“Lovely views, friendly hotel”
Reviewed 6 August 2014

We stayed at the Hotel Paradiso in June, 2014 during our family trip to Italy. The hotel is exactly as promised on its website. The service is friendly, and the rooms are spotlessly clean and basic. We had three adjacent rooms, each with its own balcony. The view from the balconies and all around the hotel is, as my title suggests, gorgeous.

We had booked half board, so had breakfast and dinner at the hotel each day. Aldo, the restaurant manager, was a delight. He welcomed us nightly and shared his appreciation of Elba wines. The food at the restaurant mirrored the rooms: basic, but good, Italian home-style cooking.

The hotel is very close to a nice hiking trail that my husband and I did each night before dinner (about 1 hr return). We also enjoyed a complimentary kayaking excursion arranged by the hotel.
We enjoyed meeting the other tourists at the hotel. Most were families with children, and came from France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy. We were the only Canadians.
One request to the hotel management: Please add a Canadian flag to your collection!

Overall, we enjoyed our stay at Hotel Paradiso. It was a great base for our visit to Elba, and we would definitely stay there again.

When we, my boyfriend and I, booked a 8 night stay at hotel Paradiso, we based it on good reviews from Tripadvisor. That is why we think it's important to write about our recent stay.
Our expectations was this: A nice family driven hotel, with good service and good Italian food.
When we arrived, we we greeted by a wonderful female receptionist who had been very helpful before over email. She also made sure we got a nice room with great sea view, so she did a great job. We were also "greeted" by another receptionist who obviously didn't like his job. He took my briefcase and walked several feet ahed of us while he was giving us information about the hotel; breakfast time etc. When I asked what he said, he wad obviously annoyed, as he raised his voice. When we got to our room, and he left, we looked at each other and was very dissapointed with the first impression of hotel Paradiso.
We decided to put the incident behind us, and went to the wonderful beach. Yes, it is wonderful!
We wanted to eat dinner at the hotel the first night and was looking forward to our first Italian meal ever! We ordered veal and chicken. And vegetables on the side. It was quite expensive, so we had good hopes. Unfortunately, we god a very sad presentation with dry food on our plates. The vegetables on the side (4 euros) was canned corn and other very simple vegetables without any cooking involved! The wine of the house was also unfortunately not good. It seemed old and we could only bear to drink half a glass each. It costed 44 euros. Not money well spent.
The main waiter, an older gentleman, was not a very friendly person, so that combined - we decided to avoid to eat at the hotel. Instead, we went to Portoferraio and ate every night.
The pool-are is great! Amazing view, and not much chlorine in the water. But, on the Hotel Paradiso-site, you can see pictures of outdoor hot tubs/jacuzzis next to the pool. When we got there, there were covered with tarpaulins. It costed money to use it. Not much, but it is misleading to show off a great pool-are without information that it costs money to use it.
Also, wi fi costs money, and you have to get a code to use internet, which only works in a bar. If this had a better solution to it and staff and the food had been nicer, we would be happy with our stay at hotel Paradiso. No one ever asked us if we had had a good stay/if we needed anything. That's not acceptable when you stay in a hotel for 8 days. The hotel beach was amazing, though!

Room Tip: Ask for a nice room with sea view!

The management wish to thank you for taking time, so soon after your
holiday to comment on our family-run hotel. We believe a 'nice family

received can confirm this.
You also appreciated our efforts (via e.mail) to ensure a safe and quick train journey from your arrival aiport to Elba. Our apologies if a member of our staff didn't reach your expectations...he will try harder next time!
Thank you for your compliments: 'amazing' beach, swimming pool and 'nice room with

We have stayed at the family-run Paradiso many times in the past 20 years, usually in June or July, and have always had a wonderful time. The views are exceptional and ever-changing throughout the day and night. The staff are exceptional too - nothing appears too much trouble and they contribute much to the enjoyment and relaxation of your holiday.

There is a vast choice of tasty food at breakfast, including hard-boiled eggs (but don't expect a 'full English' ... this IS Italy after all!). One minor observation here - the juices could do with a little improvement! Snacks are available at lunchtime and there is a choice of dishes for dinner. The food is not 'gourmet' but always fresh and tasty and I would especially recommend the hearty local soups! Service in the restaurant cannot be faulted and there is a tempting choice of first-class local and other Italian wines. If you enjoy professionally-presented cocktails, the bar is the place for you ... watch out though, alcohol levels are generous! If you want a change, the restaurant in Viticcio hamlet - just 5 minutes walk away - is definitely worth a visit or there is the beach restaurant at Enfola - about 20 minutes walk - set under a fabulous fig tree with a superb menu, especially the fresh fish!

As a family, we have experienced six different bedrooms - all have been individual and very clean with good views and just a short distance from the great pool, restaurant and bar and typical of good-quality, three-star accommodation in Italy. The family work exceptionally hard during the closed season to re-decorate everywhere and add worthwhile improvements to enhance your stay.

The private beach is small and secluded and worth the haul up and down the steps, especially if you enjoy swimming and snorkelling in the turquoise waters of the bay. Best to take bottled water with you - you can always keep it cool in the sea! Those with mobility problems can stay cool by the pool and enjoy the same views.

We always have our own car or hire a car as there are so many wonderful places and beaches to visit in Elba. There is an energetic, up-and-down walk through the trees from Viticcio to lovely sandy beaches at Forno, Scaglieri and Biodola. Portoferraio, the capital, is just 10 mins drive away (there is also a bus service) for plenty of quality shops and lots to see and do. The beaches between Portoferraio and Viticcio are mainly of large white stones and also excellent for snorkelling. Porto Azzurro, Rio Marino, Capoliveri, Rio nell'Elba, Marciano, Poggio, Cavo and the beaches on the south-west coast are all worth visiting if you have transport. If you decide to take on the long climb up Monte Capanne (and it's worth it for the stunning views over the whole island, Pianosa, Corsica etc.) it's best to start at Marciano as early as possible in the morning; there is a cafe/bar at the top but take lots of bottled water. You can also take the cableway to the top from Marciano - one or two of you in an upturned 'parrot cage'!!

Whatever you do, it's bliss to return to the peace, quiet and friendliness of the Hotel Paradiso and those amazing views. The perfect solution for complete relaxation.

Room Tip: Most have fantastic sea/mountain views from a balcony or terrace ... and they're worth it! Howev...

We had a relaxing 3 nights here. Helpful, friendly staff. Pool overlooks the bay & beautiful view. Smallish private sand & stone beach. Gorgeous water! Rooms set up on terraces and different levels give the complex some charm. Not for people with mobility issues as there is some climbing. Most units seem to have balconies with chairs & table. Separate mattresses in double bed frame are firm to hard. Mini-fridge. A.C. Breakfast is plentiful and served in the restaurant. Your table is assigned for the duration of your stay and a 4 course dinner is also offered for 20 euro/person. This is convenient because one must drive into Portoferraio to find other restaurants and the hotel restaurant food is actually quite good. There is also a bar/terrace with lovely views that serves lunch fare. There are kayak excursions offered but one must book in advance. One word of caution; all your expenses are put on your room tab so it is easy to forget the amount keeps adding up. This is why one might be surprised when it is time to pay the bill. Paradise at a price.

When we first got to the hotel, we were slightly concerned about it being in a secluded location (we were booked-in for 8 nights), but this turned out not to be a problem.

We have rarely ever stayed at a hotel where the staff went so far out of their way to ensure that we had a good time. I am gluten-free, so every morning for breakfast, I had a hamper on our seats with gluten free bread, biscuits and cakes and they offered to make any pasta meals on their evening menu gluten free. As a side note they did say that sometimes at peak times this can be hard, but luckily we went on a relatively quiet week.

They made exceptional recommendations about places to eat (Pepe Nero in Portoferraio is a must - and go off the menu!) as well as a restaurant nearby with an amazing view. They also host free kayakking and trekking activities.

The room, whilst basic and a little noisy in the morning (we were next to the kitchen), is comfortable and filled our needs. We didn't have a sea-view room, but had a private terrace area which suited us perfectly. The view from the roof-top swimming pool/lounge area is second to none and we could easily have spent all our days there.

Our only issues - which was nothing really to do with the hotel - was that the price of a taxi between the hotel and the port is very expensive (20-25 Euros each way, although we were told by the owner that this was high). That said, the summer-time regular bus service that goes from outside the hotel to the port approx. every half an hour and costs 1.20 each way started a couple of days before we left. It doesn't run past 8.30pm but only having to pay the taxi cost one-way made it a lot easier.

We would definitely come back to Hotel Paradiso and felt that the fact that this was a careful, family-run hotel was very apparent.

Room Tip: A sea-view room is good but not essential as the view from the roof-deck is so good. If we were to g...

Was slightly shocked in the morning when I was told the price we had been quated the night before was per person and not per room as was clearly asked to the English owner. Then quite a patronizing conversation the next day from a very rude owner. Great view, average food, friendly resturant staff, basic rooms, patronizing owner and not great value regardless of the 'misunderstanding' over price!

The person who was 'slightly shocked' the morning of 03/06/2013 certainly wasn't the person who had arrived the previous evening with his European girl friend asking for a room - it was the 'rude owner' who, together with her family, has passionately and professionally, helped in managing the hotel for almost 50 years without one single accusation of being 'patronizing'. This guest stayed here for 1 night. On leaving the restaurant I asked him 'politely' if he had enjoyed his 4 course dinner - he replied 'very good'.
On his arrival the previous evening, after his request for a room, he was quoted a b/b price of Euro 51,00 per person daily (all our tariffs are clearly quoted, 'per person') ,I advised him (we are both Mancunians!) that our special halfboard tariff of Euro 65,00 per person was a much better solution . He opted for this. On our website our HB. tariff is Euro 75,00 per person daily. Whilst I apologise for the fact that didn't enjoy his stay at our lovely hotel ,I do feel his comments are very 'extreme' and unfair.

If you are looking for a friendly, relaxing hotel, with amazing views then look no further than Hotel Paradiso. The hotel is situated in Viticcio which is a very peaceful area, but as it is only about 10 minutes drive from Portoferraio where there are many shops, bars and the all important ferries to the mainland it is very conveniently situated. The hotel is nestled into the hillside and the rooms are surrounded by beautiful plants, flowers and trees. There are spectacular views across the sea to Elba's highest peak Monte Capanne from almost every area of the grounds and on clear days you can see the neighbouring island of Capraia and even as far as Corsica if the skies are clear, the sunsets we have seen have been beautiful. The hotel has a lovely pool that gets the sun almost all day in the height of summer and has panoramic views, it also has a tennis court and little beach that is lovely and secluded, there are a few steps to and from the beach but they are a good way to burn off some of the calories, especially if you are staying on the half-board option as we did. Breakfast and supper are ample and I can recommend the soups and the home made marmalade too! The thing that makes Hotel Paradiso really special are the staff, they are always extremely helpful and friendly and go out of their way to make you feel welcome and to make your stay a great experience.
