“Perfect hideaway”
Reviewed 18 September 2016 for a stay in September 2016

We stayed at Poggio Etrusco for three nights in September. It's a beautiful haven in the Tuscan countryside with a rustic, bohemian edge. Wild olives, tomatoes, and figs grow in the gorgeous verdant gardens, and the house is a beautiful old building restored with great charm. Two things make Poggio Etrusco standout. Firstly it is ideally located for some of tuscany's great treasures - the hill towns of San Gimgiano and Montepulciano, the stunning drives through the Val d'orcia, and the natural spas of Bagna Vignoni. And secondly, the warm hospitality extended by Johnny and family. They are perfect hosts, warm and welcoming, and inspiring with their love of Tuscany. They are also incredibly kind and accommodating and made us feel very comfortable theoughout our stay. We will certainly pass their way again if we are fortunate enough to be back in Tuscany.

“Pleasant stay in beautiful surroundings”

We stayed here one week. The location is convenient to several popular towns - Montepulciano (30 min), Pienza (30 min), Cortona (50 min), Montelcino (1 hour). The landscaping/gardens are lush and green with a lovely view over a valley and the location quiet and calm. The apartments are nicely furnished with antiques, feel very authentic Tuscan (villa is 700 years old) and spacious. Wifi good. Breakfast adequate. Johnny John the owner very helpful and friendly with tips. Only a few minor minuses are the pool is in the shade and so was too cold all week to swim. There are thermal baths 10 minutes away though. Dogs barking at night, need to close windows to sleep. (Owners do have two dogs, good to know in case you don't like dogs. They are very friendly though. Several sweet cats too.) Finally the mosquitoes were horrendous in number and ferociousness, even with repellent on. After a few evenings we were all bit up and could no longer sit outside on patios. It would have helped to water the plants less frequently and put a lot of citronella candles and torches around the patios. All in all though a good value.

“A lovely working farm”

We stayed in the room that was available for one night. The room was very nice with a private entrance. The hosts were very accommodating. They showed us olive picking and we followed them to the facility that makes their olive oil. The breakfast was very nice. A charming couple. I do agree, the room available for rent is at a below ground level so it is a little damp but it was fine.

“Island of peace near Montepulciano”

Thanks to my great hosts Pamela and Johnny, I was able to recharge my batteries in the beautiful peaceful countryside just south or Montepulciano. I stayed in one of the apartments which was well furnished and comfortable and while I didn't take her cooking school, I spoke to 4 americans who had a wonderful time (even the men) and was able to profit from their labors by sampling a bit of their fresh handmade egg pasta and a dessert. The property comes complete with a vineyard from which they make their own wine and olive trees for artisanal extra virgin olive oil. Just a short drive away is Montepulciano, Cortona, Lago di Trasimeno and a bit further, Siena, so it is ideally located for a multi day exploration of Tuscany.
