Set in the beautiful hills a few minutes above Norcia, amidst poppy fields about to spring to life when we went at the end of May, Il Casale Degli Amici offers an unforgettable experience. We were warmly welcomed by the guy who runs the place (didn't get his name but he's a charming host, who never let the language barrier get in the way) and seated so as to look out across the glorious vista. The food was exceptional - the best we had in a week of munching our way around Umbria- pappardelle cooked perfectly al dente, a truffle-strewn lasagne unlike any we'd ever experienced and a plate of melt in the mouth lamb. Umbria is, rightly, renowned for the quality of food produced in the area and Norcia is undoubtedly the region's culinary capital, while il Casale degli Amici is its crown jewel, a restaurant like no other!
