continental with plenty of breads, cereals, Yoghurt, meats and Cheeses alongside croissant and cakes. There are scrambled eggs if you want them but if it is bacon and toast that floats your holiday early morning boat then you will be disappointed. The coffee is strong!
The pool is large and well stocked with beds. There is a poolside café too providing snacks, drinks and ice creams. Despite being close to the road it is well screened and peaceful.
Only the bar area really lacks atmosphere but in general the hotel with its quirky bric-a-brac and antiques has a definite charm.
It is superbly placed (150m) for the funicular to Montecatini Alto where there are pleasant walks and some fine lunch stops (try the Casa Gala for a couple of hours) and just a five-ten minute walk into the centre of town and its thermal waters, bars and ice cream parlours.
The resort is well placed for the trips out to Florence, Lucca and Portofino. Some tips if you are going:
In Florence head for cathedral first (the queues are huge in the afternoon) and if you have the energy then don’t just go inside, climb the dome. Tickets are bought from office number 7 in the main square not at the door.
In Portofino climb up to the church and walk beyond Brown’s Castle to the lighthouse, there are some stunning views and it is worth it. Only 40 minutes maximum.
In Lucca either walk or cycle the circumference of the old city walls above the town it is a superb amble in the sunshine.
Take insect repellant
All in all you ought to fee you have had value for money. We did.

We returned from a week with Newmarket Holidays, staying at this hotel, very tired & hungry! Our first night we didn`t get to sleep till after 2.30.am. due to a very noisey function held across the extremely busy main road at the spa.We changed our room, only to be wakened every morning at 6am by noisey garden machinery at the spa. The air conditioning was erractic and very noisey. The bathroom was quite an experience,we could sit on the toilet & have a shower at the same time! The food was of a poor quality, the worst pasta & pizza we have ever eaten, & the coffee, undrinkable!Yes it was a an interesting `Old Dame` of a building, the pool was good, the staff helpful, & Sarah the Newmarket rep. excellent, but as I have worked as a travel rep.I do wonder how this hotel got it`s 4*s!

it is amazing how, on the same day, people from the same group, experiencing the same exact things, who were given the same service, the same rooms, the same food and genuine smile, wrote two comments that are so different. One might think that one is true and one is false, but it is not the case. I think this is just the way things are because we are all different. Tell ten people to write a report on the same episode and they will all write different things, partly because of the way they would look at episode itself, partly because of the personality of each writer, and partly because of their selective memory that stricly depends on their taste. There is nothing I can do to persuade people that we always do our best to please the guests. When people come, most of the times, they are pleased with they way we take care of them. I can just tell you, potential guests to come and judge for yourselves- And also this time, I want to thank these people for spending a couple of minutes of their time even if it was for not a good comment.
thanks
