“Pleasant hotel near the city center”
Reviewed 28 October 2012 via mobile

We stayed two nights in October. Our room was roomy and comfortable and included a large patio. The hotel staff was very helpful and the breakfast included hot eggs cooked to order and coffee or cappuccino, something not typically included given our two weeks in a number of properties. The hotel is located just inside the main gate, so it's a liitle bit of a walk to the major sites - about 10 minutes. We didn't mind given the over-all quality of the hotel. It was also very quiet. No aiir-conditioning, which we found the norm in Tuscany. It was fairly cool during our stay here, but just be aware that if it's hot, you are going to be hot too. No ceiling fan either.

This lovely old hotel is more like a home with lots a places to sit and wonderful art books to look at.We had a large room on the top floor (about 50 steps up!) with a balcony to sit on and fantastic views to lake Trasimeno. Superb breakfasts of real bread, local cheeses, ham with freshly squeezed orange juice and fresh fruit and cakes. The owners were most friendly and helpful and they also had a few parking spaces. We shall hope to return

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony. It may be a hard climb up if you are in your 70s but it is well worth...

I was really looking forward to my stay at this hotel, their photos made it seem very quaint and charming but not so. The room was shabby and the beds where the worst we had, lumpy with springs poking you in the back!! The bathroom was spacious but the shower stall was so small you couldn't move in it and there was a sewer smell eminating from the sink on occassion. Breakfast was good; nice to be offered the choice of eggs. Also not mentioned is all the stairs, while not difficult for me but a bit hard for my 80 year old mother. Defintely over priced for what you get. Loved Montepulciano!!

A lovely old building converted to an hotel in Montepulciano, a fabulous hilltop wine town in Umbria, near Tuscan border.
Those who elect to stay in hilltop towns have to put up with rather cramped conditions for obvious reasons, but not here. Spacious bedrooms and bathrooms and interior spaces. No lift so a little lugging of luggage around is involved, and no offers from staff. Good breakfast and most unusually eggs cooked to order.

This is a pleasant hotel with an old world feel to it. Our room had a lovely terrace with an amazing view and we spent a few hours reading and lollygagging there. The bed was comfortable and large. The bathroom was big also with a shower stall and a bathtub which was perfect for a late afternoon soak. Everything was clean.

Breakfast was ample but not varied and the service was excellent. The WiFi was weak and I couldn't make a connection in the common areas where the signal was strongest. There was no signal in the bedrooms.

This appears to be a family run hotel and the service is very friendly. It offers excellent value.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a terrace.

Very nice, charming , family run hotel.
Probably one of the best value in Montepulciano too. It was about 90 euros a night when we were there in April.
I had contacted them prior to getting there, as I was planning to propose to my girlfriend while staying in Montepulciano.

They were very helpful and booked us a large room with beautiful terrace overlooking the Tuscan hills. Plus they also offered a complimentary bottle of wine.

And once we got there, they were also great help with that manual transmission rental car we had... A long story, but I was so glad they could help... :-)

Room was very comfortable and location is perfect (though Montepulciano is pretty small, so unless you are way out of the city walls, any location must be good...)
Overall it was a very pleasant stay and I recommend staying there.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with terrace overlooking the Tuscan hills if you can.

The staff (family) are warm and welcoming. The rooms are fairly basic but very large and have amazing views on a pleasent balcony. The house in which the hotel is situated is old and full of character. The breakfast was lovely. We wished we had stayed longer. The only downside was that the bed was a bit old/uncomfortable - but then again I slept just the same!! And, the real benefit is after walking up from the bus stop - you don't have to keep climbing up to the centre of the old town so it's pretty convenient yet still has the character of being in the old town (just inside the gate).

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony or a terrace facing room

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Behind the Medicean column there is the Hotel Il Marzocco, the oldest in town. It was built in 1500 as a farm of the nearby convent. In 1860 it became a hotel and since the early 1900s it has been run by the same family. The hotel looks like a large house where the atmosphere of the old times is still kept. Its bedrooms open on wide lounges that, like the reading room and the sitting room, are furnished with genuine XIX century pieces. Some bedrooms have balconies or terraces with a view on the valleys, other ones have their windows over the Renaissance houses of the old town. The hotel has had important guests like actors, writers, politicians, all of whom are fond of the great view from its terraces. A free parking area is available, as well as comfortable relaxing spaces and a wide dining room where breakfast is served from a rich buffet with home-made bread and cakes, jams and pies. Among the roses of the garden, the Canada creeper climbs until the terraces and creates a pergola up to the roof, at first green in summer, than all red in September and yellow during the autumn. Red geraniums at the windows, together with the old lace curtains, add to the building a perfectly romantic touch. Wi-Fi Connection. We accept pets. Free Indoor garage for motorbikes and bicycles. ... more   less
