Hotel Picchio is a small hotel located outside the old town of Orvieto. However the location is close to the station which is very convenient if you're arriving by train (since the station is NOT in the old town). The hotel is also located close to the funicular, which takes you straight up to the old town. There's also a bus. I'd say the location is also good if you're arriving by car, since parking in the old town near any of the hotels there is a problem and there's no problem parking near this hotel (they also provide paid indoor parking, but you can easily park on the street right outside the hotel). So much for the location.

The hotel itself has rooms both in the main building, and in a newly-built apartment-style building across the road, which is where we stayed. The room was perfectly fine, clean, and equipped with everything needed. There were a couple of little things that could have had some attention, but nothing that would detract from your stay. There was what must have been smallest LCD television I've ever seen; considerably smaller than the wall-mounted stand it was on! We didn't use it in any case.

Breakfast, as others have mentioned, is quite different. There's the usual simple buffet-style assortment of breads and so forth. Simple, but adequate. Coffee (fresh espresso if you want) and tea are made to order. What's different is the huge array of home-baked cakes and tarts that are also part of the breakfast spread. The lady manning the breakfast and reception desk was proudly responsible for this spread. She must spend much of her day baking! This isn't a reason to choose this hotel, but it certainly is a feature.

The staff at the hotel were both very helpful and friendly. In the evening the man on duty offered an excellent suggestion for a restaurant for dinner (see other review) and in the morning the lady (mentioned above) went out of her way to help us find a couple of places we wanted to see during the day. Well done on both counts!

In summary, this is a pleasant little hotel with friendly service and conveniently located just outside the old town.

Terrible hotel, it looks like a one star hotel. Dark rooms with tiny showers, poor breakfast... terrible, I do not recommend this hotel.
The hotel is not a three stars hotel, I don´t understand the certificate of excellence.
The location is very poor,i t is not in the city center and not even in a nice place.

Room Tip: Look for another hotel

My wife and I spent a night at Hotel Picchio on our way to Florence. The location is a very short drive to beautiful Civita due Bagnoregio and as many have said extremely convenient to Orvieto via the funicular, which was pretty cool and drops you right at the lower end of town. It was especially convenient since we had a car and there is enclosed parking, and because there is breakfast. The owner works very hard to make sure you are satisfied with your stay, the room was clean, the walk to the funicular very short and simple, and the room rate excellent. Perfectly suited our purpose as a short pit stop that does all of the important things right.

My husband and I spent 2 nights at Hotel Picchio. First, it was so very conveniently close to the train station and funicular...so coming in from Firenze on train and walking to the hotel was easy, and the funicular that takes you to the top to get to Orvieto (part to look at) is just across the street from the station! We didn't want to take our luggage up the funicular and lug it around Orvieto, but preferred to stay in lower Orvieto and dump our junk...then travel UP with out any stuff weighing us down...we were very happy with that decision! We were placed in the new building...it was very clean, air conditioned, and had free wifi (my requirements). As stated in other reviews, the owner is very hospitable and goes out of her way to make you feel welcome. Her cakes are wonderful, as the room comes with free breakfast. We also had free cafe lattes and other breakfast items. For the money, this was a SUPER place to stay!

Room Tip: I suggest staying at the bottom of Orvieto and avoid having to drag luggage around at the top. But keep in mind the funicular does close at 8:30pm and that can be a bit tricky if eating out for dinner (we had to wait for the mini-bus, which was no problem...but you need to plan your time well).

Great location if you don't want to stay up top, the owner is friendly, and - as everyone else says - the breakfast cakes are delicious. I stayed in the new building, which was clean and spacious. Very good value for money.
