“Great sea views, comfortable, pretty town”
Reviewed 13 June 2011

Got in after a tiring walk through the Cinque Terre and had a lovely room, not vast but adequate, overlooking the bay and marina. Very comfortable bed and well appointed shower room. 5 minute walk to the very pretty town centre and quayside. Would definitely go back. Not sure on value as part of a walking tour.

The view from our window overlooking the Portovenere harbor and Ligurian Sea was breathtaking at night as well as in the daytime. The room was comfortable and had everything we needed. The location was perfect for getting a ferry to the Cinque Terre and the town is lovely as well. The service in the hotel was rather slow, especially at breakfast and the front desk was unmanned often.

Room Tip: Be sure you ask for large window facing harbor.

make sure you go slow because its very easy to miss and you will have to go all the way around whole town, its actually fun. hotel is in an outstanding location with a beautiful restaurant on a terrace with great views and surprisingly excellent food. very reasonable even with a couple of bottles of wine. rooms are very small even their big rooms with two floors. make sure you lose weight if you want to use the bathroom in the room. but the views from the rooms are movie like. the owners are around and they are a pleasure to deal with.

Stayed only 1 night would have liked to stay more but they were booked out. Great location, great views, good breakfast which was included in price, very helpful staff, helped with a wifi problem on my laptop over and above call of duty. Would stay here again.

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights from 4/10-4/12. The hotel wins you over because of the personal service it gives you. You know a hotel is good when I can remember the names of the people that worked there Luigi, Stefano, Desiree, Fabrizzio. This is a very nice hotel with an excellent view of the sea and marina. Portovenere is a small community and it takes by foot 3-5 minutes to walk to the "town" with all the shops and restaurants. We were there for our wedding on 4/11 at Castle Doria, with a reception dinner to follow at the hotels restaurant. In a word "excellent". Would go back with out a doubt when in Portovenere. Can not go wrong!

I have just returned from 2 nights at the Hotel Paradiso (room 245) and I can't really agree with all the previous reviews (which by the way were unfortunately why I chose to stay here - but you can't win
'em all.)

Location is more than fine. Just 5 minutes walk from the town and the
boats you need for Cinque Terre. The views from the terrace where we ate breakfast and dinner really were gorgeous. However, parking isn't
great, we were lucky to find a free parking place right outside the hotel on arrival so we left the car there for 2 days! didn't dare move it. Also take note that coming from La Spezia, the hotel is the first one you come across as you descend the hill into town - so stop
at the first neon sign saying Hotel! It doesn't say Paradiso but it is. We also had a nice view from our bedroom but the layout is such that you can't really enjoy it. ie. you open the shutters (they don't
lock back to the wall or anything, and you can sit on the bed directly infront of the shutters but it wouldn't be comfortable so we decided to leave after the second day to find a room with a proper
balcony or terrace.

The room had everything we needed, but a bit small. I came away with a couple of bruises because of lack of space. The bathroom had a nice
view from the window and only had a shower but it was very nice.

The most disappointing thing was the food. Considering you had no option but to take the half board option or sleep elsewhere I really would have expected better. I am not a big eater but really they hardly gave us anything. We never saw a salad leaf or potato which can be common in Italy but it was only a small plate of pasta to start, a piece of fish with maybe a tomato sauce on for primo and then a small dessert. There was no option to order more from a different menu.

On the first night I had a scampi pasta, in which you couldn't really
eat the scampi they were just there for flavour, a small bowl of mussels and a slice of parfait! I think for 220 eruos a night half board this is not good enough. The next night I had pesto lasagnetta (sp), some slices of roast beef on a small bed of mixed cabbage/
salad?, and some chocolate cake.

I realise that this is quite an expensive area in Italy but it would only have cost them a few euros extra to feed us more adequately.
Please don't take my comments to mean that this is a dreadful hotel -it isn't - it is nice - but it could be better. I just don't think it deserves the high reviews it has got - well not from our experience.

  • Liked — the views from the terrace
  • Disliked — disappointed it didn't live up to previous reviews
