La Grencaia Bed & Breakfast
Ranked #31 of 44 Montepulciano B&B and Inns
Reviewed 23 August 2012

My family and a few friends (three couples with 5 young children) just spent two weeks in August at the Grencaïa. We have rented the entire house, which is very charming, nicely decorated, and surrounded by hectares of nature (without any immediate neighbours). This is fantastic is you are looking for nature and quiet holidays. The only downside is that you need to drive for about 15-210 minutes to get to a supermarket.

The house has been very recently refurbished with taste and offers three large rooms which can each accomodate a couple and young children (through a mezzanine or other adjacent small rooms). We used the fourth room for the elder children. The swimming pool is just great and refreshing while it is often 35°C or more outside.

The kitchen is great in terms of size, and you can on top of this benefit from vegetables from the property (spices, excellent tomatoes, basilic, etc.).

The owner is very kind and discrete. He takes care of the garden maintenance on a daily basis (checking the pool, wtareing the plants, etc.). He can arrange for meals at the house if requested in advance. He could also arrange the presence of a very kind housekeeper for us, on average three hours a day, which was really helpful with all the children.

Holidays were just great!

Room Tip: I loved our room, located on the upper floor with a mezzanine, an en-suite bathroom with bath and to...

Had a very rewarding and fruitful 3 night stay in La Grencaia. In fact, I booked with some trepidation as there was only one solo review on TA about La Grencaia, but the hosts, Carla and Franco, came out very helpful and resourceful all the way prior to my arrival with many detailed replies regarding all my queries – I found it very reassuring indeed as it was my first trip to Italy with my wife, and in fact my first trip of any kind to Europe where driving was required. The accommodation is just as it appears on the images given by the hosts on their webpage – clean, beautifully decorated, and each room has its own character (there are 4 rooms altogether, one of which could be self-catered with a very charismatic fully equipped country kitchen). In general, the place I think has a fantastic down-to-earth luxury feel to it with beautiful touches everywhere oozing character and charm. Our room (Camera La Torre) has extremely high ceiling which explains why there is enough space to fit in a mezzanine area with one extra bed. The room has beautiful views of nearby greenery, with a very charming toilet to match!

The breakfast each morning was scrumptious with all kinds of fresh produce from nearby producers (fresh and aged pecorino and freshly shaved prosciutto, to name a few), and Carla’s mother actually made it the more memorable by making an apple cake for us one morning! And for sure there are the resident pets, in particular a very adorable and handsome cat by the name of Vento which has a very strong liking of me, and always in the mood to play with me whenever I was around. Badly missing it right now. For us, Vento has to be one reason why I would want to make a second trip to the accommodation and so for cat lovers this is definitely not something to be missed. The pool area is also very charming as well.

All in all, it was a fantastic stay and I love every moment of it. Just a word regarding the location of the property – even though it’s barely a 15 minute drive from the township of Montepulciano, La Grencaia feels somewhat very isolated as it’s located on an unpaved dirt road off Via Della Montagna (the latter being also primarily an unpaved road) . The accommodation was difficult to find because there was no signage at all pointing you to the property. We struggled to find it so we ended up going to nearby Monticchiello for our scheduled dinner booking at Osteria La Porta. The restaurant proprietor graciously assisted us by calling Carla and Franco on our behalf and we were eventually picked up by our hosts upon finishing our dinner and they led us to their accommodation. If you happen to be heading to La Grencaia from Montepulciano like us, make sure to drive slowly (you have to anyway because it’s almost an unpaved road right from the beginning) on Via Della Montagna and look to your left until you reach the aforesaid unnamed and unpaved dirt road with a signage that says ‘Montauto’ – turn left here, follow the road and after another bumpy ride for another 5-10 minutes you will eventually get there. It’s worth it though!

By the way, sure to visit La Foce Gardens (5 minute drive from La Grencaia), which was opened on Wednesdays only when I visited in October.
