Description: The Osteria ACQUACHETA, open for over 25 years, has retained the characteristics of the old Tuscan taverns. The kitchen, sharing tables, one glass for water and wine, and not least an authentic welcome and true, typically Tuscan, make it a local flavor ... you feel at home ... Managers, CHIARA and GIULIO, have maintained intact over the years the tradition of pasta, bread, cakes and homemade preserves to which are added succulent steaks cooked Florentine embers of wood. Local, small and very popular, is located in the upper part of the old town, a few steps from the main square.

This place has a big reputation and lots of hype and accolades, but all of the attention is well deserved. This is a truly great dining experience. It was so good we went twice during our three days in the Montepulciano area. Although its signature dish is the steak florentine, the restaurant has an extensive menu. The prices are very reasonable (actually much better than just about any comparable place and the house wine prices are crazy low) and the quality is very high. One of the pasta dishes we had was among the best we had in Italy and some of the starters were also very good. In the end though, you have to get the steak. Is it the best steak I have ever had? No, but it is really, really good and worth it for the presentation and experience (including the owner bringing the actual raw piece of meat to your table before it is grilled). The family style seating adds to the terrific ambiance. You have to make a reservation. I saw people turned away without it.

I ate a ton of good food in Montepulciano, but this place was also an experience. You will share a table with other people. I ended up sitting next to someone who lives one town over from where a I grew up, thousands of miles away. Crazy!

This was our last meal in Southern Tuscany and we could not have been more pleased! The food was perfect simple Tuscan fare done as it should be. Giulio's pride in his work, great product and personal attention to each patron were evident and made the experience memorable. The family style seating adds a bit of adventure to the meal--we sat with Florentines who didn't speak a word of English (nor we Italian) and another couple from the U.S. By the end of the meal we felt like we were sitting with old friends with bellies full of wonderful Tuscan cuisine.

Family style seating brings diners together who begin as strangers and leave as friends. Our table mate happened to be a local hotel manager and he took charge for us when it came to ordering our meal. Funghi laden pasta followed by a huge steak (fit for all of us to share) cooked to perfection. My new quest is to find a recipe for the amazing dessert of fresh riccotta cheese covered with a chocolate chestnut sauce. (If anyone finds that...please let me know!)

We found the food to be average to good. We don't eat meat and perhaps meat eaters are more positive as this restaurant focuses on meat. Otherwise we liked the concept and enjoyed sharing table with other guests.
