Do not make the same mistake we did and ignore the reviews that say this place can be hard to reach. Do not trust your GPS or Google maps, which will lead you through a difficult route on rough dirt roads over Mount Orello. But more on that later, because I would first like to say that our stay was pleasant and the hosts were congenial and helpful. I doubt there is a hotel or bed and breakfast on this island with a more spectacular view of the harbor below. We took a hike on the trail to Mount Orello and reached the top in 30 or 40 minutes. We enjoyed peaking inside some old army bunkers left over from World War 2, and we had views of the island in nearly all directions. The wild flowers were in full bloom, with butterflies all around.
I would like to give a 5-star review because the hosts were so kind and went out of their way to help us, but there were a few deficiencies that prevent this. The breakfast was nothing special—only the typical packaged croissants, bread and biscuits, along with yogurt, coffee, tea and juice. We were not offered cereal, cheese, eggs or fresh fruit. We spent the first night without heat, which wasn’t a big problem, since the blankets were adequate and we had stayed out late and went right to bed. The second evening, though, we spent in our room and had to keep our jackets on. We had asked for the heat to be turned on, and the proprietors obliged, but the thermostat must have been set so low that the heater never actually started up until late at night, after we had turned in.
We were the only guests, and we had our choice of the two rooms, so naturally we chose the one with a view. The other is in the back and has no view. Unfortunately, the view room is only a thin doorway separated from the hosts’ living room, so you can hear their TV and conversations, and vice-versa.
Returning to the problem of the directions, you will have no problems finding the best route if you program your GPS or Google Maps to find the hotel Relais delle Picchiaie, and then just go another mile farther and watch on the left for a sign. However, we didn’t know this and had to ask directions. This problem could have been better resolved if we had received directions in the confirming e-mail or if the B&B had its own web site with a map—or if we have paid more attention to other user reviews and written down the suggested directions. Do not come to this B&B by bicycle, as we did, unless you are ready for a two-kilometer climb up a steep and sometimes rough road. However, if you come when the weather is warm, have a car and pay attention about how to get here, you’ll have a great time.
