Owner description: Founded by Greek colonists, the ancient city of Poseidonia dates from 600 B.C. It was abandoned for centuries, but the remarkably well-preserved Greek temples were excavated in the mid-18th century.

We really enjoyed walking around this site. The temples were huge and beautiful. Fantastic day trip from Naples, well worth the drive. The restaurant we ate at close by the exit of the site is fantastic, some of the best food we have had in Italy. Side note: The guide book we purchased in the museum in English was not translated very well.

I have been to Athen for the Parthenon and other temples, and these definitely top them by far. Three large temples in great shape and easily accessible, along with fantastic ruins from the roman era. We arrived in mid December on a Friday. We caught the 12:52 train from Naples and arrived at 2:25. It is a ten minute walk down a narrow path to the ruins. Buy your combo ticket for the ruins and the museum at the museum office. Then go to the ruins first, because, even though it says they are open til 6:30, were entered at 3:00 pm and they closed the gates behind us. We had the ruins virtually to ourselves. Take about an hour in the ruins, then go to the museum...very good and informative with many artifacts. Don't miss this place.

the best preserved Greek temple in the world. the wooden parts are gone but the rock part are here. easy to reach after visiting Pompeii. The site is preserved by vegetation up to the 19° century. very beautiful temple.. all the town is here with place theater pools etc the temple are the best preserved. better than the temple in Greece ! !
It is beautiful park with only some tourist and photos for weeding.
There is a museum near.. No crowd so bear of pompei.
Take bus from Salerno main place.

So may great historical places are surrounded by modern clutter. Not Paestum. The temples are in excellent condition, and set like gems in a suitable surrounding. Uncrowded, quiet. Sit on a 6th Century BC pillar, and simply let history seep by osmosis into your soul.
Paestum is off the beaten track.......thank goodness. Richly worth a visit, the images, and the ambiance, will linger like a fine perfume.
