“Beautiful, but I expected more.”
Reviewed 30 October 2012

The place and the location is beautiful. The rooms are a bit small, but fine, and get quite hot in the summer. The breakfast is made of only sweets (cakes, biscuits) that taste nice, however I was not overwhelmed. We had our breakfast outside and had amazing views of the farm, what was the best part. All in all, it is a good guesthouse, but nothing special. Also do not expect to be offered to have a walk along the farm or even to do it by yourself. Also, do not expect much interaction with the owners. They are kind and help you with whatever you ask, but they are also busy with their day by day activities.

We were looking for a place to stay in Tuscany at a reasonable price that gave us a little peak into real life and that is exactly what we found! This place blew us away! The views are gorgeous, the location is perfect, the room are clean and kept up very nicely but the best part, hands down, we're the people. Giacomo was the most helpful hospitable host and the dinner the family made was the best we had on our entire trip.

We couldn't have asked for anything more, really a wonderful relaxing place to stay!

We sort of chose this quickly on a last minute trip to come and look for property in Italy. Our experience was not like the other reviewers. Maybe we just have standards that are a little higher...not sure. First the negatives.
It started out rough when we arrived. Their website says check in is to be between 4:00- 7:00pm. We were coming from the Amalfi Coast and left in good time to make that but got caught up in a bad traffic jam outside Naples. I quickly got on my phone and emailed the Inn to let them know we would likely be at least 30 min late from what I could figure. When I didn't hear back from them I sent a text to the cell number. I was trying to avoid calling due to the cost from my US phone. When I still did not hear back I called and someone answered in Italian and we tried with our limited Italian to explain but she rattled something in Italian and just hung up. When we arrived in Montepulciano it was dark and our GPS took us everywhere but their place! After endlessly trying to find it we pulled over and called again and she just said 5 min in english and hung up again. Was that supposed to be call back in 5 min? We just sat there and thought now what?? I was ready to just say forget it and go get a hotel. My husband called again and finally got the son who speaks english. He told us how to find the place and even with his directions we managed to miss it in the dark twice! Needless to say our nerves were a bit shot when we arrived. The owner came out and quickly scolded us for not being there earlier and notifying them we were going to be late! I snapped back at him that we emailed, texted, and called three times and got hung up on twice and if that wasn't good enough so sorry! I'm not sure what more we could have done to tell them other than send a message from heaven but I have not figured out to do that yet! Not the best way to greet your guests and make them feel welcome. I was ready to leave at that point but my husband was tired so we stayed. We opted for the apartment after seeing our room because it was so small we would not be able to move with our suitcases in it. ( we travel with carryon only!) The Apartment was nice and large but had a horrible smell to it. We slept with the window open to air it out even though it was cold. The bed is hard but most are in Italy so we have learned to just deal with it. The pillow were really hard so we slept on our airline pillows. Again, that is normal for Italy and doesn't necessarily reflect the quality of the hotel. I have stayed and many places in Italy though that understand that Americans like softer beds and pillows and will offer extra pillows or an extra pad for the bed.
We didn't really eat much of the breakfast because we are not fans of sweets for breakfast and prefer protein. We usually just had a bite of the breakfast pie and coffee and went up in the town for breakfast.
Wireless was spotty at best and never worked in our room. We would have to wrap up in a blanket at night and sit outside in the cold to get on. That was a real hassle because we were looking at properties and every night the realtor would send us new ones to look at and it was way to much data for our phones so we needed wireless and our computers to be able to look at the pictures.
Now for the good. The location is perfect right outside the city a mile or so. It was very quick to go up into Montepulciano to shop or eat and parking was never an issue right outside the city gate. The owner did warm up the next day and was very helpful with restaurant recommendations, directions, and any questions you may have. It is a working farm and he seems to try to make himself available in the morning to help with his guests plan for the day.
The place was well kept and clean but note you need to bring your own bar soap and hairdryer.
I have read that many of the guests love the dinners with the mother but that was not available when we were there because there were only two sets of guests. I understand that completely, but maybe our overall experience would have felt differently had we participated in that.

We stayed at Agriturismo Le Caggiole for six nights in late September 2012 and were extremely pleased with every aspect of our experience. Our room and ensuite bathroom were spacious and clean, the bed was big and comfortable, and our hosts (Giacomo and his mother, Ornella) were kind and generous. Free WIFI was a nice touch as well, since we were anxious to communicate with our two young children while we were away during our 10th anniversary vacation. The moment we stepped out of our rental car, Giacomo pulled up on his tractor to say hello and tell us how to find his mother, who would show us to our room. We later found out that Giacomo was busy working to bring in all the grapes from his vineyards before the weather changed. Agriturismo Le Caggiole is a working farm, and Giacomo told us all about his yearly 'schedule' – which months he needs to harvest the grapes, harvest the olives, prune the olive trees, collect honey from honeybees, etc. He really only gets one month or so of "free time" a year! And in spite of his busy schedule, he always greeted us with a friendly smile and went out of his way to advise us on which scenic roadways to take and which restaurants would provide the most delicious food for reasonable prices.

We weren't able to communicate as easily with his mother, Ornella, simply because our Italian is very rudimentary. However, she was very kind and patiently listened to every attempt we made to tell her how wonderful her homemade breakfast cakes were. And speaking of breakfast, the farm-fresh jams and honey were incredible. Did I mention her breakfast cakes? AMAZING. There were two or three to choose from each morning, and they were usually still warm from the oven. Some of the cakes we had during the week included apple, pine nut (she patiently taught us the word for pine nut: "pinola"), chocolate, prune and lemon, in which you could see the finely shredded fresh lemon zest. These cakes were accompanied by some of the richest coffee we've ever had, as well as fresh fruit from the farm (our knives sliced through the pears like butter), fresh baked cookies, granola and yogurt. Breakfast was a pure delight each and every morning.

The farm itself is beautiful, with great views over the Tuscan countryside, and there are at least two terraces for the guests to use. We spent several evenings on the terraces drinking Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and snapping pictures of the hillside. The farm is conveniently located only about five minutes from Montepulciano itself, but feels like it is far out in the country. After long days exploring the scenic towns and farmland, we always returned to a freshly made bed and clean towels for the next day.

If you're looking for a good place to base your hill town travels in Tuscany, Agriturismo Le Caggiole is an excellent choice.

My husband and I had the privilege of staying at Le Caggiole for three days as part of our recent honeymoon travels to Italy. We were both extremely impressed with the location (just outside Montepulciano in a stunningly scenic area), room (charming facility that had everything we needed, along with a wonderful view), service (Giacomo and Ornella are fabulous hosts), and lovely breakfast (plenty of freshly baked goods daily, compliments of Ornella). It was a pleasure chatting with Giacomo every morning, and he always had some great recommendations for places to visit and the best driving routes to take - all very much appreciated on our first visit to Tuscany! We would recommend Le Caggiole to anyone looking for a charming, authentic, and personalized Agriturismo experience.

We travelled from Rome via Sienna to Montepulciano for a 3 night stay at Le Caggiole. Despite the exact co-ordinates provided by the owner, Giacomo, prior to our arrival, our GPS failed to find the location. We phoned Giacomo and he kindly drove to meet us and guide us the short distance to the farm.

We booked the room il Maniscalco based on the photos on their site - with a beautiful view from our window of the olive trees and moon. The room was spacious with lovely antique furniture and a big, comfy bed. The bathroom was spacious with shower and separate bath. The water pressure was a little low and temperature not always stable, with some leakage onto the tiles - which I'm sure Giacomo has already fixed as everything there is well maintained and thought out.

Although it was August we did not need aircon and the fan provided was great for ventilation. As there are insect screens on the windows we could also get good air all night.

Breakfast was a simple spread of fresh fruit, Italian "toast", jams, muesli, yoghurt, and home-made fruit tarts/cakes (different types each day). There is a drinking water tap out near the barn that allowed for fresh water supply during our stay.

We were lucky enough to enjoy a dinner prepared by Giacomo and his mother during our stay - authentic steak Florentine. It was the largest steak we have ever seen! Of the 4 couples at dinner, only the Italian couple managed to finish their steak. It was a lovely night of food, wine and shared travel stories.

We also enjoyed the communal terrace area for an evening picnic by moonlight.

Giacomo and his family were very friendly, helpful and full of suggestions on how best to enjoy this beautiful part of Italy. We will definitely be back to stay again.

Room Tip: Get up for a walk at sunrise - stunning!

+ room, very comfortable and cozy, especially new bathroom (with tube and shower)
+ house, garden, community area: very lovely and perfect for picnic
+ homemade cakes from mama are delicious (5 different cakes for breakfast!)
+ nice view
+ rather close to montepulciano
+ giacomo was very accomodating and fair: we booked 3 nights in advance but changed our mind, to stay only 2 a few days earlier. giacomo did not insist on paying part of the third night (even though cancellation policy is different)

- too close to the road (therefore somewhat noisy for an agriturismo)
- for dinner there: small chance that there are enough other people (see other reviews). to be fair it has to be said, that this is communicated by giacomo
- breakfast only sweet food (no meat or cheese or eggs)
- owner is very polite and friendly but too reserved, you wont get any information whitout asking

overall the positive aspects are overweighting. however we saw some other agriturismos (two) in tuscany whitout any negative points and incl pool and kitchen to use in the same price range.
