“Beautiful. Already planning our next trip back!”
Reviewed 17 July 2011

We were looking for an authentic Italian experience off the beaten tracks of Tuscany but at the same time wanted to stay in a very comfortable and fancy hotel. We looked for quite some time until we found the perfect balance in the form of Palazzo Seneca where we spent 5 marvelous nights from 4 to 9 July 2011. The hotel is located in Norcia, in Umbria, a region south of Tuscany. The city is known for the best salamis, hams and truffles in Italy. We’ve tasted them all and they are truly delicious!

The Palazzo Seneca hotel is housed in a 16th century building tastefully refurbished and fully modernized in which comfort, modern design and old stones are perfectly married. The owners and staff of the hotel are extremely kind, friendly and helpful and at the end of our stay we felt truly at home and sad to leave this oasis. While the hotel itself does not have a pool, a pool is available to guests outside the hotel. This was really the only major let-down of the hotel, as we had to walk for about 10 minutes to reach the pool. However, the hotel features a SPA at its underground, offering massages, saunas, a relaxation room, and a Jacuzzi. If you’re looking to get some tanning done, there is a terrace available on the second floor of the hotel, with a breathtaking view of the mountains around Norcia, and, most importantly, very comfortable deck chairs. Breakfast is served in the hotel’s own restaurant, right next to the reception. It features some of the best of Norcia’s delicacies. Jams, pecorino, salami, it’s all there, in addition to the already extensive selection laid out on the buffet (bread, cakes, pastries, croissants, eggs). If you decide to eat breakfast there, make sure to ask for Ginseng coffee with your breakfast. I’d never tried it before, and one of the staff made the suggestion, which I don’t regret. If you would like some quiet and a beautiful setting, both in terms of the hotel and of he surrounding nature, I would highly recommend this hotel. I’m already planning to go back!

Stayed at Palazzo Seneca as part of a package with International Kitchen (as we had four cooking classes with chef Flavio Faedi). The hotel is architecturally fantastic - a combination of historic with modern luxury. We upgraded to a room with a balcony - well worth it to really enjoy the environs. All rooms were very clean, private and quiet - felt the only guests in the place (which we weren't). Shower - with dual rain showerheads - also opened onto a private terrace via french doors. All was made even better by the generous hospitality of the owners - the Bianconis - and the hotel staff. Felt like a home away from home. And then there was the food - lovingly prepared by Flavio - a true purist - taking regional cuisine to a higher, yet more basic level.
Only down side (which was a minor one, given all the sights to see in Umbria - Spoleto, Assisi, Castellucio, truffle hunting, pig farm, rafting) was that the pool referenced on their web site isn't actually on the property - it's a 7 minute walk down to another hotel (also owned by the family), and while refreshing, isn't to the same luxurious standards as the hotel. Would be great for kids, though, as it's at the local rec center where there is also a small game area. Rec center is also the location for the workout gym and an enclosed, large pool with some swim lanes.

Room Tip: The suites with balconies are well worth the extra $$.

Norcia is an excellent base for seeing this part of Umbria and has strong historical links. Palazzo Seneca is the perfect place to stay. It has all the luxury of a Relais and Chateaux hotel but is informal. The Bianconi family have a real hands on attitude to running the hotel and nothing is any trouble. There is a small but prefectly good spa-Jacuzzi, Sauna, steeam room-for guests. The family also own the Hotel Salicone (tenns, indooor/outdoor pools etc which Palazzo guests can use and the Grotta Azzura restaurant opposite the hotel if you would prefer simpler cuisine on evening. We had the Eremo (=hermitage) room which is worth the extra. All in all a pleasure to stay there

The Palazzo is spectacular. The common rooms are fantastic, and the rooms are well-appointed with lovely details. (It's worth springing for the extra 25 euros to upgrade from the smallest rooms since the next level is quite a bit larger.) Breakfast is lovely, but you have to know you can order all sorts of things like eggs from the kitchen. And that's the problem. Service is underwhelming. There are simply not enough people there to do the job. We had one harried waitress at breakfast dealing with 9 tables. Reception had one woman dealing with four groups of guests wanting different things.

The room was spacious, comfortable, elegant and quiet. The hotel is in an old palace and has several common rooms with lots of character. The staff was very friendly and helpful. For example, when we expressed interest in purchasing truffles, a staff member offered to take us to a shop and helped translate and get us a discount. The owner was eager to share his advice on things to do in the area. He pointed us to an evening vesper service in the local church and gave us detailed and specific advice on local hikes. The restaurant is excellent but not inexpensive.

Palazzo Seneca's staff made sure to exceed all expectations. We were treated like royalty. It was my partner's birthday, and I asked them ahead of time to please just let the restaurant know. They were so kind and cooked him a special birthday cake! The chef also came out several times during the meal to talk to us about the dishes and really make us feel very special. The hotel owner also came over to our table and sung happy birthday, and chatted with us for about 15 minutes about the property and Norcia. This really exceeded all expectations we could have.

The hotel itself was also perfectly lovely. Exceptional grounds, which provide the perfect place for relaxing in the sunlight. The rooms were spacious and we had a small balcony to sit and enjoy some wine upon.

The hotel itself was lush and elegant. It looked like the luxurious Italian family that lived there had just stepped out for the day. (When we first entered, I told my partner that I felt like I had stepped inside an italian painting because the hotel was so well appointed). The staff also kept a day-long supply of water, biscotti, coffee and other refreshments out for all the guests to enjoy).

We came to Norcia to enjoy the delicious salumi and local meats and it did not dissappoint. The town is quite sleepy (literally you can walk from end to end in about 20 minutes), with one main square with several butcher shops off it. To all foodies out there, I highly reccomend the following: We really wanted to drink and snack on some local products, so we grabbed a couple bottle of their local beer and went around to several of the butcher shops in the square. We then offered beer to the owners and were given taste after taste of all the local products (OMG try the truffle sausage, you will not regret it). All in all, it was a really fun way to chat with some of the locals and get to experience Norcia the way that we wanted to.

Should you be travelling through the region, I would HIGHLY recommend Palazzo Seneca as a destination spot. It made you feel like you were spending the night with the family of Italian royalty and it really was an unforgettable experience along our trip. It was one of the few places on our drive throughout Italy that was not at all touristy, and is something that I reccomend for anyone looking to experience some of the authentic Italian countryside.

What a hidden gem of relaxation and peace in this lovely town. The Palazzo has been renovated and decorated exquisitely. Our room was simple though comfortable. The library is beautiful, as is the ancient fireplace room and the delightful breakfast room and drinks area. The restaurant, under exec chef, Flavio Faedi, is exceptional. His meals highlight the fabulous local produce and his considerable skills. The food and wine is complimented by the knowledgeable and friendly, yet very professional service of Mauro and Michela. The spa was a welcome treat after a couple of weeks of travel. A family-run enterprise where great care for their clients is obvious in the many small touches that make a stay outstanding. Don't miss staying here on your next visit to Italy as the area abounds with unspoiled beauty and fantastic produce. Highly recommended.
