Wonderful! Great artifacts. You will see things you won't see anywhere else and in great conditon. Museum wasn't busy when we were there so we could wander around at our leisure.

This contains many artifacts from the site, removed for preservation. Some fantastic wall paintings, carvings and pottery.
The guide book covers both the museum and temples, and inexpensive at €5

Paestum or Poseidonia as the city was originally called, after Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea, was founded in the 6th Century BC by Greek settlers and fell under Roman rule in 273 BC. What most people don't realize about Bella Italy, is the many influences of Greece. It is one of my favourite experiences to walk the ruins of Paestum, feeling the dramatic Greek architectural influences. There are many cafes and shops at the entrance to the ruins. It's a wonderful region to explore for many reasons!

The museum holds important artifacts from the adjacent temples as well as other archeological finds nearby. I found myself wanting a bit more story or logical organization of the artifacts. That may actually exist if you can read the Italian descriptions. The museum store had English guidebooks for sale if I had wanted to carry another book around. As for the museum itself, I enjoyed seeing the recovered pottery (some similar to the artifacts from Pompei), and being able to compare the ancient burial art to that of later conquerors. If you are coming to Paestum to see the temples, by all means spend some time in the museum.

the signs are old and worn out, the archeological site is free to walk on and there are no borders. It really should be better maintained!
