B&B La Casa di Tufo
Ranked #12 of 54 Orvieto B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 2 November 2013

We arrived in Orvieto via train , then funicular to top of the hill then a uphill walk through old town to B&B La Casa di Tufo. When you are met at the front door by your Host "Jasmine" you know you are going to love this place. The rooms are large with 3 to choose from. The shared meeting room is used for breakfast , happy hour etc. There is free WIFI . The shower is from outer space. It is worth the price of the room. The breakfast was fresh every day and included scrambled eggs with ham , rolls , coffee or tea. Walking distance to the bus ,funicular and many tourist spots. Also bus to "Civita" is very handy. The train runs a regular schedule to and from Rome from Orvieto.

Room Tip: All 3 rooms are good size and comfortable. There is also an apartment available for longer stays. W...

We stayed in the Stella room. We only had one night but it was great. Good location. Close enough to the hilltop sights of Orvieto but away from the noise of all those other humans! Easy to find with the Maps With Me app.

La Casa di Tufo is a great home away from home for any stay -- one night or one month, which was our choice. Jasmina and her daughter are friendly and helpful with information on Orvieto and the surrounding area. The location is perfect, on a quiet street but a short walk to the town's unique museums and other attractions. We will be back next year.

I'm so happy my husband and I were able to stay here on our trip to Italy. I was really afraid we wouldn't find any affordable decent lodging, but places like La Casa di Tufo proved me wrong. Our room was really nice - it had lovely modern amenities (including a great shower) but with the charm you look for in old Italian buildings. We were given our own keys and never felt weird about coming in and out, even at night. The owner was very nice and made us great breakfasts each morning. Although not big by American standards (none of the Italian breakfasts we had were), she provides meats, cheeses and several pastries. I made myself a couple of sandwiches from these that were tasty and filling.

The best part for us, however, involved her help fixing a mess up by the hotel we had stayed at prior to coming to Orvieto. They took my driver's license when we checked in and never gave it back. We forgot until we were already on the train to Orvieto. The owner was kind enough to call them for us and have them mail my license to our hotel in Rome. I really appreciate great service like that. Can't speak highly enough about this place.

The only downsides, which in my mind aren't really downsides but might be for some people, is that you do have to go up one flight of stairs to get to your rooms (but again, this was pretty common for us) and the B&B is not right in the middle of the town. However, it was always quiet at night, which we loved. Besides, the town is small and easily walkable.

B&B La Casa di Tufo, run by a friendly and efficient proprietor, is tucked away on a quiet side street in Orvieto. We were able to find the street no problem, as it is only a few minutes walk from the Piazza della Reppublica. However, the B&B is not well marked, so keep an eye out for the street number - we walked right past it!

From the entry, you walk up the stairs to the second floor common room. We didn't spend time in this space so I cannot comment on it too much; however, I did notice lots of guidebooks and local information. It is furnished with modern IKEA-type items and is well kept.

Our room, Camera Stella, was on the third floor. This room is large for two guests by Italian standards. It had a large bed, sofa, small table with two chairs, and large mirrored wardrobe. Very quiet, with a nice window overlooking Orvieto rooftops. Again, all modern IKEA furnishings. The bathroom was very large and updated. The shower was interesting and had spa-type jets, an overhead light (burnt out), and a radio. Make sure the doors close tight, ours leaked a bit. There were only a few towels (no washcloths, but I do not think they are normally included) and they were not soft at all.

All in all, a simple and pleasant place to stay in Orvieto at a great value (75 Euro for two). The owner was very accommodating, provided GREAT dinner advice, and was flexible when we needed to depart early. She provided breakfast vouchers for a nearby bar, as we were up and gone before breakfast. The only downside was that the B&B was a bit of a hike from the Duomo and funicular for a one night stay.

We decided to stay in Orvieto for two nights and my daughter was intrigued with a place that had a truffle dog. Unfortunately they could not accommodate us in two separate rooms for the entire stay but she had a main floor apartment with two rooms that she offered us. This was great. There were two separate rooms and lots of space. The lady was super and offered us great suggestions to eat and was most accommodating. Orvieto is a wonderful place with the best food we had in Italy or have had in Italy since this is not our first trip. Breakfast was very good too. I would stay here again. The shower was wonderful and very modern with music, sprays and a nice size. Great value for the money.

Room Tip: More a bed and breakfast so not a great choice in rooms

Very nice, simple and clean B&B. Run by a friendly german woman, who also gave us good tips on restaurants, and parking (which is pretty difficult in Orvieto!). Had some trouble finding the place on arrival, the map we got from the hotel was pretty difficult to read (did not have all the street names), but managed to find it by asking the locals. The streets in Orvieto are very narrow, so drivers beware.
Very clean and our family of five fitted in nicely. Furnitures Ikea-style, simplistic and useful. Wifi worked all right.
