Owner description: Founded by Greek colonists, the ancient city of Poseidonia dates from 600 B.C. It was abandoned for centuries, but the remarkably well-preserved Greek temples were excavated in the mid-18th century.

So may great historical places are surrounded by modern clutter. Not Paestum. The temples are in excellent condition, and set like gems in a suitable surrounding. Uncrowded, quiet. Sit on a 6th Century BC pillar, and simply let history seep by osmosis into your soul.
Paestum is off the beaten track.......thank goodness. Richly worth a visit, the images, and the ambiance, will linger like a fine perfume.

The remains of this ancient city are so extensive that you get a real sense of its scale--and the great ability of its builders.

These well preserved Greek ruins were a half hour train ride from Salerno. These are some amazing ruins to enjoy without huge crowds of tourists.

This was a long day trip from Sorrento, but it was one of the best sites we saw. We started by taking the train from Sorrento to Naples and then to Paestum. From the train station in Paestum it's a short walk to the city gate and then a pleasant walk through the countryside to the ruins themselves. I absolutely loved this site. The three main temples are absolutely amazing and many of the other ruins give you an excellent idea of how the city was laid out. When you go to Pompeii or Herculaneum, you do sense how they were a real city, but they are so built up around, especially Herculaneum, that it's just not the same. Here in Paestum you get a sense of how the city was laid out in antiquity and the surrounding countryside. We spent about 3 1/2 hours at the site, but I hope I get a chance to return.
