After a harrowing drive along the Amalfi coast and into the town of Positano, arriving at the sunny, white washed lobby is like entering a peaceful cloud perched over the blue sea. It is really that beautiful.

The rooms are plush and elegantly decorated with rich fabrics, antiques and art. The large marble bathroom in our room was well appointed, and sitting on the balcony overlooking the cliff side town and gleaming water was even better with the provided Bose iPod docking station and tolling bells of the local church. The restaurant, lit only by candles, was extremely romantic and the service at all meals was immaculate. For one evening we wandered to the beach for dinner, which I would recommend doing to really get the vibe of Positano. One rainy morning we rented 'Only You' from their extensive video library - filmed in the hotel, it was fun to watch.

An expensive hotel - but a priceless experience, and well worth the extra if you can manage.

We spent 3 amazing days at Le Sirenuse and it was, in our opinion the best hotel we have ever stayed in.
Everything was just perfect, our room was amazing, spotlessly clean, comfortable bed, big, sparkling clean bathroom and a view that took my breath away every time I looked out our balcony.
We arranged to be picked up at the train station, our driver was waiting for us and very friendly. When we arrived, someone from the front desk staff took us to our room and explained everything. We were with another couple and we fortunate enough to get two rooms facing each other in our own little section, we also requested sea view rooms and they were perfect.
The hotel has such charm and history, each room is so tastefully decorated.
We especially enjoyed the location, within walking distance to so many restaurants and shops, we were happy to not have to contend with so many stairs that we have previously encountered the last time we stayed in the Amalfi Coast.
Breakfast is fantastic, everything is so fresh and the restaurant staff very accommodating
The pool again is spotlessly clean and the pool area is so relaxing.
We did not eat dinner at the restaurant as there were so many places we wanted to try in the area, but we did go to the champagne and oyster bar one evening and it was just lovely.
It is definitely a high end luxury hotel but a special experience we are looking forward to doing again. .

Loved this hotel. It is exquisitely decorated, has outstanding service, incredible views and fantastic food. It is the very definition of Italian luxury and I wanted to photograph every inch of the hotel so I wouldn't forget a detail. I stayed at many 5 star luxury hotels when in Italy and this was my favorite. While the hotel is expensive, there are few hotels in the world that outshine it in terms of style and charm. I wish I could live there!

My only complaint is that the restaurant Max that the concierge recommended to us and a bunch of other guests also staying there wasn't great, so skip it. There are much better places in Positano that are a fraction of the price and far better so I don't understand why they seem to tell everyone to go there.

Also - I loved the toilettres - they are definitely worth packing in the suitcase to take home! A little souvenir of the lovely Le Sirenuse.

The Amalfi Coast is amazing and definitely worth the trip … and despite some problems, we would probably stay at Sirenuse again.

Perhaps you want to hear the problems first:

- I saw in another tripadvisor post about smelly pipes with the bottom floor rooms. We were on the second to bottom floor and I thought we would be okay. When we returned in the evening of our second night, our room seemed like feces -- the smell was disgusting and strong. They explained that this is from outside pipes and out of their control; they promptly changed our room ... that's fine but why does a hotel of such a reputation even sell these rooms? ... or if they must, they should closely monitor the ‘smell situation’ of these rooms. So the lesson from all this is to make sure you get one of the higher rooms if you stay here. If we come again, perhaps we will just stay in a suite.

- The iPod speakers and some other minor items were not working … but this wasn’t a big problem.

Now the great part:

- This hotel is in a perfect location (stunning close-up view of Positano -- which I think is more special than the far-away San Pietro view) and close to all the 'action' and convenience -- the shops, cafes and beach. Positano is a great place to be 'stationed' when you are in the Amalfi Coast ... you simply go to Ravello, Capri, etc from here.

- Their 4/F drinks patio -- with its magical view, décor and music – is one of these special places in the world.

- The rooms are nicely decorated -- each a little different -- like a hotel of this calibre should be. I only wish the standard rooms were a bit larger; after all, we are already paying more than Eur1,000 a night.

- The staff and service is very professional.

Some other tidbits from our trip:

- You sometimes read mixed reviews of Capri but we absolutely loved Capri. Much more stunning an island when you see it in person ... with a balance of the tranquil (Anacapri) and trendy shops/restaurants (the main town). We rented a private boat so we didn't have to 'rough it' with the ferries and stayed well into the evening -- saw all the grottos (blue grotto; swam in the green grotto, etc), Anacapri, Capri plus dinner, all in one day.

- We were searching for an out-of-this-world Italian meal in Positano, like what one would find in Florence or Rome (although I understand that food is more Mediterranean here), but never found it. We went to "Max" -- sure, friendly service but many of the Italian restaurants in Hong Kong (where we live) are better than this, and I know that the best Italian is certainly not in Hong Kong. Our boat captain said that "Max is not Italian food" -- agreed! We also went to Donna Rosa ... high up in the Positano mountains, 20+ minutes drive away, but with no view ... better indeed but not fabulous.

- In Ravello, we had lunch at Palazzo Sasso's patio which was the best meal that we had in the Amalfi Coast (the food in Sirenuse is okay but not fabulous). Seems like they have excellent service, so I can understand why Conde Nast singles out this hotel. However, my friend stayed here just the other day and she found her room a bit small (for the price) and the Michelin-starred restaurant disappointing. Ravello is quiet and serene ... a contrast to Positano ... so it depends on what you are looking for.

- Last, rent a car if you can ... it's great to be able to drive around.

This is everything you expect from an Italian luxury hotel. The service is at very high international level, the restaurant perform small miracles at a very romantic setting. Make sure your room faces the bay of Positano, that way you have the ideal place for evening drinks on your balcony.

The stylish hotel boats are a great way to spend time on the sea; they are never overcrowded, but make sure to make reservation.

The nearby restaurants in the town of Positano may look dull but they are actually quite good.

I would love to come back to this hotel, but absolutely not with children.

After being wowed by Le Sirenuse back in 2004, we re-visited this dreamy place again in June. Despite the recession, we were only able to stay here for 3 nights when we wanted to stay a week (even the best places still sell out). Our room had the "typical" postcard seaside view of Positano and the bay along with spacious accomodations, including a very large jacuzzi. Service is superb as is the spa which remains a relatively unknown secret despite the rankings (T&L rated the spa #2 in Europe a couple of years ago). The breakfast buffett is unsurpassed in selection/quality. The restaurant remains superb and pricey (but how do you value near perfection?). Day trippers should really splurge for a spectular private boat ride to Le Scoglio which has been rated the best lunch in the world - and deservedly so. We can't wait to go back again to Le Sirenuse - if only they can accomodate our length of stay request.

Sireneuse is an excellent small luxury hotel, almost perfect -- in terms of the rooms, public facilities, the view, unique decor, pool and bar and casual food service and quality. For this it is equal to best hotels in Italy, Spain and US. However the high end restaurant was a complete disappointment -- overrated food in very small portions and really mediocre quality. Were it not 1030 PM and a special occasion I would have sent dishes back to the kitchen.

The concierge desk is very helpful. However, If you have not been to amalfi coast/campania before, do keep in mind it is more difficult than advertised to get around -- whether to Amalfi itself, to Capri, to Naples, Pompeii, Casserta You can choose between slow public transit, rental car driving which is very difficult unless you are really accustomed to narrow winding roads, or very expensive limo services.
