Nice range of salads as well as other food. You order at the counter and pay and then find a table. The salads we ordered were fresh made with good ingredients.
Quite busy and popular.

We arrived in Orvieto for a couple of nights stay and having freshened up at our hotel, headed out for gelati and a wander around with the early evening shoppers. We decided to stop off at the Cafe Montanucci for a drink before starting the search for a restaurant - it seemed like Orvieto had lots to choose from. We had a beer and a cocktail in the upper seating area out of doors. It was pleasant, offering a warm but shady place to relax. The drinks came with three different appetisers which were fantastically tasty. Encouraged by this and becoming increasingly comfortable at our table an hour later we decided to have a look at the food menu. It wasn't a massive choice but plenty to appeal to us and featured lots of local fare. In the end we opted for both opted for home made pasta though different shapes with different sauces featuring ewe's milk cheese. It was fantastic - not necessarily high end dining but a really nice meal which we remembered all our holiday. The price was reasonable too. Our only regret was that the place we went to on our second night in Orvieto wasn't nearly as good - and cost a lot more. The waiting staff were pleasant and helpful and we could have lingered all evening if we wanted. The table laden with various chocolate bars in the shop was an added though pleasant distraction on the way out! When we're back in Orvieto - and we will go back - we'll definitely go back to Cafe Montanucci.

Cafe Montanucci has great coffee and pastries all day long. They have a delicious lunch buffet of salads and frittatas if you want something quick and good, or you can have table service. They expanded a couple of years ago and now offer a light meal at dinner. It's the place to meet, outdoor seating is sufficiently protected that you can even sit outside in the early spring. Service is friendly. They are tolerant of groups with people paying separately. Internet service is available.

We arrived in Orvieto in the evening, just in time to see the rays of the setting sun warm the facade of the Duomo. After checking in to our villa, getting changed and freshening up we headed for Caffè Montanucci, which was recommended in our guide book. It was clear that people eat early here as many of the restaurants we passed were beginning to stack up their chairs. Caffè Montanucci is a large bar-cum-restaurant which was almost deserted by the time we arrived. This gave it a forlorn atmosphere, rather like that of a seaside resort in mid-winter. However we got a warm welcome from the young manager there who was very helpful in guiding us through the menu. We wanted very little to eat as we had lunched more than well some hours previously at Osteria del Conte in Montepulciano. I had a delicious asparagus soup with chips, while my partner was more than happy with his salad dish. Acceptable white wine ( Orvieto, of course!), good coffee and solicitous service contributed to a simple but very satisfactory supper. We returned a few days later to buy their home-made chocolate Easter eggs. Delicious.

Tourists to Orvieto will eventually discover that there are two major roads in town that meet perpendicularly in the center: the ceramic and art-filled Via del Duomo and the long, graceful Corsa Cavour, leading visitors from the funicular to Piazza della Repubblica, the seat of the town government.

Good trattorias, restaurants, pubs, wine bars, sandwich shops everything in between can be found somewhere along this axis as it's hard to get a bad meal in Orvieto. But none is as well known as Caffe Montanucci. And for good reason! Caffe Montanucci is somewhat of a landmark in town, boasting more than 100 years of continuous operation!

Montanucci is a favourite among locals and tourists alike for its excellent offerings and casual atmosphere. Guests choose what they would like from behind a glass counter near the entrance, order and their meals will be delivered to their table inside in one of the many rooms or in an enclosed outdoor terrace. Typical selections include everything from sandwiches and hearty salads like, rice, pasta, spelt, seafood, panzanella to hot dishes like lasagne, tortellini, risotto, meats and fish. After lunch browse the Caffe's famous selection of chocolates from around the world as well as the trademark "Pinocchio noses" pointy chocolate cones in a variety of different flavors, wrapped in colored foil...a specialty of Caffe Montanucci. .

Prices for a lunch for two is around 15-20 euro.

The food is impeccably fresh and the surroundings comfortable and clean.
